When several adverbials occur together, Catalan does not slot them mechanically into a single “manner–place–time” template. Their order reflects three interacting pressures: semantic scope (which comment applies to which proposition), information structure (what is already the topic and what is new), and weight (short constituents tend to stay nearer the verb than long ones). A grammatically possible order may therefore sound misleading or clumsy if it gives the wrong element prominence.
This page uses contemporary Central Catalan as its descriptive baseline, but the organizing principles are shared across the major standard varieties. Regional differences concern preferred vocabulary and rhythm more than a separate Valencian, Balearic, Northwestern, Northern, or Alguerese ordering grammar.
Start with meaning, not a memorized sequence
The following table gives reliable defaults. “Default” means an unmarked answer to a broad question such as Què va passar? (“What happened?”), not the only grammatical position.
| Adverbial function | Typical neutral zone | What moving it usually does | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| viewpoint or speaker stance | clause-initial, often detached | narrows or evaluates the whole claim | Des del punt de vista jurídic, probablement... |
| discourse-linked time or place | initial topic position | sets the scene for what follows | Demà, a Girona, ... |
| short frequency or degree adverb | near the finite verb or verb phrase | keeps a close semantic bond with the predicate | encara no ho sap ben bé |
| integrated manner | after the verb or its object | describes the performance of the event | va tancar la porta amb molta cura |
| new place or time information | later in the clause | receives end focus | ho presentarem dilluns a Brussel·les |
| long or internally complex phrase | final, or isolated initially | avoids interrupting the clause core | amb una precisió que ningú no esperava |
| focus expression | next to its focused constituent | changes which alternatives are included | només després de dinar |
This is a decision table, not a row of boxes through which every sentence must pass. First decide whether an adverbial comments on the whole clause or belongs inside the event. Then decide whether it is a topic or the new point of the sentence. Finally, put a very long phrase where the reader can process it without losing the verb and its arguments.
Wide scope normally comes before narrow scope
A viewpoint phrase establishes the perspective from which the entire proposition is valid. A sentence adverb then evaluates that proposition; narrower time, manner, and place phrases describe the event inside it.
Des del punt de vista tècnic, probablement demà podrem restaurar el servei del tot.
From a technical point of view, we'll probably be able to restore the service completely tomorrow.
The natural layering is viewpoint > probability > time > event completion. Moving des del punt de vista tècnic to the end is possible, but makes it sound like a late qualification rather than the frame announced from the outset.
Francament, a hores d'ara encara no entenc prou bé per què van ajornar la votació.
Frankly, at this point I still don't understand well enough why they postponed the vote.
Here francament comments on the speaker's act of saying; a hores d'ara locates the assessment in time; encara and prou bé modify the state of understanding. Nothing may be inferred from English adverb order alone: translating “I still frankly don't quite understand” word for word would obscure these scope layers.
Punctuation helps. A detached viewpoint or stance expression normally takes a comma when initial; an integrated manner phrase does not.
Sincerament, la directora va respondre amb una calma admirable davant de tota la plantilla.
Honestly, the director responded with admirable calm in front of the whole staff.
La directora va respondre sincerament a la pregunta més delicada davant de tota la plantilla.
The director answered the most delicate question honestly in front of the whole staff.
The first sincerament evaluates the speech act (“to be honest”); the second describes how she answered. This minimal pair shows why commas and position are grammatical cues, not ornamental preferences.
Topics go early; new information gravitates rightward
Catalan readily places a time or place frame before the clause when it connects to the preceding discourse. That initial element acts as a topic: “as for that time/place, here is what happened.” New, contrastive information often occupies the end.
Dilluns al matí, al laboratori, vam revisar les mostres amb molta cura.
On Monday morning, in the laboratory, we examined the samples very carefully.
This is natural if Monday morning and the laboratory establish the narrative scene. If the question is On vau revisar les mostres? (“Where did you examine the samples?”), final place is more informative:
Dilluns al matí vam revisar les mostres amb molta cura al laboratori nou.
On Monday morning we examined the samples very carefully in the new laboratory.
The two orders do not contradict each other. They answer different implicit questions. A rigid English-derived sequence cannot explain that difference; information structure can. See topic and focus for the larger system.
Initial adverbials may stack, but too many scene setters delay the subject and verb. In edited prose, group closely related frames and move the heaviest one to the end or into a separate sentence.
A Barcelona, durant els mesos d'estiu, segons les dades que ha publicat avui l'Ajuntament, l'ús nocturn del transport públic augmenta considerablement.
In Barcelona, during the summer months, according to data published by the City Council today, nighttime use of public transport increases considerably.
The sentence is grammatical, but dense. (academic) and (administrative) prose tolerates this kind of framing more readily than conversation. A clearer revision is Segons les dades que l'Ajuntament ha publicat avui, l'ús nocturn del transport públic augmenta considerablement a Barcelona durant els mesos d'estiu. The source phrase receives initial authority; place and time remain inside the proposition.
Manner, place, and time are flexible—but not arbitrary
In a broad-focus description, Catalan often places the object before optional manner and setting phrases. Among final adjuncts, a short manner phrase commonly precedes a place or time phrase, especially when time supplies the final new anchor.
L'equip va explicar els resultats amb claredat a la sala gran ahir al vespre.
The team explained the results clearly in the large hall yesterday evening.
That order is a usable neutral baseline: event core + manner + place + time. Yet Ahir al vespre, l'equip va explicar... is better when the time resumes a timeline, and A la sala gran, l'equip... is better when contrasting rooms. The “template” yields to discourse.
