استخدم — use or employ as a Form X transitive verb

اِسْتَخْدَمَ is the standard Form-X verb for “use” a tool, method, resource, or piece of information and for “employ” a person. It comes from the sound root خ-د-م. Despite Form X's historical association with seeking or considering something, the modern meaning of this lexical verb must be learned as a whole: استخدم الحاسوب simply means “use the computer,” not “seek the computer's service.”

English use can hide several relationships. Arabic normally makes the thing used a direct object, then expresses its purpose with لـ, في, or a purpose clause. With a human object, استخدم موظفا usually means “employed a worker” and can sometimes suggest putting someone to one's own use; “consulted or enlisted the help of an expert” is often better expressed by استعان بخبير. This page gives the productive contemporary frames without pretending that every English occurrence of use has one automatic translation.

For the shared morphology behind this verb, see the Form-X overview; this entry concentrates on the lexical behavior of استخدم.

The reliable bundle is اِسْتَخْدَمَ — يَسْتَخْدِمُ — اِسْتَخْدِمْ — اِسْتِخْدَامًا. The initial alif is hamzat al-waṣl, so it is written without أ or إ. Its vowel is heard when speech begins with the word, but it elides after a preceding vowel. The root is sound: no radical disappears or contracts.

استخدم الفريق منصة جديدة لإدارة المشاريع.

istakhdama l-farīqu minaṣṣatan jadīdatan liʾidārati l-mashārīʿ.

The team used a new platform to manage its projects. (Formal neutral.)

نستخدم هذه البيانات لتحسين الخدمة.

nastakhdimu hādhihi l-bayānāti litaḥsīni l-khidma.

We use these data to improve the service. (Formal/technical.)

💡
Read the middle vowel carefully: active مُسْتَخْدِم mustakhdim is the user, while passive مُسْتَخْدَم mustakhdam is what is used or the person employed. Unvocalized text writes both as مستخدم, so syntax and meaning must resolve the difference.

Compact paradigm, command, and moods

Form X keeps its consonantal stem stable across ordinary persons. The perfect has forms such as استخدمتُ، استخدمتْ، استخدموا; the imperfect adds the regular prefixes to ـستخدمـ.

lan tastakhdima l-muʾassasatu ṣ-ṣuwara min dūni ʾidhni ʾaṣḥābihā.

The organization will not use the photographs without their owners' permission. (Formal; subjunctive after لن.)

استخدموا الرابط المرفق لتقديم الطلبات.

istakhdimū r-rābiṭa l-murfaqa litaqdīmi ṭ-ṭalabāt.

Use the attached link to submit the applications. (Formal instruction to a group.)

After و, the command's initial vowel disappears in connected speech: واستخدم is pronounced wa-stakhdim, not wa-ʾistakhdim. By contrast, first-person أستخدم begins with pronounced hamzat al-qaṭʿ: ʾastakhdimu “I use.” The presence or absence of hamza in the spelling therefore distinguishes two grammatical forms.

Ranked meanings and valency

1. Use a thing, method, or resource: direct object

The default construction is استخدم + direct object. The object can be concrete—جهازا، مفتاحا، دواء—or abstract—طريقة، لغة، بيانات. Do not insert بـ merely because English has by means of in the background.

استخدم الطبيب تقنية حديثة للكشف عن الورم مبكرا.

istakhdama ṭ-ṭabību tiqniyyatan ḥadīthatan lil-kashfi ʿani l-warami mubakkiran.

The doctor used a modern technique to detect the tumor early. (Formal medical register.)

تستخدم الدراسة مصطلحا أضيق من المصطلح الشائع.

tastakhdimu d-dirāsatu muṣṭalaḥan ʾaḍyaqa mina l-muṣṭalaḥi sh-shāʾiʿ.

The study uses a narrower term than the common one. (Academic.)

2. State the purpose: لـ, في, or a purpose clause

Use لـ + maṣdar for the intended purpose: استخدم المفتاح لفتح الباب. في + maṣdar/noun places the item within a field or process: استخدم البرنامج في التحليل “used the program in the analysis.” A finite purpose clause can use لـ + subjunctive imperfect. These choices add a purpose or domain; they do not replace the direct object.

