Forms VI–X Pattern Relationships

Verb Forms VI–X add combinations of تـ، نـ، استـ, internal ت, long vowels, or gemination to the three root radicals. Their common semantic tendencies are memorable: Form VI often involves mutual participation, Form VII a middle or resulting state, Form VIII involvement or acquisition, Form IX colors and physical states, and Form X seeking or considering.

Those labels are starting hypotheses. تَعَاوَنَ really does mean “cooperate,” but تَجَاهَلَ means “ignore,” اِكْتَشَفَ means “discover,” and اِسْتَخْدَمَ means “use.” No single English paraphrase covers a whole Form. The patterns help you recognize a dictionary address; attested usage supplies meaning and valency.

Initial alif in VII–X carries hamzat al-waṣl. It is pronounced at the beginning of an utterance and elided after a preceding vowel. It is pattern material, not automatically a root radical.

Learn each derived verb as four linked facts: root, Form, imperfect, and attested meaning with its complements. A semantic label alone is not a usable dictionary entry.

Form VI: تَفَاعَلَ, often involving both sides

Form VI adds تـ to the long-ā shape associated with Form III. It often describes participants acting with or toward one another. Root ع و ن gives Form III عَاوَنَ “assist” and Form VI تَعَاوَنَ “cooperate.”

تعاون الفريقان على حل المشكلة التقنية.

taʿāwana l-farīqāni ʿalā ḥalli l-mushkilati t-tiqniyya(h).

The two teams cooperated to solve the technical problem.

تشاور الأطباء قبل تغيير خطة العلاج.

tashāwara l-ʾaṭibbāʾu qabla taghyīri khuṭṭati l-ʿilāj.

The doctors consulted one another before changing the treatment plan.

The plural participants support a reciprocal reading. Form VI can also describe a process or a conventional lexical action without literal reciprocity.

تزايد الطلب على الطاقة خلال الصيف.

tazāyada ṭ-ṭalabu ʿalā ṭ-ṭāqati khilāla ṣ-ṣayf.

Demand for energy increased over the summer.

Nothing is “increasing one another.” تزايد is an attested inchoative/process verb. Likewise, تجاهل “ignore” must be learned lexically.

تجاهل التقرير مشكلة التمويل تماما.

tajāhala t-taqrīru mushkilata t-tamwīli tamāmā.

The report completely ignored the funding problem.

Form VII: اِنْفَعَلَ and the resulting state

Form VII prefixes اِنْـ in the perfect and يَنْـ in the imperfect. Many Form-VII verbs present an event from the affected participant's side, often translating as an English intransitive or “get/become” construction.

Root ك س ر gives Form I كَسَرَ “break something” and Form VII اِنْكَسَرَ “break; become broken.”

كسر العامل اللوح أثناء نقله.

kasara l-ʿāmilu l-lawḥa ʾathnāʾa naqlih.

The worker broke the panel while moving it.

انكسر اللوح أثناء نقله إلى المخزن.

ʾinkasara l-lawḥu ʾathnāʾa naqlihi ʾilā l-makhzan.

The panel broke while it was being moved to the storeroom.

Arabic Form VII is not simply an English passive. اللوح is the grammatical subject of an intransitive verb; no agent is asserted. Other common verbs include اِنْفَتَحَ “open,” اِنْقَطَعَ “be cut off; stop,” and اِنْخَفَضَ “decrease.”

انقطع الاتصال بالإنترنت لمدة عشر دقائق.

ʾinqaṭaʿa l-ittiṣālu bi-l-ʾintarniti li-muddati ʿashri daqāʾiq.

The internet connection was interrupted for ten minutes.

Not every transitive verb has a Form-VII partner. Learn only attested pairs.

Form VIII: اِفْتَعَلَ and an internal t

Form VIII inserts ت after the first radical. Root ج م ع maps onto اِجْتَمَعَ ijtamaʿa “meet; assemble”: initial hamzat al-waṣl + ج + pattern ت + م ع.

اجتمع أعضاء اللجنة لمراجعة الطلبات.

ʾijtamaʿa ʾaʿḍāʾu l-lajnati li-murājaʿati ṭ-ṭalabāt.

The committee members met to review the applications.

Substitute strong root ك ش ف: اِكْتَشَفَ / يَكْتَشِفُ means “discover.” The template is transparent; the meaning is an established lexical development, not “uncover oneself.”

اكتشف الباحث خطأ في البيانات الأصلية.

ʾiktashafa l-bāḥithu khaṭaʾan fī l-bayānāti l-ʾaṣliyya(h).

The researcher discovered an error in the original data.

Form VIII undergoes regular sound interactions with some first radicals. Root و ص ل appears in اِتَّصَلَ “contact; be connected”: the weak و is not visible, and pattern ت is doubled. Comparison with وَصَلَ “arrive” and وُصُول “arrival” recovers the root.

اتصلت الممرضة بالمريض لتأكيد الموعد.

ʾittaṣalati l-mumarriḍatu bi-l-marīḍi li-taʾkīdi l-mawʿid.

The nurse called the patient to confirm the appointment.

💡
When Form VIII looks irregular, do not promote its ت to the root. Compare Form I or a maṣdar: اتصل، وصل، وصول point to و ص ل.

Form IX: اِفْعَلَّ, a narrow lexical class

Form IX doubles the third radical and is strongly associated with colors and certain bodily or physical states. Root ح م ر gives اِحْمَرَّ / يَحْمَرُّ “turn red; be red,” while خ ض ر gives اِخْضَرَّ “turn green.”

