A concessive clause admits a circumstance and simultaneously denies that it changes the main conclusion: “even though X, still Y” or “even if X, still Y.” In Catalan, the difference between the indicative and the subjunctive is therefore not a mechanical tense choice. It tells the listener whether the speaker asserts the concession as a relevant fact, merely entertains it, or deliberately declines to argue about its truth.
English although and even if often make that distinction lexically. Catalan can place much of it in mood, especially after encara que and per més que.
The architecture of a concession
A concessive construction contains two propositions whose expected causal relation fails:
[Concession encara que el termini era molt curt], [main claim vam presentar l'informe a temps].
The first proposition normally suggests an expectation—short deadlines tend to cause delay. The main clause cancels that expectation. Neither clause is grammatically an argument of the other: the concessive is an adjunct with scope over the main claim.
Encara que el termini era molt curt, vam presentar l'informe a temps.
Even though the deadline was very short, we submitted the report on time.
Here era is indicative because the speaker presents the short deadline as established fact. The comma follows a fronted adjunct. In final position, a tightly integrated concession usually needs no comma:
Vam presentar l'informe a temps encara que el termini era molt curt.
We submitted the report on time even though the deadline was very short.
The truth conditions are similar, but information structure differs. Fronting turns the obstacle into the frame from which the result should be evaluated; final position reveals the obstacle after stating the result.
Encara que + indicative: conceding an asserted fact
Use the indicative when the speaker commits to the concessive proposition as factual, observed, or already accepted in the conversation.
Encara que la sala té bona acústica, des del fons no s'hi sent prou bé.
Although the room has good acoustics, you cannot hear well enough from the back.
La proposta no va prosperar, encara que tots els informes tècnics hi eren favorables.
The proposal did not pass, although all the technical reports supported it.
In the second example, hi represents the complement selected by ser favorable a: the reports were favorable to it. English has no comparable obligatory weak locative clitic and encourages learners to omit it. Catalan argument structure still requires the complement when it has been topicalized or recovered from context.
The indicative does not mean that the speaker considers the fact important. Quite the reverse: concession acknowledges it and then denies its expected force.
Encara que + subjunctive: entertaining or discounting a possibility
Use the subjunctive when the circumstance is prospective, hypothetical, unknown, repeated without commitment to a particular occurrence, or explicitly treated as irrelevant to the decision.
Encara que demà plogui a bots i barrals, la cursa no s'ajornarà.
Even if it pours tomorrow, the race will not be postponed.
Encara que l'argument sigui correcte, no resol la contradicció principal.
Even if the argument is correct, it does not resolve the main contradiction.
The second sentence need not assert that the argument is false. Sigui can suspend commitment: “grant it for the sake of discussion.” This rhetorical use is common in (formal) debate and (academic) prose. The speaker enters a possible world where the argument is correct and says the conclusion still fails there.
The subjunctive can also accompany a fact known to both speakers when the speaker deliberately backgrounds its truth and presents it as immaterial:
Encara que ja ho hagis pagat, podem reclamar si el cobrament era indegut.
Even though you have already paid it, we can file a complaint if the charge was improper.
Here payment may be fully known. The present perfect subjunctive does not erase that knowledge; it packages payment as a conceded circumstance rather than the speaker's argumentative focus. Mood encodes stance, not a simple fact/nonfact switch.
Paired structures: a change of mood, a change of commitment
| Construction | Speaker stance | Likely context |
|---|---|---|
| Encara que està cansada, vindrà. | asserts that she is tired | her tiredness is known |
| Encara que estigui cansada, vindrà. | leaves tiredness open or discounts it | possible future obstacle |
| Per més que insisteix, no l'escolten. | reports actual repeated insistence | observed pattern |
| Per més que insisteixi, no l'escoltaran. | ranges over any degree of possible insistence | prediction |
The first two sentences are both grammatical; they do not freely substitute for each other. By contrast, the following English-driven pairing is not a mood contrast:
❌ Encara que plourà demà, farem l'activitat al pati.
Incorrect in the intended hypothetical concession—the future indicative does not replace the required subjunctive.
✅ Encara que plogui demà, farem l'activitat al pati.
Even if it rains tomorrow, we will hold the activity in the courtyard.
The future belongs in the main prediction, while the nonasserted concessive uses present subjunctive.
Per més que: concession across a degree
Per més que means “however much/no matter how much” and explicitly quantifies an effort, property, or degree. With the indicative it can report an actual repeated pattern; with the subjunctive it ranges over every relevant possibility.
Per més que hi insisteixen, l'empresa no els dona cap resposta concreta.
However much they keep pressing the point, the company gives them no concrete answer.
Per més que hi insisteixin, no modificarem el protocol sense proves noves.
No matter how much they insist, we will not change the protocol without new evidence.
Per més acuradament que ho reviséssim, sempre hi trobàvem algun detall millorable.
However carefully we reviewed it, we always found some detail that could be improved.
The frame can contain més + adverb/adjective + que, as in per més acuradament que. It is still concessive, not an ordinary comparative standard. In the third example, imperfect subjunctive presents every attempted degree of care as insufficient; ho resumes the document and hi locates the recurring flaw within it.
Tot i, tot i que, and compressed concession
Tot i can introduce a noun phrase or infinitive. Add que before a finite clause.
Tot i la boira, els trens circulen amb normalitat.
Despite the fog, the trains are running normally.
Tot i haver revisat el contracte dues vegades, no havia detectat aquella clàusula.
Despite having reviewed the contract twice, I had not noticed that clause.
Tot i que coneixien els riscos, van decidir continuar l'assaig.
Although they knew the risks, they decided to continue the trial.
