In a coordination, Catalan normally keeps the article that belongs with each noun, but it may let one article introduce more than one noun when the concepts are understood as a unit. The choice is meaningful. A shared article groups the nouns as a unit, paired category, or alternative; repeated articles more readily present independently identifiable referents and usually make scope clearer.
Article ellipsis is therefore not simply a way to save a word. In careful editing, ask whether the coordinated nouns share one referential frame and whether omission could obscure gender, number, modifiers, or the number of people involved. Review definite article forms if agreement or contractions are not yet automatic.
The central contrast
| Structure | Example | Likely interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| one article, related categories | les entrades i sortides | one paired system of arrivals and departures |
| repeated articles | les entrades i les sortides | two separately considered sets |
| one article, two roles | la directora i guionista | normally one woman with two roles |
| repeated articles, two roles | la directora i la guionista | normally two women |
| shared plural for an inclusive pair | els nens i nenes | one combined group |
The article in a shared structure agrees with the first noun it directly introduces. It does not become a special invariant coordination marker. Thus les mares i pares begins with feminine plural les because mares is first; els pares i mares begins with masculine plural els because pares is first.
One person with two roles versus two people
Article repetition can change how many referents the listener constructs. Compare the context-sensitive minimal pair:
La directora i guionista presentarà la pel·lícula.
The director and screenwriter—one woman—will present the film.
La directora i la guionista presentaran la pel·lícula.
The director and the screenwriter—two women—will present the film.
The singular verb presentarà reinforces the single-person reading of the shared article. The plural verb presentaran confirms two people in the repeated version. Without verbal agreement or context, la directora i guionista strongly favors one person but can still burden the reader; in (formal) prose, rewrite whenever identity matters legally or administratively.
The same contrast works in masculine phrases:
El poeta i traductor rebrà el premi aquesta tarda.
The poet and translator—one man—will receive the prize this afternoon.
El poeta i el traductor rebran premis diferents.
The poet and the translator will receive different prizes.
English permits similar ambiguity with “the poet and translator,” but its invariant article gives fewer agreement clues. Do not assume that deleting the second Catalan article is stylistically neutral.
Related categories can share an article
When two nouns form a conventional pair, one administrative field, a repeated category, or an alternative slot, a shared article is natural.
El curs tracta la producció i distribució de pòdcasts.
The course covers podcast production and distribution as one field.
Cal registrar les entrades i sortides de material.
Incoming and outgoing material movements must be recorded.
In these phrases, the modifier or complement applies naturally to the coordination as a whole: both production and distribution concern podcasts; both entries and exits concern material. Repeating the article remains grammatical but gives the members more independence.
Compare a context in which the same concepts are institutionally separate:
La producció i la distribució tenen pressupostos separats.
Production and distribution have separate budgets.
That sentence deliberately opens two noun phrases. The repeated articles support the plural predicate and the contrast between departments.
Repeat for clarity, contrast, or incompatible forms
Repeat the article when:
- the nouns denote clearly independent entities: les escoles i els hospitals;
- gender or number requires different forms: la directora i els tècnics;
- each noun has its own modifier: els contractes temporals i els convenis permanents;
- a contrast, correction, or distributive reading matters;
- formal precision is more important than compactness.
Les escoles i els hospitals del municipi tindran protocols diferents.
The municipality's schools and hospitals will have different protocols.
La directora nova i els coordinadors veterans revisaran el programa.
The new director and the experienced coordinators will review the program.
Here one shared article would be impossible: feminine singular la cannot introduce plural masculine coordinadors as though agreement were irrelevant. Catalan articles are not invariant English the.
When same-gender nouns have separate modifiers, repetition prevents the first modifier from appearing to scope over the whole sequence:
Han renovat les aules petites i les biblioteques antigues.
They renovated the small classrooms and the old libraries.
Without the second les, the sentence remains possible, but the grouping is denser and may require rereading.
Shared plural articles and mixed-gender groups
Inclusive pairs need carefully chosen nouns. The conventional pattern els nens i nenes uses masculine plural els before the first noun and coordinates a feminine plural second noun. The initial article is grammatically tied to the first conjunct while the whole phrase denotes a mixed group.
