Abstract nouns let speakers treat an action, quality, state, or idea as a thing that can be discussed: decidir → decisió, feliç → felicitat, créixer → creixement. Catalan has many productive nominalizing suffixes, but there is no one-to-one conversion from an English suffix such as -tion or -ness. The wider inventory is presented under Catalan noun suffixes.
The derived noun also acquires its own gender and count behavior. La construcció can mean the activity of building, one construction project, or a finished structure; the surrounding article, number, complement, and context select the reading.
The main formation patterns
| Suffix or family | Typical source | Examples | Usual gender |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ció/-sió | verb | informació, decisió, traducció | feminine |
| -ment | verb | creixement, pagament, coneixement | masculine |
| -itat and related forms | adjective | possibilitat, legalitat, igualtat | feminine |
| -esa | adjective | tristesa, pobresa, tendresa | feminine |
| -ura | adjective or verb | obertura, amargura | feminine |
| -ança/-ença | verb | esperança, confiança, coneixença | feminine |
| -isme | noun or adjective | realisme, centralisme | masculine |
La traducció definitiva arribarà després de la revisió jurídica.
The final translation will arrive after the legal review.
El creixement ràpid del barri ha provocat diversos problemes de mobilitat.
The neighborhood's rapid growth has caused several mobility problems.
The suffix determines more than the end of the word. It creates a noun with gender: feminine la traducció definitiva but masculine el creixement ràpid. Articles and adjectives agree with that new noun, not with the source verb or with the English equivalent.
-ció/-sió: actions and their results
Many verb-based nouns in -ció or -sió denote an action, process, or outcome: organitzar → organització, traduir → traducció, decidir → decisió, revisar → revisió. All are feminine. The stem can change, and the choice between -ció and -sió is lexical rather than something English spelling can reliably predict.
La decisió del jurat va sorprendre totes les candidates finalistes.
The jury's decision surprised all the shortlisted candidates.
Han ajornat la construcció del pont perquè falta finançament.
They have postponed construction of the bridge because funding is lacking.
English construction resembles construcció, but resemblance is not a license to build every noun by replacing -tion with -ció. English “choice” may be tria or elecció; “development” may be desenvolupament; “growth” is creixement. Use word families, not a universal substitution formula.
-ment: processes, events, and results
Nouns in -ment are generally masculine and often derive from verbs: pagar → pagament, desenvolupar → desenvolupament, conèixer → coneixement, moure → moviment. They can denote the process, one event, or its result.
El pagament mensual es farà per transferència bancària.
The monthly payment will be made by bank transfer.
Aquests dos descobriments recents canviaran el tractament de la malaltia.
These two recent discoveries will change the treatment of the disease.
The second example shows full masculine plural agreement in aquests dos descobriments recents. English leaves “these two recent” largely uninflected; Catalan repeats number and, where the form permits, gender across the phrase.
Not every -ment noun remains abstract. Apartament names a concrete dwelling, and establiment can name a commercial establishment. Derivation gives a historical and semantic relationship, not a guarantee that the result is always intangible.
Quality nouns: -itat, -esa, -ura, and -or
Adjectives frequently form feminine quality nouns: possible → possibilitat, igual → igualtat, pobre → pobresa, tendre → tendresa, amarg → amargura. The operation may alter the stem, and competing nouns can divide meanings. Clar gives claredat for conceptual clarity and claror for light or brightness.
La claredat de les instruccions ha evitat molts malentesos.
The clarity of the instructions has prevented many misunderstandings.
Una claror blavosa entrava per la finestra abans de l'alba.
A bluish light was coming through the window before dawn.
Many productive quality nouns in -or are feminine—la claror, la blancor, la dolçor, la fredor—but the ending does not guarantee gender. Common abstract nouns such as l'amor, el dolor, and el valor are masculine. There is no shortcut that replaces learning the article.
Spanish can actively mislead. Catalan has masculine el dubte, against Spanish feminine la duda.
Aquest dubte persistent encara no ha quedat resolt.
This persistent doubt still has not been resolved.
The entire chain aquest dubte persistent resolt is masculine singular. The meaning is abstract, but agreement is as concrete and obligatory as with any other noun.
From a mass idea to countable events or results
Abstract nouns often have an unbounded reading for an activity or quality and a count reading for individual manifestations. Number is therefore meaningful, not merely formal.
La construcció del nou hospital durarà tres anys.
