Light أنْ introduces a finite verbal complement and governs its imperfect subjunctive: أريد أن أراجعَ العقد “I want to review the contract.” English normally uses an infinitive after want, but Arabic retains a verb that can mark person, gender, number, and voice.
The embedded subject may be the same as the main-clause subject or different from it. This is the central organizing question: first decide who performs the action after أنْ, then inflect the subjunctive for that participant.
For the ending contrast that separates this mood from the jussive imperfect, remember that final-weak subjunctives normally retain their weak letter, while jussives delete it.
Light أنْ creates a subjunctive clause
أنْ is a complementizer and mood governor, not a lexical verb; it has no root or derived Form. With regular Form I كَتَبَ — يَكْتُبُ — كِتَابَةً “write,” root ك-ت-ب, the local contrast is:
| Environment | Form | Analysis |
|---|---|---|
| main assertion | يَكْتُبُ | indicative -u |
| after light أنْ | أَنْ يَكْتُبَ | subjunctive -a |
| dual after أنْ | أَنْ يَكْتُبَا | mood nūn deleted |
| masculine plural after أنْ | أَنْ يَكْتُبُوا | mood nūn deleted |
| feminine plural after أنْ | أَنْ يَكْتُبْنَ | agreement nūn remains |
أريد أن أراجع العقد قبل اجتماع الغد.
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾurājiʿa l-ʿaqda qabla jtimāʿi l-ghad.
I want to review the contract before tomorrow's meeting.
قررت ندى أن تكتب الملخص بعد انتهاء المقابلة.
qarrarat nadā ʾan taktuba l-mulakhkhaṣa baʿda ntihāʾi l-muqābala(h).
Nada decided to write the summary after the interview.
The verbs after أنْ are not tenseless infinitives. First-person أراجعَ and feminine-singular تكتبَ have understood subjects recovered from the main clause.
Same-subject complements have a control-like reading
After verbs of wanting, deciding, trying, intending, and being able, an omitted embedded subject is commonly understood as the main subject.
يحاول سامر أن يتجنب الطريق المزدحم في الصباح.
yuḥāwilu sāmirun ʾan yatajannaba ṭ-ṭarīqa l-muzdaḥima fī ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
Samer tries to avoid the congested road in the morning.
الباحثتان قررتا أن تعيدا التجربة بعينة أكبر.
al-bāḥithatāni qarraratā ʾan tuʿīdā t-tajribata bi-ʿayyinatin ʾakbar.
The two female researchers decided to repeat the experiment with a larger sample.
Dual تعيدانِ loses its mood nūn after أنْ, giving تعيدا. Both the main perfect and the embedded imperfect agree with the fronted feminine-dual subject.
This same-subject interpretation is strong with قرر أن “decided to” and حاول أن “tried to,” but it is not a magical property of أنْ. The complementizer itself does not identify the participant; lexical meaning and discourse do.
Different-subject complements remain finite
The complement can have an explicit or contextually understood subject different from the main subject.
طلبت المديرة من المحامي أن يراجع البند الأخير.
ṭalabati l-mudīratu mina l-muḥāmī ʾan yurājiʿa l-banda l-ʾakhīr.
The director asked the lawyer to review the final clause.
The phrase من المحامي identifies the requested actor, and masculine-singular يراجعَ confirms that reading.
تريد الإدارة أن يراجع الخبراء إجراءات السلامة.
turīdu l-ʾidāratu ʾan yurājiʿa l-khubarāʾu ʾijrāʾāti s-salāma(h).
Management wants the experts to review the safety procedures.
Because يراجعَ precedes the overt human plural الخبراء, it is singular in neutral VSO. Subject-first order inside a light-أنْ complement instead uses full agreement: تريد الإدارة من الخبراء أن يراجعوا الإجراءات.
طلبت الإدارة من الموظفات أن يرسلن صور الهويات قبل الخميس.
ṭalabati l-ʾidāratu mina l-muwaẓẓafāti ʾan yursilna ṣuwara l-huwiyyāti qabla l-khamīs.
Management asked the female employees to send copies of their ID cards before Thursday.
Feminine-plural يرسلنَ retains nūn because that nūn marks the subject, not mood.
Do not confuse أنْ with أنَّ
Light أَنْ directly governs a following imperfect subjunctive. Heavy أَنَّ introduces a nominal content clause, puts its own noun in the accusative, and does not itself make the later predicate verb subjunctive.
أتوقع أن يصل الفريق قبل الظهر.
ʾatawaqqaʿu ʾan yaṣila l-farīqu qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
I expect the team to arrive before noon. (Light أنْ + subjunctive.)
أعرف أن الفريق يصل عادة قبل الظهر.
ʾaʿrifu ʾanna l-farīqa yaṣilu ʿādatan qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
I know that the team usually arrives before noon. (Heavy أنَّ + indicative predicate.)
English that versus to can provide a useful first clue, but it is not a complete rule. Arabic chooses between a verbal complement headed by أنْ and a nominal content clause headed by أنَّ.
Verbal nouns offer a compact alternative
Because أنْ + verb behaves like a clause with nominal distribution, it can often alternate with a maṣdar. The two are not identical in every context.
