Form X has the sound-root pattern اِسْتَفْعَلَ / يَسْتَفْعِلُ / اِسْتِفْعَال. Its visible marker is استـ in the perfect, imperative, and verbal noun; the imperfect has a person prefix followed by ستـ. Requesting or seeking the root idea is a real tendency—استغفر “seek forgiveness”—and so is judging something to possess a quality—استحسن “consider good.” Yet a large part of everyday Form X vocabulary is lexicalized: استخدم means “use,” not “seek service.”
For English speakers, Form X is therefore a recognition and vocabulary system, not a translation formula. Store each verb with its root, verified principal parts, valency, and normal prepositions. The neighboring Form IX has a narrow color-and-state inventory; Form X is far broader.
The sound-root pattern and hamzat al-waṣl
Use اِسْتَخْدَمَ / يَسْتَخْدِمُ / اِسْتِخْدَامًا “use; employ,” root خ-د-م. The initial alif supports hamzat al-waṣl. At the beginning of an utterance, استخدم starts istakhdama. After a vowel, the supporting vowel disappears: written فاستخدم is pronounced fa-stakhdama, without a glottal stop. The alif remains in spelling.
| Environment | Pattern | خ-د-م |
|---|---|---|
| perfect, 3 m.sg. | اِسْتَفْعَلَ | اِسْتَخْدَمَ |
| imperfect indicative, 3 m.sg. | يَسْتَفْعِلُ | يَسْتَخْدِمُ |
| imperative, 2 m.sg. | اِسْتَفْعِلْ | اِسْتَخْدِمْ |
| verbal noun | اِسْتِفْعَال | اِسْتِخْدَام |
| active participle | مُسْتَفْعِل | مُسْتَخْدِم |
| passive participle | مُسْتَفْعَل | مُسْتَخْدَم |
استخدمت الباحثة برنامجا مفتوح المصدر لتحليل البيانات.
istakhdamati l-bāḥithatu barnāmajan maftūḥa l-maṣdari litaḥlīli l-bayānāt.
The researcher used open-source software to analyze the data. (Formal, academic.)
راجع الفريق الخيارات فاستخدم الطريقة الأقل كلفة.
rājaʿa l-farīqu l-khiyārāti fa-stakhdama ṭ-ṭarīqata l-ʾaqalla kulfa.
The team reviewed the options and then used the least expensive method. (Formal; connected hamzat al-waṣl.)
The imperfect prefix has a, not the u heard in Forms II–IV: يَسْتَخْدِمُ. There is no initial alif in the imperfect because يـ already makes the cluster pronounceable.
Requesting and seeking: a tendency with real complement frames
Requestive Form X does not package every participant in the same way. اِسْتَغْفَرَ / يَسْتَغْفِرُ / اِسْتِغْفَارًا (root غ-ف-ر) takes the person whose forgiveness is sought as a direct object. اِسْتَأْذَنَ / يَسْتَأْذِنُ / اِسْتِئْذَانًا (root أ-ذ-ن) can take the person asked directly and uses في before the proposed action. اِسْتَفْسَرَ / يَسْتَفْسِرُ / اِسْتِفْسَارًا (root ف-س-ر) normally uses عن for the subject of an inquiry.
استأذنت الموظفة مديرتها في مغادرة المكتب مبكرا.
istaʾdhanati l-muwaẓẓafatu mudīratahā fī mughādarati l-maktabi mubakkiran.
The employee asked her manager's permission to leave the office early. (Formal.)
استفسر المسافران عن شروط تغيير الحجز.
istafsara l-musāfirāni ʿan shurūṭi taghyīri l-ḥajz.
The two travelers asked about the conditions for changing the booking. (Formal VSO; singular verb before a dual subject.)
استغفر الرجل ربه بعد أن أدرك خطأه.
istaghfara r-rajulu rabbahu baʿda ʾan ʾadraka khaṭaʾah.
The man asked his Lord for forgiveness after realizing his mistake. (Formal, religious context.)
English can reuse ask in all three sentences. Arabic chooses a lexical verb and then assigns complements according to that verb. Do not add عن merely because English has ask about, or omit it where استفسر عن requires it.
Estimative meanings: treating something as having a quality
An estimative Form X presents the object through the subject's judgment. اِسْتَحْسَنَ / يَسْتَحْسِنُ / اِسْتِحْسَانًا (root ح-س-ن) means “consider good; approve of.” اِسْتَغْرَبَ / يَسْتَغْرِبُ / اِسْتِغْرَابًا (root غ-ر-ب) means “find strange; be surprised at.” اِسْتَصْغَرَ / يَسْتَصْغِرُ / اِسْتِصْغَارًا (root ص-غ-ر) means “consider small” and can extend to “belittle.” All three are transitive in their common estimative senses.
استحسنت اللجنة اقتراح الخبيرتين وأحالته إلى التصويت.
istaḥsanati l-lajnatu qtirāḥa l-khabīratayni wa-ʾaḥālathu ʾilā t-taṣwīt.

The two female doctors found the delay in the results surprising, although the samples had been sent in the morning. (Formal VSO.)
