Coordination Syntax

Coordination joins units of equal syntactic status: two noun phrases, two verb phrases, or two clauses. At C1, the difficult question is not which conjunction means “and” or “or,” but exactly what is being coordinated and which material belongs to both conjuncts. Catalan permits elegant sharing and omission, but only when the missing material can be recovered in parallel from every conjunct.

The baseline here is contemporary Central Catalan. The structural principles are shared across the standard regional varieties; where a spoken pattern differs from careful prose, the register is stated explicitly.

Constituents, not strings of words

A coordinator normally joins constituents of the same kind. In the first sentence below, two verb phrases share the subject la Berta. In the second, two full clauses have distinct subjects.

La Berta va comparar les dues propostes i va redactar una resposta conjunta.

Berta compared the two proposals and drafted a joint response.

La Berta va comparar les dues propostes i l'Oriol va redactar la resposta final.

Berta compared the two proposals, and Oriol drafted the final response.

A useful analysis is [subject [verb phrase] and [verb phrase]] for the first: [La Berta [va comparar les dues propostes] i [va redactar una resposta conjunta]]. The subject scopes over both coordinated predicates. English allows the same economy, but English word order alone does not reveal the Catalan structure: agreement, clitics, and the argument requirements of each verb do.

Coordination is strongest when both conjuncts are parallel. Catalan can coordinate unlike categories only if they have the same function and the meaning makes the contrast intelligible, usually in marked prose.

La resposta ha estat ràpida i d'una precisió admirable.

The response was quick and admirably precise. (grammatical, stylistically marked: an adjective phrase and a prepositional phrase are both predicates)

❌ La resposta ha arribat ràpidament i d'una precisió admirable.

Ungrammatical coordination: an adverb modifying 'arrived' is not parallel to a predicative description of 'the response'.

✅ La resposta ha arribat ràpidament i ha estat d'una precisió admirable.

The response arrived quickly and was admirably precise.

💡
Before shortening a coordinated sentence, expand both conjuncts mentally. If the expanded clauses require the same function in the same place, sharing or ellipsis is likely possible. If the expansion gives a dependent two incompatible jobs, rewrite.

Sharing a dependent

Two coordinated verbs can share a following object when each verb independently selects that kind of object. In revisar i actualitzar el protocol, el protocol is understood as the object of both verbs.

Aquest matí hem revisat i actualitzat el protocol d'emergència.

This morning we reviewed and updated the emergency protocol.

La cap de projecte va convocar i després va escoltar tots els representants.

The project manager called in and then listened to all the representatives.

Sharing fails when the verbs demand different complements. Confiar requires en; felicitar takes a direct object. A single bare noun phrase cannot silently satisfy both patterns.

❌ La directora confia i felicita l'equip cada trimestre.

Incorrect in the intended meaning: 'confiar' needs 'en l'equip', whereas 'felicitar' takes 'l'equip' directly.

✅ La directora confia en l'equip i el felicita cada trimestre.

The director trusts the team and congratulates it every quarter.

The corrective clitic el is not decorative: it supplies the direct object required by felicita. Catalan generally resists the English habit of letting one final phrase serve verbs with mismatched government.

A weak pronoun can itself be shared when its form and interpretation work for both predicates.

La proposta, la podem debatre i votar demà al matí.

As for the proposal, we can debate and vote on it tomorrow morning.

Here la is a left-dislocated topic resumed by a direct-object clitic. Omitting it produces a different, nonstandard structure, because a detached object topic normally requires resumption. See topic and focus for the discourse contrast.

Extraction must apply across the board

Coordination strongly restricts extraction. A relative or interrogative dependency cannot normally reach into only one conjunct while leaving the other complete. It may, however, leave a matching gap in every conjunct: this is across-the-board extraction.

Aquest és l'informe que la Júlia va redactar i el consell va aprovar sense esmenes.

This is the report that Júlia drafted and the council approved without amendments.

Its relevant structure is l'informe que [la Júlia va redactar ] i [el consell va aprovar ]. The relative que is interpreted as the object of both verbs.

❌ Aquest és l'informe que la Júlia va redactar i el consell va aprovar el pressupost.

Ungrammatical under the intended reading: the extracted object leaves a gap only in the first conjunct.

✅ Aquest és l'informe que la Júlia va redactar i el consell va aprovar sense cap vot en contra.

This is the report that Júlia drafted and the council approved without any votes against it.

The bad sentence is not repaired by intuition about linear order. The dependency is structural: que cannot be the object of redactar while the second conjunct closes with its own unrelated object. The fuller discussion belongs to extraction.

Agreement with coordinated subjects

Two singular subjects joined by i normally trigger plural agreement. Person is resolved hierarchically: a group containing jo is first-person plural; without jo, a group containing tu is second-person plural in paradigms that use vosaltres.

Coordinated subjectStandard agreementExample
la metgessa i l'infermerthird-person pluralarribaran
tu i jofirst-person pluraldecidirem
tu i la Joanasecond-person pluralpresentareu

Tu i jo decidirem com ho expliquem a la resta de l'equip.

You and I will decide how we explain it to the rest of the team.

With postverbal subjects, proximity agreement with the nearest singular conjunct occurs in spontaneous speech (informal), particularly when the coordination is understood as a sequence. Careful Catalan favors transparent plural agreement when both noun phrases jointly form the subject.

Demà intervindran la degana i el secretari acadèmic.

Tomorrow the dean and the academic secretary will speak.

❌ Demà intervindrà la degana i el secretari acadèmic.

Avoid in careful prose if both people are the coordinated subject; singular agreement may initially suggest that only the dean will speak.