Els pares i mares interessats poden assistir a la reunió.
Interested fathers and mothers may attend the meeting.
The postposed adjective interessats has scope over the entire mixed group and takes masculine plural as the unmarked mixed-gender agreement in the traditional system. In inclusive institutional writing, repeating nouns and articles or recasting the phrase may improve symmetry: les mares i els pares que hi tinguin interès.
Do not generalize the shared plural pattern to incompatible singulars such as el pare i mare. Neutral prose uses el pare i la mare unless a genuinely lexicalized or highly constrained structure licenses a different analysis.
Prepositions and contractions follow the article choice
When the full prepositional phrase is repeated after a, de, or per, apply every required preposition-article contraction: dels professors i de les alumnes; al teatre i a la biblioteca; pels carrers i per les places.
L'informe parla de les escoles i dels centres sanitaris del barri.
The report discusses the neighborhood's schools and health centers.
A single preposition can also take scope over two coordinated definite phrases: de les escoles i els centres. That is grammatical, but repeating de produces clearer symmetry when the referents are independently contrasted. A more tightly shared structure is el reglament d'entrades i sortides. What is never possible is de els centres: if de appears again before els, it must contract to dels.
Gender must be Catalan, not copied from Spanish
Article ellipsis can conceal a gender error. Catalan has feminine l'anàlisi and la síntesi, whereas Spanish has masculine el análisis and feminine la síntesis.
L'anàlisi i la síntesi detallades ocupen capítols diferents.
The detailed analysis and synthesis occupy different chapters.
Both nouns are feminine, and plural detallades has scope over the coordination. If the adjective belongs only to síntesi, write or punctuate the phrase to make that scope explicit.
Formal editing choices
In headings, forms, and compact labels, bare coordination is common: noms i cognoms, drets i deures, entrades i sortides. That is distinct from sharing one visible article. In running (formal) prose, repeat articles when the reader must distinguish institutions, people, legal categories, or separately modified sets. Repetition is not clumsy if it prevents a substantive ambiguity.
Regional article forms do not change the semantic principle. (regional: Balearic; informal) salat articles and (regional: Northwestern; informal/local) lo/los may head coordinated phrases, but a Central-baseline formal text should use el/la/els/les consistently.
Common Mistakes
Omitting an article across incompatible gender and number
❌ La professora i alumnes han entrat a l'aula.
Incorrect in the intended definite reading — feminine singular «la» cannot serve as the article of plural «alumnes».
✅ La professora i els alumnes han entrat a l'aula.
The teacher and the students entered the classroom.
Repeating too little when two people must be distinguished
❌ El demandant i advocat signaran documents diferents.
Incorrect for two people — the shared article suggests one claimant-lawyer, while the plural verb conflicts.
✅ El demandant i l'advocat signaran documents diferents.
The claimant and the lawyer will sign different documents.
Making the shared article agree with the whole mixed group
❌ Els mares i pares interessats poden assistir a la reunió.
Incorrect — the shared article directly introduces feminine plural «mares» and must agree with it.
✅ Les mares i pares interessats poden assistir a la reunió.
Interested mothers and fathers may attend the meeting.
Forgetting the contraction in a repeated phrase
❌ Parlem dels horaris i de els preus nous.
Incorrect — «de + els» must contract to «dels».
✅ Parlem dels horaris i dels preus nous.
We're discussing the schedules and the new prices.
Guessing article gender from Spanish
❌ El anàlisi i la síntesi són complementaris.
Incorrect — «anàlisi» is feminine in Catalan and elides as «l'anàlisi».
✅ L'anàlisi i la síntesi són complementàries.
Analysis and synthesis are complementary.
Key Takeaways
- A shared article groups coordinated nouns as one role, field, pair, or combined category.
- Repeated articles create separately determined noun phrases and improve clarity.
- With two role nouns, one article often suggests one person; two articles normally suggest two people.
- Do not share an article across incompatible singular/plural forms, and repeat contractions when the prepositional phrases are separate.
- In formal editing, semantic clarity outranks the desire to avoid repetition.