This tendency does not mean that every adjective supplies a current Form X verb. Check that the lexeme exists and that its modern sense matches the context.
Lexicalized verbs go well beyond “seek” and “consider”
اِسْتَخْرَجَ / يَسْتَخْرِجُ / اِسْتِخْرَاجًا (root خ-ر-ج) means “extract; obtain,” often with a direct object and من for the source. اِسْتَدْعَى / يَسْتَدْعِي / اِسْتِدْعَاءً (root د-ع-و) means “summon; call for; require.” Neither is translated successfully by inserting English seek.
استخرج الفني البطارية التالفة من الجهاز بحذر.
istakhraja l-fanniyyu l-baṭṭāriyyata t-tālifata mina l-jihāzi biḥadhar.
The technician carefully removed the defective battery from the device. (Formal.)
استدعت المحكمة الشاهدتين لسماع إفادتيهما.
istadʿati l-maḥkamatu sh-shāhidaytayni lisamāʿi ʾifādatayhimā.
The court summoned the two female witnesses to hear their statements. (Formal, legal.)
Mood, agreement, and irregular root shapes
Form X takes ordinary imperfect mood endings. Sound يستخدمُ is indicative, لن يستخدمَ subjunctive, and لم يستخدمْ jussive. With one of the five verbs, لن يستخدموا and لم يستخدموا lose nūn. Neutral VSO still uses a singular verb before an overt dual or plural human subject.
لن تستخدم الباحثتان هذه الأداة قبل اختبارها.
lan tastakhdima l-bāḥithatāni hādhihi l-ʾadāta qabla khtibārihā.
The two female researchers will not use this tool before testing it. (Formal VSO; subjunctive singular verb.)
الباحثتان لم تستخدما النتائج الأولية في التقرير.
al-bāḥithatāni lam tastakhdimā n-natāʾija l-ʾawwaliyya fī t-taqrīr.
The two female researchers did not use the preliminary results in the report. (Subject-first dual agreement.)
Root shape changes the surface stem:
| Class | Verified principal parts | Key behavior |
|---|---|---|
| hollow | اِسْتَقَامَ / يَسْتَقِيمُ / اِسْتِقَامَة | root ق-و-م; jussive لَمْ يَسْتَقِمْ |
| final-weak | اِسْتَدْعَى / يَسْتَدْعِي / اِسْتِدْعَاء | root د-ع-و; jussive لَمْ يَسْتَدْعِ |
| geminate | اِسْتَعَدَّ / يَسْتَعِدُّ / اِسْتِعْدَاد | root ع-د-د; final radicals contract under shadda |
| initial-hamzated | اِسْتَأْذَنَ / يَسْتَأْذِنُ / اِسْتِئْذَان | root hamza remains after استـ and changes seat in the verbal noun |

istaʿaddati l-firaqu lil-istijābati lil-ʿāṣifati, wa-staqāma sayru l-ʿamali baʿda l-murājaʿa.
The teams prepared to respond to the storm, and the workflow ran properly after review. (Formal; nonhuman plurals take feminine-singular agreement.)
Common Mistakes
Translating every Form X verb as “seek”
❌ استخدمت الباحثة البرنامج يعني أنها طلبت خدمته.
Incorrect—استخدم is the lexical verb ‘use’; its modern meaning is not calculated as ‘seek service.’
✅ استخدمت الباحثة البرنامج للتحقق من النتائج.
istakhdamati l-bāḥithatu l-barnāmaja littaḥaqquqi mina n-natāʾij.
The researcher used the software to verify the results.
Writing hamzat al-qaṭʿ on the Form X prefix
❌ إستخدم الفريق الطريقة الجديدة.
Incorrect spelling—Form X begins with hamzat al-waṣl, written with plain ا: استخدم.
✅ استخدم الفريق الطريقة الجديدة في التجربة الثانية.
istakhdama l-farīqu ṭ-ṭarīqata l-jadīdata fī t-tajribati th-thāniya.
The team used the new method in the second experiment.
Losing a required preposition
❌ استفسر المسافر موعد الرحلة.
Incorrect for the ordinary ‘inquire about’ frame—استفسر normally selects عن for the topic.
✅ استفسر المسافر عن موعد الرحلة التالية.
istafsara l-musāfiru ʿan mawʿidi r-riḥlati t-tāliya.
The traveler asked about the next departure time.
Keeping a final weak letter in the jussive
❌ لم يستدعي المدير الخبيرتين.
Incorrect in careful MSA—final-weak يستدعي loses ي after jussive لم.
✅ لم يستدع المدير الخبيرتين هذا الصباح.
lam yastadʿi l-mudīru l-khabīratayni hādhā ṣ-ṣabāḥ.
The director did not summon the two experts this morning.
Giving a verb-first clause full plural agreement
❌ استخدموا المهندسون النموذج القديم.
Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular استخدم before an overt plural subject.
✅ استخدم المهندسون النموذج القديم للمقارنة.
istakhdama l-muhandisūna n-namūdhaja l-qadīma lil-muqārana.
The engineers used the old model for comparison.
