Formal Arabic can introduce a purpose clause with كي, لكي, or attached لِـ: راجعنا الأرقام كي نتجنبَ الخطأ “We reviewed the figures so that we could avoid the error.” All three constructions place the following imperfect in the subjunctive and answer “for what intended result?”
The forms overlap substantially in contemporary MSA. كي and لكي make the purpose link explicit; attached لِـ is especially compact in instructions, planning, and explanatory prose. Do not invent a rigid difference in intention or formality where context shows none.
The neighboring حتى + subjunctive can also express purpose, but it often adds an endpoint meaning that these three markers do not require.
Three purpose markers, one subjunctive outcome
Purpose particles are governors, not lexical verbs, so they have no roots or derived Forms. Traditional analyses differ over whether كي governs directly and whether an unspoken أنْ follows purpose لِـ. For a learner, the observable result is stable: the imperfect is subjunctive.
| Marker | Spelling | Example form | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| كَيْ | separate from the verb | كَيْ يَفْهَمَ | neutral formal |
| لِكَيْ | one word لكي; verb separate | لِكَيْ يَفْهَمَ | neutral formal, explicit |
| لِـ | attached directly to the verb | لِيَفْهَمَ | concise formal |
راجعنا التعليمات كي نتجنب الأخطاء أثناء التثبيت.
rājaʿnā t-taʿlīmāti kay natajannaba l-ʾakhṭāʾa ʾathnāʾa t-tathbīt.
We reviewed the instructions so that we could avoid errors during installation.
أعادت الشركة جدولة المواعيد لكي تقلل وقت الانتظار.
ʾaʿādati sh-sharikatu jadwalata l-mawāʿīdi li-kay tuqallila waqta l-intiẓār.
The company rescheduled the appointments in order to reduce waiting time.
افتح الملف المرفق لتقرأ التفاصيل كاملة.
ʾiftaḥi l-milaffa l-murfaqa li-taqraʾa t-tafāṣīla kāmila(h).
Open the attached file to read the full details. (To one man.)
In the third example, attached لِـ plus تقرأَ is one orthographic word: لتقرأ. A space between the lām and the verb is incorrect.
The purpose subject may stay the same
When one participant performs both actions, Arabic normally leaves the purpose subject unexpressed but marks it on the finite verb.
وصلت مريم مبكرا لكي تتحدث مع الطبيب قبل الموعد.
waṣalat maryamu mubakkiran li-kay tataḥaddatha maʿa ṭ-ṭabībi qabla l-mawʿid.
Maryam arrived early so that she could speak with the doctor before the appointment.
الباحثتان قسمتا العمل لتنجزا التحليل قبل الجمعة.
al-bāḥithatāni qassamatā l-ʿamala li-tunjizā t-taḥlīla qabla l-jumuʿa(h).
The two female researchers divided the work so that they could complete the analysis before Friday.
Dual تنجزانِ loses mood nūn after purpose لِـ, yielding لتنجزا. The embedded subject is understood as the same two researchers because both agreement and discourse support that reading.
This interpretation is control-like, not automatic. The particle itself does not mean “with the same subject.”
A different participant can perform the purpose action
Purpose clauses are finite, so they can introduce another subject.
أرسلت الإدارة الدعوات لكي يحضر الخبراء الجلسة الافتتاحية.
ʾarsalati l-ʾidāratu d-daʿawāti li-kay yaḥḍura l-khubarāʾu l-jalsata l-iftitāḥiyya(h).
Management sent the invitations so that the experts would attend the opening session.
Purpose يحضرَ is singular before the overt human plural الخبراء in neutral VSO. With the subject first inside the purpose clause, it would have full agreement: لكي يحضروا after an already established plural subject.
خفضنا صوت المذياع كي تنام الطفلة.
khafaḍnā ṣawta l-midhyāʿi kay tanāma ṭ-ṭifla(h).
We lowered the radio so that the little girl could sleep.
English may use to only when the subjects match, but so that when they differ. Arabic can use the same purpose particles in both structures because its embedded verb expresses agreement.
Negative purpose keeps the subjunctive frame
Use كي لا or لكي لا for a transparent negative purpose. لا negates the intended result; the purpose environment still supplies subjunctive mood.
احتفظت بنسخة من الإيصال كي لا أنسى رقم الطلب.
ʾiḥtafaẓtu bi-nuskhatin mina l-ʾīṣāli kay lā ʾansā raqma ṭ-ṭalab.
I kept a copy of the receipt so that I would not forget the order number.
أغلقنا الباب بهدوء لكي لا يستيقظ الأطفال.
ʾaghlaqnā l-bāba bi-hudūʾin li-kay lā yastayqiẓa l-ʾaṭfāl.
We closed the door quietly so that the children would not wake up.
