ساعد — help with direct objects and في/على constructions

سَاعَدَ is the standard formal-MSA verb “help” or “assist.” The person helped is normally a direct object: ساعدت زميلي “I helped my colleague.” A following task or result is commonly introduced by في or على. Their meanings overlap, but في tends to place the help within an activity, while على presents it as support toward doing or achieving something.

The verb is Form III from root س-ع-د. The long ا is part of the Form-III pattern, not a weak radical: سَاعَدَ يُسَاعِدُ is a regular sound derived verb. The root ع remains audible and written throughout the paradigm; the Form-III overview shows the same stem vowels across the wider class.

passive participleمُسَاعَدٌhelped, assisted; relatively uncommon

The principal-parts chain is سَاعَدَ — يُسَاعِدُ — سَاعِدْ — مُسَاعَدَةً. The command has no helping initial vowel because the derived stem already begins with two pronounceable consonants separated by a long vowel. The active participle مساعد is extremely frequent as the noun “assistant,” including titles such as أستاذ مساعد “assistant professor.”

ساعدت الممرضة المريض على الجلوس.

sāʿadati l-mumarriḍatu l-marīḍa ʿalā l-julūs.

The nurse helped the patient sit up. (Formal neutral.)

يساعد المستشار الشركات الصغيرة في إعداد خططها المالية.

yusāʿidu l-mustashāru sh-sharikāti ṣ-ṣaghīrata fī ʾiʿdādi khuṭaṭihā l-māliyya.

The adviser helps small companies prepare their financial plans. (Formal business register.)

💡
English requires help before the person but does not reveal Arabic case. In Arabic, the person is direct: ساعدتُه، ساعدتُ الطلابَ—not a phrase with لـ.

A compact working paradigm

Form III preserves the stem ساعدـ in the perfect: سَاعَدْتُ، سَاعَدْنَا، سَاعَدُوا. The imperfect uses the derived-form prefix vowel u and an i before the last radical: أُسَاعِدُ، نُسَاعِدُ، تُسَاعِدُ، يُسَاعِدُ. Mood is regular: لن يساعدَ and لم يساعدْ.

لن تساعد زيادة الاجتماعات على حل المشكلة.

lan tusāʿida ziyādatu l-ijtimāʿāti ʿalā ḥalli l-mushkila.

Having more meetings will not help solve the problem. (Formal workplace register.)

ساعدوا كبار السن عند صعود الحافلة.

sāʿidū kibāra s-sinni ʿinda ṣuʿūdi l-ḥāfila.

Help elderly people when they board the bus. (Formal public instruction.)

The morphological passive سُوعِدَ / يُسَاعَدُ is valid, but contemporary prose frequently prefers an active subject, an indefinite-agent active sentence, or تلقى مساعدة “received assistance.” Use the passive when the recipient is the clear discourse center and the helper is unknown or deliberately backgrounded.

سوعدت الأسرة على العثور على سكن مؤقت.

sūʿidati l-ʾusratu ʿalā l-ʿuthūri ʿalā sakanin muʾaqqat.

The family was helped to find temporary housing. (Formal passive; the helper is backgrounded.)

Ranked meanings and valency

1. Help a person: direct object

When context already supplies the task, ساعد + person is complete. Attached object pronouns are especially common: ساعدني، ساعدها، ساعدوهم. A human direct object does not need لـ.

ساعدني زميلي عندما تعطلت سيارتي في الطريق.

sāʿadanī zamīlī ʿindamā taʿaṭṭalat sayyāratī fī ṭ-ṭarīq.

My colleague helped me when my car broke down on the road. (Formal neutral.)

2. Help within an activity: في + noun or verbal noun

Use في when the help is participation in a process, field, or task: ساعد في إعداد التقرير “helped with preparing the report.” A direct person may precede it: ساعدني في إعداد التقرير. This frame answers “in what activity did the help occur?”

