Catalan -ment usually does the work of English -ly: clar “clear” becomes clarament “clearly.” The basic formation is regular, but three details matter: the suffix attaches to the feminine singular adjective, the spelling and accent of that feminine base remain visible, and Catalan coordinates several -ment adverbs differently from Spanish. Position also changes whether an adverb describes an action or comments on the whole statement.
Build from the feminine singular
For an adjective with distinct masculine and feminine forms, take the feminine singular and add -ment. For an adjective whose singular form does not vary in gender, add the suffix directly.
| Masculine adjective | Feminine base | Adverb |
|---|---|---|
| clar | clara | clarament |
| ràpid | ràpida | ràpidament |
| serè | serena | serenament |
| tranquil | tranquil·la | tranquil·lament |
| fàcil | fàcil | fàcilment |
| feliç | feliç | feliçment |
The feminine requirement is historical: Latin expressions meaning “with a ... mind” contained a feminine noun, mente, and the modifying adjective agreed with it. Modern speakers do not analyze -ment as a separate noun, but the old agreement survives inside the word.
La Laia va explicar el canvi clarament, sense donar-hi més voltes.
Laia explained the change clearly, without beating around the bush.
Si surts ara, arribaràs fàcilment abans de les vuit.
If you leave now, you'll easily arrive before eight.
Va tancar la porta tranquil·lament i va tornar a la taula.
She calmly closed the door and returned to the table.
Accent marks and spelling stay with the base
The adverb keeps the written accent required by the feminine adjective: ràpida → ràpidament, fàcil → fàcilment, contínua → contínuament. If forming the feminine removes an accent, the adverb follows the feminine: comú → comuna → comunament. The suffix does not license an invented accent such as claràment.
Other spelling features survive too. The middle dot remains in tranquil·lament, and feliç keeps its ç in feliçment. These are not decorative details: l·l represents a geminate written differently from the sequence ll.
El programa s'actualitza automàticament cada matinada.
The program updates automatically every night.
La ferida es va tancar gradualment, però encara li feia mal.
The wound closed gradually, but it still hurt.
Here is a useful contrast: continu has the feminine contínua, so the adverb is contínuament. The diaeresis in contínuament separates the vowels just as it does in contínua.
What the adverb modifies
Most -ment adverbs modify a verb and answer “how?” They normally sit after the verb or after its close complements, though fronting is possible when the manner is the topic.
La infermera li va parlar suaument perquè no es despertés de cop.
The nurse spoke softly to him so that he wouldn't wake up suddenly.
Lentament, el soroll del carrer va anar desapareixent.
Slowly, the noise from the street gradually faded away.
Some forms instead have sentence scope: they express the speaker's judgment about the entire proposition. A fronted sentence adverb is normally set off with a comma. Compare this minimal pair:
Francament, no crec que aquesta proposta resolgui el problema.
Frankly, I don't think this proposal solves the problem. — The speaker comments on the whole statement.
No ens va parlar francament quan li vam preguntar pels comptes.
He didn't speak frankly to us when we asked him about the accounts. — The adverb describes how he spoke.
Negation can therefore take different scope. No ho va explicar clarament normally means that the explanation was not clear; Clarament, no ho va explicar means that it is evident that the person did not explain it. English also uses position for this distinction, but Catalan punctuation makes the detached, sentence-level reading especially visible.
An adverb cannot repair a verb's missing complement. For example, parlar respectuosament amb algú still needs amb algú if the person addressed is expressed. Do not copy an English stranded preposition or a Spanish government pattern: learn the Catalan verb and its complement separately on the verb complements page.
Coordinating two or more -ment adverbs
Catalan offers three strategies. The safest neutral choice is to repeat -ment on every adverb. A paraphrase with de manera is often lighter. In a markedly formal style, Catalan may retain -ment on the first adverb and use a bare feminine form for the following coordinated items.
| Goal | Choose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral speech or writing | Repeat the suffix | ràpidament i discretament |
| Avoid a heavy sequence | Use de manera + adjectives | de manera ràpida i discreta |
| Marked formal style | Keep the suffix on the first item | ràpidament i discreta |
| Spanish-shaped reduction | Avoid | ❌ ràpida i discretament |
L'equip va reaccionar ràpidament i discretament davant la filtració.
The team reacted quickly and discreetly to the leak. — Neutral and recommended.
La portaveu va respondre de manera breu i precisa.
The spokesperson answered briefly and precisely. — A natural way to avoid repeating the suffix.
El reglament s'ha d'aplicar estrictament i uniforme.
The regulation must be applied strictly and uniformly. — Correct but markedly formal coordination.
The last pattern is the opposite of the traditional Spanish reduction rápida y discretamente. That Spanish-shaped order is a common transfer error in Catalan. Repeating both suffixes is never a beginner's mistake and is usually stylistically best.
A natural dialogue
—Com ho vols redactat? —Clarament i breument; el client ho ha d'entendre a la primera.
—How do you want it written? —Clearly and briefly; the client has to understand it the first time.
—I el pressupost? —Posa'l al final, ben visible, però presenta'l discretament.
—And the estimate? —Put it at the end, clearly visible, but present it discreetly.
Notice that clarament i breument repeats the suffix in ordinary professional speech. Discretament follows its verb because it describes the manner of presenting the estimate; moving it to the front with a comma would give it broader discourse prominence.
Short correction task
Correct these before reading the answer: Va contestar ràpida i educadament; Ho podràs fer facilment; Parlava tranquilement.
Va contestar ràpidament i educadament.
She answered quickly and politely. — Repeat -ment in neutral Catalan.
Ho podràs fer fàcilment.
You'll be able to do it easily. — Fàcil keeps its accent.
Parlava tranquil·lament.
He was speaking calmly. — Keep the middle dot and build from tranquil·la.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ho va resoldre ràpidment abans de dinar.
Incorrect — the suffix attaches to the feminine form ràpida, not directly to ràpid.
✅ Ho va resoldre ràpidament abans de dinar.
He solved it quickly before lunch.
❌ La Júlia ho va entendre facilment.
Incorrect — the accent in fàcil must remain in fàcilment.
✅ La Júlia ho va entendre fàcilment després de l'exemple.
Júlia understood it easily after the example.
❌ Van entrar silenciosa i prudentment a l'habitació.
Incorrect in standard Catalan — this last-suffix-only reduction copies Spanish.
✅ Van entrar silenciosament i prudentment a l'habitació.
They entered the room silently and cautiously.
❌ Va reaccionar tranquilament quan va sentir la notícia.
Incorrect — tranquil·la and tranquil·lament require the middle dot.
✅ Va reaccionar tranquil·lament quan va sentir la notícia.
She reacted calmly when she heard the news.
Key Takeaways
- Add -ment to the feminine singular: clara → clarament, ràpida → ràpidament.
- Preserve the feminine base's spelling: fàcilment, contínuament, tranquil·lament.
- Position and punctuation distinguish manner from sentence scope: francament can describe speaking or comment on a whole claim.
- In neutral coordination, repeat the suffix. The reduced formal Catalan pattern keeps -ment on the first item, never only on the last.
- A natural phrase such as de manera clara i precisa can be lighter than a long chain of derived adverbs.