Before the overt human plural الأطفال, the purpose verb is singular. Fused لئلا “lest/so that not” is also available (formal), but لكي لا is transparent and broadly usable.
Attached لِـ is not لن or command لام
Spelling and mood separate three superficially similar sequences:
| Form | Meaning | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| لِنَفْهَمَ | so that we understand | subjunctive after attached purpose lām |
| لَنْ نَفْهَمَ | we will not understand | subjunctive after separate لن |
| لِنَفْهَمْ / فَلْنَفْهَمْ | let us understand | jussive after command lām |
لنقرأ البيانات ببطء لنفهم الفرق بين المجموعتين.
li-naqraʾi l-bayānāti bi-buṭʾin li-nafhama l-farqa bayna l-majmūʿatayn.
Let us read the data slowly so that we understand the difference between the two groups.
The first لنقرأْ is command lām plus a jussive and takes linking i before the article. The second لنفهمَ is purpose lām plus a subjunctive. Unvocalized spelling is identical, so syntax and intended relation matter.
Weak, geminate, and five-verb forms
Purpose uses subjunctive morphology. Final-wāw دَعَا — يَدْعُو — دُعَاءً, root د-ع-و, retains و in كي يدعوَ. Final-yāʾ رَمَى — يَرْمِي — رَمْيًا, root ر-م-ي, retains ي in لكي يرميَ. Geminate رَدَّ — يَرُدُّ — رَدًّا, root ر-د-د, gives contracted ليردَّ.
وسع المركز القاعة لكي يدعو عددا أكبر من المشاركين.
wassaʿa l-markazu l-qāʿata li-kay yadʿuwa ʿadadan ʾakbara mina l-mushārikīn.
The center enlarged the hall so that it could invite more participants.
أرسلت الصحفية سؤالا مكتوبا ليرد المتحدث بدقة.
ʾarsalati ṣ-ṣaḥafiyyatu suʾālan maktūban li-yarudda l-mutaḥaddithu bi-diqqa(h).
The journalist sent a written question so that the spokesperson would answer precisely.
For the five verbs, delete mood nūn: لكي تكتبي، كي يكتبا، ليكتبوا. Feminine-plural agreement nūn remains: كي يكتبنَ.
Common Mistakes
Losing feminine-dual agreement and keeping mood nūn
❌ الباحثتان قسمتا العمل كي ينجزون التحليل.
Incorrect — the purpose verb refers to the two female researchers, so it needs feminine-dual تنجزا with mood nūn deleted.
✅ الباحثتان قسمتا العمل كي تنجزا التحليل قبل الموعد.
al-bāḥithatāni qassamatā l-ʿamala kay tunjizā t-taḥlīla qabla l-mawʿid.
The two female researchers divided the work so that they could finish the analysis before the deadline.
Detaching purpose لِـ from its verb
❌ افتح الرابط ل تقرأ التعليمات.
Incorrect spelling — purpose lām attaches directly to the subjunctive verb.
✅ افتح الرابط لتقرأ التعليمات المحدثة.
ʾiftaḥi r-rābiṭa li-taqraʾa t-taʿlīmāti l-muḥaddatha(h).
Open the link to read the updated instructions. (To one man.)
Confusing attached لنفهم with separate لن نفهم
❌ شرح المعلم المثال لن نفهم القاعدة.
Incorrect for the intended purpose — separated لن نفهم means ‘we will not understand.’
✅ شرح المعلم المثال لنفهم القاعدة بصورة أفضل.
sharaḥa l-muʿallimu l-mithāla li-nafhama l-qāʿidata bi-ṣūratin ʾafḍal.
The teacher explained the example so that we would understand the rule better.
Using full plural agreement before an overt plural subject
❌ أرسلت الإدارة الدعوات لكي يحضروا الخبراء الاجتماع.
Incorrect as neutral verb-first order — use singular يحضرَ before the overt human plural subject.
✅ أرسلت الإدارة الدعوات لكي يحضر الخبراء الاجتماع السنوي.
ʾarsalati l-ʾidāratu d-daʿawāti li-kay yaḥḍura l-khubarāʾu l-ijtimāʿa s-sanawiyy.
Management sent the invitations so that the experts would attend the annual meeting.
Regularizing a geminate stem
❌ أرسلت السؤال ليردد المتحدث عليه.
Incorrect for Form I ردّ ‘reply’ — purpose requires the contracted subjunctive يردَّ; يردد is a different Form II verb.
✅ أرسلت السؤال ليرد المتحدث عليه بوضوح.
ʾarsaltu s-suʾāla li-yarudda l-mutaḥaddithu ʿalayhi bi-wuḍūḥ.
I sent the question so that the spokesperson would answer it clearly.
Key Takeaways