The compound infinitive haver revisat is possible because the understood reviewer is controlled by the main subject. If the concessive and main clauses have different subjects, use a finite clause: Tot i que l'advocada havia revisat el contracte, el client no havia entès la clàusula. Careful prose in both Catalan and English avoids dangling reduced clauses; in Catalan, the finite clause makes the changed subject and its agreement overt.
Tot i que most naturally introduces an accepted fact and therefore often takes the indicative. A subjunctive is possible when the content is hypothetical or deliberately unendorsed, but encara que is often clearer for that reading.
Scope and attachment
Consider this sentence:
Van mantenir el projecte del departament tot i que estava qüestionat.
They kept the department's project even though it was under challenge.
The omitted subject of estava qüestionat could grammatically recover either el projecte or el departament: both are masculine singular and both could be questioned. The final concessive thus has ambiguous attachment. Repeat the intended referent or recast the clause:
Van mantenir el projecte del departament tot i que el projecte estava qüestionat.
They kept the department's project even though the project was under challenge.
Tot i que el departament estava qüestionat, van mantenir-ne el projecte.
Although the department was under challenge, they kept its project.
In the second repair, fronting gives the concessive wide scope and en resumes del departament in mantenir-ne el projecte. Reordering is not cosmetic: it changes discourse packaging and makes the referential link explicit.
Topic, focus, and the apparent first “subject”
The neutral sentence keeps the object after the verb:
La comissió mantindrà la proposta encara que dos grups hi votin en contra.
The committee will keep the proposal even if two groups vote against it. (neutral order)
A contrastive topic can be added before the main clause:
Encara que dos grups hi votin en contra, la proposta, la mantindrà la comissió.
Even if two groups vote against it, the proposal—the committee will keep it. (marked topic order)
Neither encara que… nor la proposta is the subject of mantindrà. The first is a concessive frame; the second is a dislocated direct object resumed by la. The postverbal noun phrase la comissió supplies the subject. Treating every initial phrase as an English-style subject hides these distinct constructions.
Overusing the passive also obscures responsibility. La proposta serà mantinguda encara que… is grammatical (formal) but heavy; when the agent matters, active la comissió la mantindrà is clearer.
A natural dialogue
—Encara convocareu la reunió, tot i que la Clara és de baixa? —Sí; encara que no pugui connectar-s'hi, li enviarem l'acta.
—Are you still going to hold the meeting, even though Clara is on sick leave? —Yes; even if she cannot join it, we will send her the minutes.
—I si demana que l'ajornem? —Per més que ens sàpiga greu, avui hem de tancar el calendari.
—And if she asks us to postpone it? —However sorry we may be, we have to finalize the schedule today.
The first speaker asserts Clara's leave with indicative és. The reply uses subjunctive pugui because participation is a possible circumstance. Connectar-s'hi retains the locative complement “to the meeting,” and li marks the recipient of the minutes. The wider contrast is developed in choosing the indicative or subjunctive.
Regional and register guidance
The constructional contrast is common to the Catalan standards. (regional: Valencian) Standard forms such as siga, puga, tinga correspond to Central sigui, pugui, tingui; encara que siga correcte makes the same stance choice as encara que sigui correcte. (formal, IEC/AVL) Tot i, malgrat and encara que are all standard. Avoid assuming that a variant verbal ending changes the discourse value of the mood.
Common Mistakes
1. Using a future form in a hypothetical concessive.
❌ Encara que tindran poc temps, acceptaran l'encàrrec.
Incorrect for an open future obstacle—the concessive needs the present subjunctive.
✅ Encara que tinguin poc temps, acceptaran l'encàrrec.
Even if they have little time, they will accept the assignment.
2. Adding de after tot i.
❌ Tot i de conèixer la norma, la va incomplir.
Incorrect—the standard compressed construction is tot i + infinitive.
✅ Tot i conèixer la norma, la va incomplir.
Despite knowing the rule, he broke it.
3. Dropping a selected clitic.
❌ Encara que els informes eren favorables, el consell va rebutjar la mesura.
Incomplete for the intended meaning 'favorable to it'—ser favorable a requires the recovered complement hi.
✅ Encara que els informes hi eren favorables, el consell va rebutjar la mesura.
Although the reports supported it, the council rejected the measure.
4. Using an uncontrolled infinitive with a different understood subject.
❌ Tot i haver revisat l'advocada el text, el client no el va entendre.
Unnatural controlled prose—the reduced clause strains to introduce its own overt subject.
✅ Tot i que l'advocada havia revisat el text, el client no el va entendre.
Although the lawyer had reviewed the text, the client did not understand it.
5. Mistaking a concessive frame for the subject.
❌ Encara que hi hagi desacord són ajornades les votacions.
Poor information structure—the fronted clause is not a plural subject, and the agentless passive hides the decision-maker.
✅ Encara que hi hagi desacord, la mesa ajornarà les votacions.
Even if there is disagreement, the board will postpone the votes.
Correction task
The sentence Tot i haver baixat els ingressos, el consell mantindrà les ajudes wrongly suggests that the council itself “lowered the revenue.” Make the different subject explicit and preserve the factual concession:
Tot i que els ingressos han baixat, el consell mantindrà les ajudes.
Although revenue has fallen, the council will maintain the grants.
Indicative han baixat commits the writer to the fall in revenue. If it were only a contingency, Encara que els ingressos baixin… would instead suspend that commitment.
Key Takeaways
- Indicative after encara que asserts the obstacle; subjunctive entertains it or rhetorically discounts its truth.
- Per més que ranges over a degree and selects mood according to factual versus open interpretation.
- Use tot i with a noun or controlled infinitive, and tot i que with a finite clause.
- Fronted concessions frame the whole claim; final concessions often attach more locally.
- Resolve ambiguous null subjects and retain clitics required by Catalan argument structure.
- Word order signals topic and focus; an initial concessive phrase is not a grammatical subject.