استخدمت الباحثة برنامجا خاصا في تحليل النتائج.

istakhdamati l-bāḥithatu barnāmajan khāṣṣan fī taḥlīli n-natāʾij.

The researcher used specialized software in analyzing the results. (Academic.)

استخدم المصور مرآة صغيرة ليعكس الضوء على الوجه.

istakhdama l-muṣawwiru mirʾātan ṣaghīratan liyaʿkisa ḍ-ḍawʾa ʿalā l-wajh.

The photographer used a small mirror to reflect light onto the face. (Formal neutral.)

3. Employ a person or make use of someone's services

With a human direct object, استخدم can mean “employ, hire, put to work”: استخدمت الشركة مئة عامل. The neutral occupational noun is often موظف or عامل, while مستخدم for “employee” exists in administrative usage but is not equally customary everywhere. If the intended meaning is respectful reliance on expertise rather than employment, استعان بـ is frequently more exact.

استخدم المصنع عمالا موسميين خلال فترة الحصاد.

istakhdama l-maṣnaʿu ʿummālan mawsimiyyīna khilāla fatrati l-ḥaṣād.

The factory employed seasonal workers during the harvest period. (Formal.)

استعانت اللجنة بخبير مستقل لتقييم العرض، ولم تستخدمه موظفا دائما.

istaʿānati l-lajnatu bikhabīrin mustaqillin litaqyīmi l-ʿarḍi, wa-lam tastakhdimhu muwaẓẓafan dāʾiman.

The committee engaged an independent expert to assess the proposal; it did not employ him as a permanent employee. (Formal contrast.)

4. Use something as something: بوصفه or باعتباره

Formal Arabic can name a role with بوصفه or باعتباره: استخدم المبنى بوصفه مستودعا “used the building as a warehouse.” The object still follows استخدم directly; the second phrase classifies the role assigned to it.

استخدمت البلدية المبنى القديم بوصفه مركزا مؤقتا للإيواء.

istakhdamati l-baladiyyatu l-mabnā l-qadīma biwaṣfihi markazan muʾaqqatan lilʾīwāʾ.

The municipality used the old building as a temporary shelter. (Formal.)

Passive, participles, and high-frequency clusters

The passive is very frequent in technical, academic, and administrative prose: اُستخدم / يُستخدم. It promotes the tool, method, or material and backgrounds the user. A following في phrase commonly names the process or field, while لـ states purpose.

استخدم هذا الأسلوب في ثلاث دراسات سابقة.

ustukhdima hādhā l-ʾuslūbu fī thalāthi dirāsātin sābiqa.

This method was used in three previous studies. (Academic passive.)

يستخدم هذا الجهاز لقياس نسبة الرطوبة.

yustakhdamu hādhā l-jihāzu liqiyāsi nisbati r-ruṭūba.

This device is used to measure humidity. (Technical passive.)

💡
استعمل is also valid formal Arabic for “use.” The two verbs overlap broadly. Do not manufacture a universal contrast in which one is “correct” and the other is not; choose according to the established collocation, such as اسم المستخدم “username” and تعليمات الاستخدام “instructions for use.”

Common Mistakes

Marking the ordinary thing used with بـ

❌ استخدمت بالحاسوب لإعداد الجدول.

Incorrect for neutral MSA ‘I used the computer’—the instrument used is the direct object of استخدم.

✅ استخدمت الحاسوب لإعداد الجدول.

istakhdamtu l-ḥāsūba liʾiʿdādi l-jadwal.

I used the computer to prepare the table.

Writing hamzat al-waṣl as hamzat al-qaṭʿ

❌ إستخدم الفريق الخطة القديمة.

Incorrect spelling—the Form-X perfect begins with hamzat al-waṣl and is written استخدم.

✅ استخدم الفريق الخطة القديمة.

istakhdama l-farīqu l-khuṭṭata l-qadīma.

The team used the old plan.

Confusing the two participles

❌ هذا البرنامج مستخدم على نطاق واسع.

mustakhdim

Incorrect reading for ‘is used’—mustakhdim is active ‘using/user’; the passive adjective is mustakhdam.

✅ هذا البرنامج مستخدم على نطاق واسع في الجامعات.

hādhā l-barnāmaju mustakhdamun ʿalā niṭāqin wāsiʿin fī l-jāmiʿāt.

This program is widely used at universities.