Place and direction phrases can also be selected complements rather than loose adjuncts. In Va posar les claus damunt la taula amb molta cura, damunt la taula completes the meaning of posar and naturally stays near the verb; the optional manner phrase follows.
Va deixar discretament el sobre a recepció abans que arribessin els convidats.
She discreetly left the envelope at reception before the guests arrived.
Va deixar el sobre a recepció, discretament, abans que arribessin els convidats.
She left the envelope at reception—discreetly—before the guests arrived.
In the first, discretament is integrated into the event. In the second, commas turn it into a parenthetical comment. The subordinate time clause keeps the subjunctive arribessin because it refers prospectively from a past reference point; moving adverbials does not determine mood.
Focus adverbs must stay close to what they select
Words such as només, també, fins i tot, and precisament can make different readings out of the same lexical material. Their safest position is next to the focused constituent.
La comissió només publicarà l'informe complet divendres.
The committee will only publish the full report on Friday. — The action is limited to publishing; context may leave further ambiguity.
La comissió publicarà només l'informe complet divendres.
The committee will publish only the full report on Friday. — Other documents are excluded.
La comissió publicarà l'informe complet només divendres.
The committee will publish the full report only on Friday. — Other days are excluded.
These minimal pairs show scope directly. English also moves “only,” but conversational English often leaves it early and relies on stress. Careful Catalan writing benefits from explicit adjacency. The focus adverbs page develops this system.
Negation adds another scope layer. Probablement no hi treballarà demà makes non-working probable. No hi treballarà, probablement, demà presents the negative claim first and then softens it parenthetically. Neither order licenses putting an adverb inside the clitic–verb group.
Weight and the right edge
Long phrases are easier to process at the end. This “end-weight” principle is especially strong when an adverbial contains a relative clause, comparison, or its own subordinate proposition.
La portaveu va defensar la decisió ahir amb una fermesa que va sorprendre fins i tot els membres més veterans del consell.
The spokesperson defended the decision yesterday with a firmness that surprised even the most senior members of the council.
Putting the long manner phrase between va defensar and la decisió would separate the verb from its object. Conversely, a long adverbial can be fronted deliberately if it is the contrastive frame:
Amb una prudència que els seus rivals van confondre amb indecisió, el negociador va anar acostant les dues parts a un acord.
With a caution that his rivals mistook for indecision, the negotiator gradually brought the two sides toward an agreement.
This sentence contains a reordered constituent with an embedded relative clause. The comma closes the heavy initial frame and lets the reader locate the main clause immediately.
Natural dialogue: order follows the question under discussion
—Quan presentareu finalment el projecte? —Probablement dilluns, a primera hora, a la seu del districte. —I com ho fareu? —Davant de la premsa, la Laia n'explicarà primer els objectius molt breument i, després, jo en comentaré les xifres amb més detall. —Només les d'aquest trimestre? —No; les compararem també amb les de l'any passat.
When will you finally present the project? —Probably on Monday, first thing, at the district headquarters. —And how will you do it? —In front of the press, Laia will first explain its aims very briefly and then I'll discuss the figures in more detail. —Only this quarter's? —No; we'll also compare them with last year's.
The answer to quan begins with time; the answer to com reorganizes the clause around sequence and manner. Només and també sit beside contrasting data sets. No universal surface order would serve all those conversational purposes.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying an English template even when Catalan topic structure calls for another order.
⚠️ Vam parlar tranquil·lament al despatx sobre el pressupost ahir.
Grammatical but poorly organized for the intended neutral reading: the topic sobre el pressupost is delayed after the place phrase, and time arrives as an unintended afterthought.
✅ Ahir vam parlar tranquil·lament del pressupost al despatx.
Yesterday we talked calmly about the budget in the office.
The verb is parlar de, not Spanish-influenced parlar sobre as the only assumed government; sobre is possible with the sense “on the topic of,” but de is the ordinary selected preposition here.
2. Splitting clitics from their verb.
❌ Els demà enviarem definitivament a Tarragona.
Incorrect—demà cannot be inserted between the weak pronoun els and enviarem.
✅ Demà els enviarem definitivament a Tarragona.
Tomorrow we'll finally send them to Tarragona.
3. Misplacing a focus adverb and changing the excluded alternatives.
❌ Només la Mireia revisarà els annexos.
Wrong for the intended meaning 'Mireia will review only the annexes': this says only Mireia will do the reviewing.
✅ La Mireia revisarà només els annexos; l'informe principal ja està aprovat.
Mireia will review only the appendices; the main report has already been approved.
4. Stranding a Catalan preposition as English does.
❌ Aquest és el despatx que hi treballarem demà.
Incorrect—English can leave 'in' at the end, but Catalan must express the relation and normally uses on or a preposition plus a relative.
✅ Aquest és el despatx on treballarem demà amb l'equip de Girona.
This is the office where we'll work tomorrow with the Girona team.
Short correction task
Revise Els ara ho explicarem només als nous membres amb calma so that the clitic cluster stays intact and the intended focus is clear: Ara els ho explicarem amb calma només als membres nous (“now we will explain it calmly only to the new members”). Then produce the reading “we will only explain it, not put it into practice”: Ara només els ho explicarem amb calma als membres nous. The shift of només changes scope, not merely style.
Key Takeaways
Catalan adverbial order is structured but flexible. Put wide-scope viewpoint and stance expressions outside or near the beginning of the proposition; keep integrated short modifiers near the predicate; use initial position for a discourse topic and final position for new or heavy material. Preserve the clitic–verb unit, keep focus adverbs next to their target, and use commas to distinguish detached comments from manner inside the event. When two orders are grammatical, ask what question each one answers.