احمر وجهه عندما سمع السؤال المفاجئ.

ʾiḥmarra wajhuhu ʿindamā samiʿa s-suʾāla l-mufājiʾ.

His face turned red when he heard the unexpected question.

اخضرت الحقول بعد هطول الأمطار.

ʾikhḍarrati l-ḥuqūlu baʿda huṭūli l-ʾamṭār.

The fields turned green after the rain.

This is not a productive instruction to put any adjective or root into Form IX. Its inventory is limited and lexical. The final shadda doubles radical 3 as pattern material; it does not prove that ح م ر is a geminate root.

Form X: اِسْتَفْعَلَ, seeking and much more

Form X prefixes اِسْتَـ: اِسْتَفْعَلَ / يَسْتَفْعِلُ. A requestive meaning is clear in اِسْتَغْفَرَ “seek forgiveness” and اِسْتَأْذَنَ “ask permission.”

استأذن الطالب قبل دخول المختبر.

ʾistaʾdhana ṭ-ṭālibu qabla dukhūli l-mukhtabar.

The student asked permission before entering the laboratory.

Root أ ذ ن contains a real hamza in addition to Form-X prefix استـ. Do not discard it during root extraction.

Form X can also mean considering something to have a quality, extracting, using, or simply a lexical action:

استحسن المحرر العنوان الجديد للمقال.

ʾistaḥsana l-muḥarriru l-ʿunwāna l-jadīda li-l-maqāl.

The editor approved of the article's new title.

استخرج الفني البطارية من الجهاز بحذر.

ʾistakhraja l-fanniyyu l-baṭṭāriyyata mina l-jihāzi bi-ḥadhar.

The technician carefully removed the battery from the device.

استخدمت الباحثة برنامجا لتحليل النتائج.

ʾistakhdamati l-bāḥithatu barnāmajan li-taḥlīli n-natāʾij.

The researcher used software to analyze the results.

Trying to translate استخدم as “seek service” would be etymological overreach. Its contemporary lexical meaning is “use; employ.”

A family map with real gaps

Root ف ه م illustrates two useful derived forms without filling the entire table:

FormAttested memberMeaning here
Iفَهِمَunderstand
VIتَفَاهَمَreach an understanding; communicate mutually
Xاِسْتَفْهَمَinquire; ask for clarification

تفاهم الطرفان على جدول زمني جديد.

tafāhama ṭ-ṭarafāni ʿalā jadwalin zamaniyyin jadīd.

The two parties agreed on a new timetable.

The gaps are meaningful: this page does not invent Forms VII–IX for ف ه م. A second root can populate a different subset. ش ر ك has attested تَشَارَكَ (VI) “share with one another” and اِشْتَرَكَ (VIII) “participate; subscribe,” whose exact complements differ.

اشترك سامر في المجلة الرقمية لمدة عام.

ʾishtaraka sāmirun fī l-majallati r-raqamiyyati li-muddati ʿām.

Samer subscribed to the digital magazine for a year.

Common Mistakes

Making every Form VI reciprocal

❌ تجاهل يعني أن شخصين يتجاهل أحدهما الآخر دائما.

Incorrect — تجاهل can be a one-sided act of ignoring.

✅ تجاهل الموظف الرسالة لأنه ظنها إعلانا.

tajāhala l-muwaẓẓafu r-risālata li-ʾannahu ẓannahā ʾiʿlānā.

The employee ignored the message because he thought it was an advertisement.

Treating Form VII as an automatic passive generator

❌ يمكن تحويل كل فعل متعد إلى انفعل بالمعنى المبني للمجهول.

Incorrect — Form VII has lexical gaps and expresses a middle/result, not a mechanical passive.

✅ انفتح الباب عندما ضغطت الزر.

ʾinfataḥa l-bābu ʿindamā ḍaghaṭtu z-zirr.

The door opened when I pressed the button.

Counting Form VIII ت as a radical

❌ جذر اجتمع هو ج ت م.

Incorrect — ت belongs to Form VIII; comparison with جمع reveals ج م ع.

✅ اجتمع الفريق بعد أن جمع المدير الملاحظات.

ʾijtamaʿa l-farīqu baʿda ʾan jamaʿa l-mudīru l-mulāḥaẓāt.

The team met after the director collected the notes.

Treating Form IX as freely productive

❌ أستطيع وضع أي جذر في افعل للحصول على تغير في اللون.

Incorrect — Form IX has a restricted, attested inventory.

✅ احمرت السماء قبل غروب الشمس بقليل.

ʾiḥmarrati s-samāʾu qabla ghurūbi sh-shamsi bi-qalīl.

The sky turned red shortly before sunset.

Translating every Form X as “seek”

❌ استخدم الحاسوب يعني طلب خدمة الحاسوب.

Incorrect — استخدم is the lexical verb “use,” not a compositional request in current MSA.

✅ استخدم الطبيب الحاسوب لعرض الصور.

ʾistakhdama ṭ-ṭabību l-ḥāsūba li-ʿarḍi ṣ-ṣuwar.

The doctor used the computer to display the images.

Key Takeaways

  • Forms VI–X have recognizable templates and useful semantic tendencies, but every verb is a lexical item.
  • Form VI often involves mutual participation; VII often presents a result or middle event; VIII has an internal ت and frequent sound changes.
  • Form IX has a restricted color/state inventory; Form X extends far beyond requestive meanings.
  • Weak radicals and root hamza can disappear, assimilate, or remain inside the derived shape.
  • Preserve empty cells in a root-family map and learn each verb's actual meaning and complements.