ساعد المتطوعون في توزيع الوجبات على الأسر المتضررة.

sāʿada l-mutaṭawwiʿūna fī tawzīʿi l-wajabāti ʿalā l-ʾusari l-mutaḍarrira.

The volunteers helped distribute meals to the affected families. (Formal humanitarian register.)

ساعدتني الباحثة في مراجعة الأرقام قبل النشر.

sāʿadatnī l-bāḥithatu fī murājaʿati l-ʾarqāmi qabla n-nashr.

The researcher helped me review the figures before publication. (Formal academic.)

3. Help toward an action or result: على + verbal noun

Use على when the help enables, facilitates, or contributes toward a result: ساعده على النجاح “helped him succeed,” ساعد على خفض التكاليف “helped reduce costs.” The contrast with في is a tendency, not an absolute rule; both occur with many activities, but على foregrounds the achieved or intended outcome.

ساعد التدريب الموظفين على استخدام النظام الجديد بثقة.

sāʿada t-tadrību l-muwaẓẓafīna ʿalā stikhdāmi n-niẓāmi l-jadīdi bithiqah.

The training helped employees use the new system confidently. (Formal workplace register.)

ساعد انخفاض الأسعار على زيادة الطلب.

sāʿada nkhifāḍu l-ʾasʿāri ʿalā ziyādati ṭ-ṭalab.

The fall in prices helped increase demand. (Formal economic register.)

4. على أنْ + subjunctive when a finite clause is useful

ساعد شخصا على أن يفعل is natural when the complement needs an explicit finite clause, especially with a predicative result such as “become” or with its own complexity. A verbal noun is usually more compact, but أنْ is not an English calque and it requires the subjunctive.

ساعدهم البرنامج على أن يصبحوا أكثر استقلالا.

sāʿadahumu l-barnāmaju ʿalā ʾan yuṣbiḥū ʾakthara istiqlālan.

The program helped them become more independent. (Formal.)

💡
Choose في to present help as participation in a process; choose على to present it as support toward an outcome. With many tasks both are grammatical, so the difference is viewpoint rather than a rigid list.

Common Mistakes

Marking the person helped with لـ

❌ ساعدت للطالب في كتابة الرسالة.

Incorrect English-influenced framing—the person helped is a direct object.

✅ ساعدت الطالب في كتابة الرسالة.

sāʿadtu ṭ-ṭāliba fī kitābati r-risāla.

I helped the student write the letter.

Using إلى for the task

❌ ساعدني إلى حل المشكلة.

Incorrect for ‘helped me solve the problem’—use في for participation or على for support toward the result.

✅ ساعدني على حل المشكلة.

sāʿadanī ʿalā ḥalli l-mushkila.

He helped me solve the problem.

Keeping final ن after أنْ

❌ ساعدهم التدريب على أن يتعاملون مع الضغط.

Incorrect—the plural imperfect is subjunctive after أنْ, so final ن drops.

✅ ساعدهم التدريب على أن يتعاملوا مع الضغط.

sāʿadahumu t-tadrību ʿalā ʾan yataʿāmalū maʿa ḍ-ḍaghṭ.

The training helped them cope with pressure.

Dropping the Form-III long vowel in pronunciation

❌ يساعد هذا العلاج على خفض الحرارة.

yusʿidu hādhā l-ʿilāju ʿalā khafḍi l-ḥarāra

Incorrect reading—the verb is Form III يُسَاعِدُ, with a long ā after s.

✅ يساعد الدواء الجديد على خفض الحرارة.

yusāʿidu d-dawāʾu l-jadīdu ʿalā khafḍi l-ḥarāra.

The new medicine helps reduce the fever.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn سَاعَدَ — يُسَاعِدُ — سَاعِدْ — مُسَاعَدَةً as a regular sound Form-III bundle.
  • Make the person helped a direct object: ساعدني، ساعد الطالب.
  • Use في to foreground participation in a process and على to foreground support toward a result.
  • على أنْ + subjunctive is available when a finite result clause is genuinely useful; the verbal noun remains the compact default.