Construction of the new hospital will take three years. (the building process)
L'ajuntament enderrocarà tres construccions il·legals.
The city council will demolish three illegal structures. (three resulting buildings)
This minimal pair changes both countability and reference. The same noun first denotes an activity and then three concrete results. Similar shifts occur with decisió (the act or one decision), traducció (the process or a translated version), and pagament (paying or one payment).
Plural quality nouns can mean distinct instances or types: les alegries de la vida, dues grans dificultats, les belleses del paisatge. The plural does not simply mean “a lot of” the quality.
Les petites alegries quotidianes ens ajuden a suportar les dificultats inesperades.
Small everyday joys help us cope with unexpected difficulties.
Articles and modifiers reveal the intended reading
Generic abstract nouns commonly take the definite article in Catalan: La paciència és essencial; La llibertat comporta responsabilitats. English generally says bare “Patience” and “Freedom,” so direct transfer often drops a needed article.
La paciència és imprescindible quan treballes amb criatures petites.
Patience is essential when you work with small children.
A bare noun is nevertheless natural in certain prepositional and manner expressions: esperar amb paciència, actuar amb prudència, parlar amb sinceritat. Modification or identification can bring back a determiner: amb una paciència infinita; amb la prudència que el caracteritza.
Ens ho va explicar amb una paciència extraordinària i una precisió admirable.
She explained it to us with extraordinary patience and admirable precision.
Neutral descriptive adjectives normally follow the noun: una decisió difícil, una possibilitat real, un creixement sostingut. English places these adjectives before the noun, but Catalan preposing can add evaluation or discourse emphasis rather than merely reproduce English order.
False friends and derivational mismatches
English “success” is èxit. Catalan succés means an event or occurrence, often an incident; it is not the ordinary noun for achieving a desired result. The resemblance is one of the most misleading abstract-noun cognates.
L'obra va tenir molt d'èxit, però durant l'estrena hi va haver un succés inesperat.
The play was very successful, but an unexpected incident occurred during the premiere.
Likewise, English “actuality” usually does not correspond to actualitat, which means current relevance, the present state of affairs, or current events. Derivational families must be checked as lexical items.
Regional forms and formal style
The general standard uses bellesa, pobresa, and related -esa nouns. (Regional: Valencian; standard AVL) the variant -ea occurs in established forms such as bellea and pobrea. Choose the form natural to the regional standard you are using; do not treat a regional suffix as a random stylistic alternate inside one word family.
Abstract nominalizations are frequent in (formal), (academic), and administrative prose, but too many can make a sentence heavy. Vam revisar el projecte is often clearer than vam dur a terme la revisió del projecte. That is a style choice, not a claim that revisió is incorrect.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English zero article in a generic statement.
❌ Paciència és necessària en aquesta feina.
Incorrect in neutral Catalan — the generic abstract subject normally takes the definite article.
✅ La paciència és necessària en aquesta feina.
Patience is necessary in this job.
2. Guessing gender from Spanish.
❌ Encara tinc aquesta dubte raonable.
Incorrect — dubte is masculine in Catalan.
✅ Encara tinc aquest dubte raonable.
I still have this reasonable doubt.
3. Treating a false cognate as an equivalent.
❌ La campanya va ser un gran succés comercial.
Incorrect for the intended meaning — succés means event or incident, not success.
✅ La campanya va tenir un gran èxit comercial.
The campaign was a great commercial success.
4. Copying English adjective order mechanically.
❌ Van prendre una difícil decisió sense consultar-nos.
Unnatural here — difícil is an ordinary description, so neutral Catalan places it after the noun.
✅ Van prendre una decisió difícil sense consultar-nos.
They made a difficult decision without consulting us.
5. Mixing Central/general and Valencian determiners.
❌ Aquesta possibilitat i estes dificultats s'han d'avaluar juntes.
Inconsistent as one neutral paradigm — aquesta is Central/general and estes is Valencian.
✅ Aquesta possibilitat i aquestes dificultats s'han d'avaluar juntes.
This possibility and these difficulties must be assessed together. (Central baseline)
Key Takeaways
Suffixes such as -ció, -ment, -itat, and -esa create nouns with their own gender and lexical meaning. Abstract nouns can shift from unbounded processes or qualities to countable events, instances, and results. Let articles, number, complements, and modifiers express that shift, and never assume that an English or Spanish cognate predicts the Catalan noun's form, meaning, or gender.
