Related derived Forms are not competing conjugations of one verb. They are separate lexemes that happen to share a root: عَلِمَ “know,” عَلَّمَ “teach,” أَعْلَمَ “inform,” تَعَلَّمَ “learn,” and اِسْتَعْلَمَ “inquire.” Their family resemblance is useful, but each member has its own meaning, complements, frequency, and register.
English encourages learners to start with a gloss—know, teach, inform—and then hunt for an Arabic pattern. Reverse that workflow. Confirm that the Arabic verb is attested in the intended sense, learn its perfect–imperfect–maṣdar principal parts, and store its valency. A gap in a root family is normal; it is not an invitation to manufacture a missing Form.
The ten-Form lexical network gives the structural map; this page turns that map into a choice procedure.
A practical decision sequence
When several related verbs seem plausible, ask four questions in order:
- What event do I mean? Is someone knowing, causing knowledge, receiving knowledge, or requesting it?
- Which participants must the Arabic verb license? Does it take a direct object, two objects, or a prepositional complement?
- Is this lexeme current in the intended register? A dictionary may record a Classical or rare member that is not the neutral contemporary choice.
- What are its verified principal parts? Root shape can obscure the pattern, and mood or agreement then applies to the actual stem.
The root ع-ل-م: knowledge distributed across different events
This family shows why English near-synonyms do not map to interchangeable Arabic Forms.
| Form | Verified principal parts | Current core sense and frame |
|---|---|---|
| I | عَلِمَ / يَعْلَمُ / عِلْم | know; learn of, often عَلِمَ بِـ |
| II | عَلَّمَ / يُعَلِّمُ / تَعْلِيم | teach someone something |
| IV | أَعْلَمَ / يُعْلِمُ / إِعْلَام | inform someone of something, often أَعْلَمَ شخصًا بِـ |
| V | تَعَلَّمَ / يَتَعَلَّمُ / تَعَلُّم | learn a subject or skill |
| X | اِسْتَعْلَمَ / يَسْتَعْلِمُ / اِسْتِعْلَام | inquire about, normally اِسْتَعْلَمَ عَنْ |
علمت الإدارة بالخلل قبل بدء الاجتماع.
ʿalimati l-ʾidāratu bil-khalali qabla badʾi l-ijtimāʿ.
Management learned of the fault before the meeting began. (Formal; Form I with بـ.)
علمت المدربة الموظفتين طريقة توثيق الشكاوى.
ʿallamati l-mudarribatu l-muwaẓẓafatayni ṭarīqata tawthīqi sh-shakāwā.

أعلمت الشركة العملاء بتغيير شروط الخدمة.
ʾaʿlamati sh-sharikatu l-ʿumalāʾa bitaghyīri shurūṭi l-khidma.
The company informed customers that the terms of service had changed. (Formal; Form IV.)
تعلمت المهندستان استخدام الأداة خلال الدورة.
taʿallamati l-muhandisatāni stikhdāma l-ʾadāti khilāla d-dawra.

استعلم المسافر عن موعد إغلاق البوابة.
istaʿlama l-musāfiru ʿan mawʿidi ʾighlāqi l-bawwāba.
The traveler asked when the gate would close. (Formal; Form X with عن.)
The family has gaps and marginal members. No everyday MSA rule requires Forms III, VII, VIII, and IX to exist for ع-ل-م. Traditional dictionaries record additional rare senses, but a learner should not place them beside these neutral verbs as equally current alternatives.
The root ك-ت-ب: related shape, specialized meanings
The writing family occupies a different set of nodes. Form I كَتَبَ / يَكْتُبُ / كِتَابَةً means “write.” Form III كَاتَبَ / يُكَاتِبُ / مُكَاتَبَةً means “correspond with” and takes the correspondent directly. Form VI تَكَاتَبَ / يَتَكَاتَبُ / تَكَاتُبًا profiles reciprocal correspondence. Form VIII اِكْتَتَبَ / يَكْتَتِبُ / اِكْتِتَابًا is a specialized administrative or financial verb, “subscribe.” Form X اِسْتَكْتَبَ / يَسْتَكْتِبُ / اِسْتِكْتَابًا means “ask or commission someone to write” (formal, relatively uncommon).
كاتب المحرر المؤلفة لطلب مصدر إضافي.
kātaba l-muḥarriru l-muʾallifata liṭalabi maṣdarin ʾiḍāfiyy.
The editor corresponded with the author to request an additional source. (Formal.)
تكاتب الباحثون أشهرا قبل نشر نتائجهم المشتركة.
takātaba l-bāḥithūna ʾashhuran qabla nashri natāʾijihimu l-mushtaraka.
The researchers corresponded for months before publishing their joint results. (Formal VSO.)
اكتتب المستثمران في الصندوق بعد مراجعة نشرة الإصدار.
iktataba l-mustathmirāni fī ṣ-ṣundūqi baʿda murājaʿati nashrati l-ʾiṣdār.
The two investors subscribed to the fund after reviewing the prospectus. (Formal, financial.)
Nothing in the bare label “Form VIII” predicts the financial sense of اكتتب or its preposition في. A root network preserves the association with writing while leaving room for lexical history.
Several Forms can compete in one semantic neighborhood
With root ك-س-ر, Form I كَسَرَ is the ordinary transitive “break something.” Form II كَسَّرَ often profiles breaking thoroughly, repeatedly, or into pieces. Form V تَكَسَّرَ and Form VII اِنْكَسَرَ can both place the affected entity in subject position, but they are not automatically interchangeable. تكسّر often highlights fragmentation or repeated breaking; انكسر is the broad neutral verb “break, become broken.” Context and collocation decide.
كسر العامل اللوح ليفصل الجزء التالف.
kasara l-ʿāmilu l-lawḥa liyafṣila l-juzʾa t-tālif.