✅ Demà intervindran tant la degana com el secretari acadèmic.

Tomorrow both the dean and the academic secretary will speak.

With o, meaning matters. Exclusive alternatives often favor singular agreement; a nonexclusive set that may supply several participants favors plural.

La coordinadora o el seu adjunt signarà el document, però no tots dos.

The coordinator or her deputy will sign the document, but not both.

Ellipsis and punctuation

Catalan readily omits repeated material in the second conjunct. In gapping, a finite verb disappears but its contrasting dependents remain. A comma conventionally marks the missing verb in careful writing (formal).

La Núria presentarà els resultats dilluns i en Karim, les conclusions dimarts.

Núria will present the results on Monday and Karim the conclusions on Tuesday.

The analysis is [la Núria presentarà els resultats dilluns] i [en Karim Ø les conclusions dimarts]. The second conjunct is interpretable because presentarà is copied conceptually, not pronounced. Repeating the verb is always possible and may be clearer in speech.

The two halves must remain parallel. A clitic stranded without a verbal host, or an omitted verb whose sense changes radically between conjuncts, makes recovery fail. The ellipsis page develops those limits.

💡
A comma in gapping is a reading aid, not a license to omit anything. The silent verb must be recoverable with the same sense and the surviving phrases must contrast with matching phrases in the first conjunct.

Neutral order, topics, and focus

Compare a neutral clause sequence with a reordered version:

La comissió va aprovar l'informe i va ajornar el debat pressupostari.

The committee approved the report and postponed the budget debate. (neutral)

L'informe, la comissió el va aprovar; el debat pressupostari, en canvi, el va ajornar.

The report, the committee approved; the budget debate, by contrast, it postponed. (two contrastive topics)

The initial phrases in the second example are not subjects: la comissió remains the subject, and the accusative clitics el resume the fronted objects. The reordering builds a contrast between discourse topics. Simply copying English fronting and dropping the clitics is not standard Catalan.

Passive coordination is possible, but Catalan commonly prefers an active clause, a pronominal construction, or an impersonal third-person plural when the agent is unimportant. Two English passives should not be translated automatically as two Catalan passives.

Van revisar les dades i van publicar l'informe l'endemà.

They reviewed the data and published the report the next day. (natural agent-backgrounding)

Modifier attachment and ambiguity

Consider La directora va entrevistar els traductors i els correctors francesos. The adjective francesos certainly modifies els correctors, but it may be understood as applying to the whole coordinated group, especially in speech. Punctuation alone cannot reliably settle the intended scope.

La directora va entrevistar els traductors francesos i els correctors francesos.

The director interviewed the French translators and the French proofreaders. (both groups are French)

La directora va entrevistar els traductors i, a més, els correctors que venien de França.

The director interviewed the translators and also the proofreaders who came from France. (only the proofreaders are explicitly French)

Repeating the modifier may feel heavy, but it is better than making a legal, academic, or administrative sentence ambiguous.

A natural exchange

—Ja heu revisat i signat el conveni? —L'hem revisat, sí; signar-lo, el signarem demà, quan arribi l'assessora.

—Have you reviewed and signed the agreement yet? —We've reviewed it, yes; as for signing it, we'll sign it tomorrow, when the adviser arrives.

The first speaker shares el conveni across two participles. The reply refuses that shared assertion: one action is complete, while the second is placed in a contrastive topic construction with the clitic el. This is why coordination is more than punctuation—it commits the speaker to a structural relationship between propositions.

Common Mistakes

❌ A la Mireia, van felicitar i van confiar després de la reunió.

Incorrect — the two verbs govern the person differently, and the detached phrase is not properly resumed.

✅ La Mireia, la van felicitar i van confiar en ella després de la reunió.

As for Mireia, they congratulated her and trusted her after the meeting.

❌ El contracte, l'advocada va revisar i el client va signar-ne una còpia.

Incorrect as left dislocation — the first conjunct is missing the resumptive direct-object clitic 'el'; 'en' resumes the contract only inside 'a copy of it' in the second conjunct.

✅ El contracte, l'advocada el va revisar i el client en va signar una còpia.

As for the contract, the lawyer reviewed it and the client signed a copy of it.

❌ La directora i el secretari confirmarà l'horari aquesta tarda.

Incorrect — a subject coordinated with 'i' requires plural agreement.

✅ La directora i el secretari confirmaran l'horari aquesta tarda.

The director and the secretary will confirm the schedule this afternoon.

❌ Les factures, comptabilitat va comprovar i arxivar ahir.

Incorrect in standard Catalan — a left-dislocated direct object needs a resumptive clitic.

✅ Les factures, comptabilitat les va comprovar i arxivar ahir.

As for the invoices, accounting checked and filed them yesterday.

❌ En Pau prepararà el primer plat i les postres, la Sílvia.

Faulty gapping — the surviving elements do not align transparently with their counterparts.

✅ En Pau prepararà el primer plat i la Sílvia, les postres.

Pau will prepare the first course and Sílvia the dessert.

Key Takeaways

  • Coordinate constituents according to structure and function, not merely because two strings can be joined with i.
  • A shared dependent must satisfy every conjunct; otherwise repeat the complement or supply the required preposition or clitic.
  • Extraction from coordination is normally grammatical only when it leaves a corresponding gap in every conjunct.
  • Coordinated subjects usually take plural agreement, while o permits meaning-driven singular agreement for exclusive alternatives.
  • Ellipsis requires recoverable parallelism, and fronted object topics require the clitics that identify their grammatical role.