قرر الفريق تأجيل الاجتماع إلى يوم الثلاثاء.
qarrara l-farīqu taʾjīla l-ijtimāʿi ʾilā yawmi th-thulāthāʾ.
The team decided to postpone the meeting until Tuesday. (Compact verbal noun.)
قرر الفريق أن يؤجل الاجتماع إلى يوم الثلاثاء.
qarrara l-farīqu ʾan yuʾajjila l-ijtimāʿa ʾilā yawmi th-thulāthāʾ.
The team decided to postpone the meeting until Tuesday. (Finite complement.)
The maṣdar تأجيل is compact and common (formal), but it leaves person and tense less explicit. The finite clause can display its subject, voice, agreement, and internal negation.
نرغب في أن تشارك ليلى في الجلسة الختامية.
narghabu fī ʾan tushārika laylā fī l-jalsati l-khitāmiyya(h).
We would like Layla to participate in the closing session.
Here the different subject makes a finite clause clearer than an agentless في المشاركة. Conversely, same-subject نرغب في المشاركة “we wish to participate” is concise and natural.
Weak and geminate complements
Final-wāw دَعَا — يَدْعُو — دُعَاءً, root د-ع-و, retains و and shows subjunctive -a: أن يدعوَ. Final-yāʾ رَمَى — يَرْمِي — رَمْيًا, root ر-م-ي, similarly gives أن يرميَ. These are subjunctive, not jussive.
تريد اللجنة أن تدعو خبيرا مستقلا لتقييم الخطة.
turīdu l-lajnatu ʾan tadʿuwa khabīran mustaqillan li-taqyīmi l-khuṭṭa(h).
The committee wants to invite an independent expert to evaluate the plan.
طلب المدرب من اللاعبة أن ترمي الكرة نحو الزاوية البعيدة.
ṭalaba l-mudarribu mina l-lāʿibati ʾan tarmiya l-kurata naḥwa z-zāwiyati l-baʿīda(h).
The coach asked the female player to throw the ball toward the far corner.
Geminate رَدَّ — يَرُدُّ — رَدًّا, root ر-د-د, has contracted subjunctive يردَّ.
من الأفضل أن يرد المتحدث على الاعتراض مباشرة.
mina l-ʾafḍali ʾan yarudda l-mutaḥaddithu ʿalā l-iʿtirāḍi mubāshara(h).
It would be better for the spokesperson to respond to the objection directly.
Common Mistakes
Keeping the indicative ending after light أنْ
❌ أريد أن أراجع العقد اليوم.
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾurājiʿu l-ʿaqda l-yawm
Incorrect formal reading — light أنْ governs subjunctive ʾurājiʿa.
✅ أريد أن أراجع العقد مع المحامي اليوم.
ʾurīdu ʾan ʾurājiʿa l-ʿaqda maʿa l-muḥāmī l-yawm.
I want to review the contract with the lawyer today.
Using heavy أنَّ before a bare subjunctive
❌ قررت ندى أن تكتب الملخص.
qarrarat nadā ʾanna taktuba l-mulakhkhaṣ
Incorrect reading — heavy أنَّ cannot stand directly before this bare verbal complement; use light أنْ.
✅ قررت ندى أن تكتب الملخص بعد المقابلة.
qarrarat nadā ʾan taktuba l-mulakhkhaṣa baʿda l-muqābala(h).
Nada decided to write the summary after the interview.
Making the complement agree with the wrong subject
❌ طلبت المديرة من الموظفين أن تراجعوا الخطة.
Incorrect — الموظفين identifies a masculine-plural embedded subject, so use يراجعوا.
✅ طلبت المديرة من الموظفين أن يراجعوا الخطة قبل الاجتماع.
ṭalabati l-mudīratu mina l-muwaẓẓafīna ʾan yurājiʿū l-khuṭṭata qabla l-ijtimāʿ.
The director asked the employees to review the plan before the meeting.
Giving a verb-first form full plural agreement
❌ تريد الإدارة أن يراجعوا الخبراء الإجراءات.
Incorrect as neutral verb-first order — before the overt human plural subject, use singular يراجعَ.
✅ تريد الإدارة أن يراجع الخبراء الإجراءات الجديدة.
turīdu l-ʾidāratu ʾan yurājiʿa l-khubarāʾu l-ʾijrāʾāti l-jadīda(h).
Management wants the experts to review the new procedures.
Deleting a final weak letter as if the verb were jussive
❌ تريد اللجنة أن تدع خبيرا آخر.
Incorrect — subjunctive يدعوَ retains و; weak-letter deletion marks the jussive.
✅ تريد اللجنة أن تدعو خبيرا آخر لمراجعة النتائج.
turīdu l-lajnatu ʾan tadʿuwa khabīran ʾākhara li-murājaʿati n-natāʾij.
The committee wants to invite another expert to review the results.
Key Takeaways
- Light أنْ governs a finite subjunctive imperfect; it is not heavy أنَّ.
- The embedded subject can be controlled by the main subject or independently expressed.
- Sound forms show -a, five-verb forms delete mood nūn, and feminine-plural nūn remains.
- A maṣdar is a compact formal alternative, but a finite clause expresses subject, agreement, voice, and negation more clearly.
- Final-weak subjunctives retain their weak letter, and geminate verbs keep their verified contracted stem.