The worker broke the panel to separate the damaged section. (Form I, one transitive event.)
كسرت الآلة الصخور الكبيرة إلى قطع صغيرة.
kassarati l-ʾālatu ṣ-ṣukhūra l-kabīrata ʾilā qiṭaʿin ṣaghīra.
The machine crushed the large rocks into small pieces. (Form II, intensive/distributive result.)
تكسر الزجاج عند الحافة إلى شظايا دقيقة.
takassara z-zujāju ʿinda l-ḥāffati ʾilā shaẓāyā daqīqa.
The glass shattered at the edge into fine fragments. (Form V.)
انكسر مقبض الخزانة أثناء النقل.
inkasara miqbaḍu l-khizānati ʾathnāʾa n-naql.
The cabinet handle broke during transport. (Form VII, neutral change of state.)
Meaning and valency outrank a visual analogy
Root خ-ر-ج supplies a particularly useful causative neighborhood. Form I خَرَجَ is intransitive “go out.” Form IV أَخْرَجَ is the common transitive “take out; remove; produce.” Form II خَرَّجَ has established specialized senses such as “graduate students” and “edit/establish the sources of a text,” while Form X اِسْتَخْرَجَ means “extract; obtain.” Forms II, IV, and X can all look “causative” in a loose account, but their modern lexical territories differ.
أخرجت الممرضة الملف من الخزانة، ثم استخرجت منه نتيجة الفحص.
ʾakhrajati l-mumarriḍatu l-malaffa mina l-khizānati, thumma stakhrajat minhu natījata l-faḥṣ.
The nurse took the file out of the cabinet, then extracted the test result from it. (Formal Form IV/Form X contrast.)
This is not a choice between two styles of conjugating خرج. It is a choice between two verbs with different event structures.
Mood and agreement do not choose the Form
Once the lexeme is selected, ordinary grammar supplies aspect, mood, person, number, and gender. لن يستعلمَ is subjunctive Form X after لن; لم يتعلّمْ is jussive Form V after لم. These governors do not alter the lexical choice. Likewise, neutral VSO uses singular agreement before an overt dual or plural human subject, while subject-first order uses full agreement.
لن يستعلم الوفد عن التفاصيل قبل وصول المترجمة.
lan yastaʿlima l-wafdu ʿani t-tafāṣīli qabla wuṣūli l-mutarjima.
The delegation will not inquire about the details before the interpreter arrives. (Subjunctive Form X.)
لم تتعلم الطبيبتان النظام الجديد بعد.
lam tataʿallami ṭ-ṭabībatāni n-niẓāma l-jadīda baʿd.
The two female doctors have not learned the new system yet. (Jussive, singular verb in VSO.)
Weak and geminate roots reinforce the same lesson. Root ق-و-م gives أقام “establish; hold” and استقام “become straight; be sound,” while root م-د-د gives Form VIII امتدّ “extend.” Their surface vowels and contractions must be learned from principal parts, not reconstructed from English.
Common Mistakes
Filling every cell in a ten-Form chart
❌ لكل جذر أفعال شائعة في جميع الصيغ العشر.
Incorrect—root families contain genuine gaps, rare members, and specialized senses.
✅ أتعلم الأفعال المستعملة من كل أسرة جذرية ولا أخترع الأفعال الناقصة.
ʾataʿallamu l-ʾafʿāla l-mustaʿmalata min kulli ʾusratin jidhriyyatin wa-lā ʾakhtariʿu l-ʾafʿāla n-nāqiṣa.
I learn the verbs actually used in each root family and do not invent missing verbs.
Choosing from an English gloss alone
❌ أعلمت الموظفة النظام الجديد.
Incorrect for ‘the employee learned the new system’—أعلم is ‘inform’; use تعلم for acquiring knowledge.
✅ تعلمت الموظفة النظام الجديد خلال أسبوع.
taʿallamati l-muwaẓẓafatu n-niẓāma l-jadīda khilāla ʾusbūʿ.
The employee learned the new system within a week.
Ignoring a lexical preposition
❌ استعلم المسافر موعد الرحلة.
Incorrect in the ordinary ‘inquire about’ frame—استعلم selects عن for the topic.
✅ استعلم المسافر عن موعد الرحلة عند مكتب الاستعلامات.
istaʿlama l-musāfiru ʿan mawʿidi r-riḥlati ʿinda maktabi l-istiʿlāmāt.
The traveler asked about the departure time at the information desk.
Treating two middle verbs as exact synonyms
❌ تكسر وانكسر متطابقان في كل سياق.
Incorrect—both can describe an affected subject, but تكسر often profiles fragmentation or iteration while انكسر is broader.
✅ انكسر المقبض، وتكسر الزجاج إلى شظايا.
inkasara l-miqbaḍu, watakassara z-zujāju ʾilā shaẓāyā.
The handle broke, and the glass shattered into fragments.
Giving full plural agreement in neutral VSO
❌ تكاتبوا الباحثون قبل المؤتمر.
Incorrect in neutral formal VSO—use singular تكاتب before the overt human plural subject.
✅ تكاتب الباحثون قبل المؤتمر لتنسيق عرضهم.
takātaba l-bāḥithūna qabla l-muʾtamari litansīqi ʿarḍihim.
The researchers corresponded before the conference to coordinate their presentation.
Key Takeaways
- A derived Form identifies a stem pattern, not one guaranteed meaning.
- Compare attested family members through principal parts, participant structure, prepositions, collocations, and register.
- Preserve lexical gaps instead of manufacturing a verb for every Form.
- Related Forms can overlap semantically without being interchangeable.
- Mood and agreement apply after the correct lexeme has been chosen; they do not select the derived Form.
