وَضَعَ is the high-frequency Form-I verb “put, place,” from root و-ض-ع. It is an assimilated wāw-initial verb: the root و appears in the perfect, maṣdar, participles, and passive, but drops from the active imperfect يَضَعُ and the imperative ضَعْ. Learning only the unvocalized citation form does not reveal this alternation.
The verb extends naturally from physical placement to intellectual and institutional creation: people يضعون خطة “draw up a plan,” يضعون معيارا “set a standard,” and يضعون حدا لمشكلة “put an end to a problem.” English put also participates in hundreds of phrasal verbs, but those do not transfer mechanically. Arabic وضع has its own direct objects, location phrases, and established collocations.
The assimilated-verb overview explains the wider wāw-initial class; here the focus is the forms and frames particular to وضع.
Lookup card and principal parts
| Item | Verified form | Function |
|---|---|---|
| root and Form | و-ض-ع، Form I | assimilated wāw-initial; normally transitive |
| perfect | وَضَعَ | he put / established |
| imperfect indicative | يَضَعُ | he puts / is setting |
| imperative, 2 m.sg. | ضَعْ | put! |
| maṣdar | وَضْع | putting, placement, establishment; also situation/status |
| active participle | وَاضِع | one who puts, devises, or authors |
| passive participle | مَوْضُوع | placed; also lexicalized “subject/topic” |
| passive | وُضِعَ — يُوضَعُ | was put — is put |
Memorize وَضَعَ — يَضَعُ — ضَعْ — وَضْعًا. The missing wāw in يضع and ضع is a property of this lexical conjugation, not permission to delete و everywhere. It remains in وضعتُ، وضعنا، وضع، واضع، موضوع and reappears in passive imperfect يُوضَعُ yūḍaʿu, where the written wāw combines with the preceding vowel as long ū rather than surfacing as a separate w.
وضعت ليلى المفاتيح على الرف قرب الباب.
waḍaʿat laylā l-mafātīḥa ʿalā r-raffi qurba l-bāb.
Layla put the keys on the shelf near the door. (Formal neutral.)

A compact paradigm for the assimilated stem
The perfect conjugates on وضعـ. The active imperfect and command use ضعـ, while the passive uses وضعـ again.
| Environment | Form | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| perfect samples | وَضَعْتُ، وَضَعَتْ، وَضَعُوا | I/she/they put |
| indicative samples | أَضَعُ، تَضَعِينَ، يَضَعُونَ | I put; you f.sg. put; they put |
| subjunctive | لَنْ يَضَعَ، لَنْ يَضَعُوا | will not put |
| jussive | لَمْ يَضَعْ، لَمْ يَضَعُوا | did not put |
| imperatives | ضَعْ، ضَعِي، ضَعَا، ضَعُوا، ضَعْنَ | put! by addressee |
There is no initial cluster in ضع, so Arabic needs no helping alif. Object pronouns attach directly: ضَعْهُ، ضَعْهَا، ضَعْهُمْ. Mood endings remain regular because the final radical ع is strong.

Ranked meanings and placement frames
1. Put or place an object: direct object plus location
The thing moved is a direct object. The destination is expressed spatially: في for containment, على for a surface, and expressions such as بين، أمام، بجانب، تحت for other relations. English put into normally becomes وضع الشيء في..., not إلى.
وضعت الممرضة الدواء في الثلاجة المخصصة له.
waḍaʿati l-mumarriḍatu d-dawāʾa fī th-thallājati l-mukhaṣṣaṣati lah.
The nurse put the medicine in its designated refrigerator. (Formal neutral.)
ضع الكرسي بين النافذة والطاولة، لا أمام الباب.
ḍaʿi l-kursiyya bayna n-nāfidhati wa-ṭ-ṭāwilati, lā ʾamāma l-bāb.
Put the chair between the window and the table, not in front of the door. (Formal neutral; linking i before the article.)
The destination can also be a state expressed with في: وضع الجهاز في وضع الاستعداد “put the device in standby mode.” For an object plus resulting adjective, Arabic often prefers a more specific verb or an established construction rather than copying English put it ready.
2. Devise, establish, or formulate
Institutional subjects commonly وضعوا خطة، سياسة، قانونا، معيارا، جدولا، ميزانية. Here nothing is physically moved. The underlying idea is that a structured thing is “set down” for others to use. واضع القانون is its drafter or originator; وضع القواعد is the establishment of rules.
وضعت الوزارة خطة خمسية لتحديث شبكة النقل.
waḍaʿati l-wizāratu khuṭṭatan khamsiyyatan litaḥdīthi shabakati n-naql.
The ministry drew up a five-year plan to modernize the transport network. (Administrative/formal.)
يضع الدليل معايير واضحة لقبول الطلبات.
yaḍaʿu d-dalīlu maʿāyīra wāḍiḥatan liqabūli ṭ-ṭalabāt.

3. Put an end or impose a limit: وضع حدا لـ
The fixed frame وضع حدا لـ means “put an end to / set a limit on.” The noun حدا is the direct object; the problem or practice follows لـ. Without context, وضع حدودا can instead mean establishing boundaries or limits, so singular and plural are not freely interchangeable in every expression.
اتخذت الهيئة إجراءات لوضع حد للتأخير المتكرر.
ittakhadhati l-hayʾatu ʾijrāʾātin liwaḍʿi ḥaddin lit-taʾkhīri l-mutakarrir.
The authority took measures to put an end to the repeated delays. (Formal.)
4. Established abstract frames
Several common expressions preserve the placement logic: وضع في الاعتبار / الحسبان “take into consideration,” وضع موضع التنفيذ “put into effect,” وضع تحت تصرف “place at someone's disposal,” and وضع يده على “lay one's hand on,” which can mean locate, identify, or gain control depending on context.
يجب أن نضع احتياجات ذوي الإعاقة في الاعتبار عند تصميم المبنى.
yajibu ʾan naḍaʿa ḥtiyājāti dhawī l-ʾiʿāqati fī l-iʿtibāri ʿinda taṣmīmi l-mabnā.

وضعت الخطة موضع التنفيذ في بداية السنة.
wuḍiʿati l-khuṭṭatu mawḍiʿa t-tanfīdhi fī bidāyati s-sana.
The plan was put into effect at the beginning of the year. (Formal passive.)
Passive and participles
The passive وُضِعَ / يُوضَعُ is common when a rule, object, or plan matters more than its creator. In unvocalized prose, وضع may represent active وَضَعَ “he put” or passive وُضِعَ “was put”; sentence structure and context decide.
وضع الحاجز لحماية المشاة أثناء أعمال الصيانة.
wuḍiʿa l-ḥājizu liḥimāyati l-mushāti ʾathnāʾa ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna.
The barrier was put in place to protect pedestrians during maintenance work. (Formal passive.)
وَاضِع means the person who sets down or devises something, as in واضع النظرية “originator of the theory.” مَوْضُوع is the regular passive participle “placed,” but it has also become the ordinary noun “subject/topic.” A phrase such as موضوع البحث normally means “the topic of the research,” not “something physically placed by the research.”
هذا هو الموضوع الرئيس في اجتماع اليوم.
hādhā huwa l-mawḍūʿu r-raʾīsu fī jtimāʿi l-yawm.
This is the main topic at today's meeting. (Formal neutral; موضوع is a lexical noun.)

Common Mistakes
Keeping the root wāw in the active imperfect
❌ يوضع المدير خطة جديدة كل عام.
yawaḍaʿu
Incorrect active form—the ordinary active imperfect drops the initial root wāw: يضع. Written يوضع represents the passive imperfect when read يُوضَعُ.
✅ يضع المدير خطة جديدة كل عام.
yaḍaʿu l-mudīru khuṭṭatan jadīdatan kulla ʿām.
The director draws up a new plan every year.
Building the command with an unnecessary alif
❌ اوضع الملف على المكتب.
Incorrect—the assimilated imperative is the short form ضع, without an initial alif or wāw.
✅ ضع الملف على المكتب.
ḍaʿi l-milaffa ʿalā l-maktab.
Put the file on the desk.
Copying English “put into” with إلى
❌ وضعت الأوراق إلى الحقيبة.
Incorrect for physical containment—use في ‘in/into,’ not destination إلى.
✅ وضعت الأوراق في الحقيبة.
waḍaʿtu l-ʾawrāqa fī l-ḥaqība.
I put the papers in the bag.
Reading every موضوع as a compositional passive
❌ ناقشنا الشيء الموضوع في الاجتماع.
Unnatural for ‘we discussed the topic’—موضوع is the established noun ‘topic’ in this context; الشيء الموضوع means ‘the thing placed.’
✅ ناقشنا الموضوع في الاجتماع.
nāqashnā l-mawḍūʿa fī l-ijtimāʿ.
We discussed the topic at the meeting.
