Arabic news style is a contemporary MSA genre designed to deliver the newest claim quickly, identify its source, and add context in descending order of importance (formal/journalistic). A headline compresses; a lead restores enough grammar to answer who, what, when, and where; later sentences qualify the claim and explain how it is known.
This architecture affects tense, voice, noun phrases, numbers, and sentence length. It does not license vague attribution or grammatical shortcuts in the body. Headlines may be fragments, but news prose still needs visible agency and evidential stance.
Headlines package time differently from leads
A completed event can appear in a perfect verb headline, a present-tense headline that creates immediacy, or a verbal-noun headline that names the event. These choices frame the event; they do not establish a universal “headline tense.”
| Headline shape | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| perfect verb | أَقَرَّ الْمَجْلِسُ الْمِيزَانِيَّةَ | reports a completed decision |
| imperfect verb | الْمَجْلِسُ يُقِرُّ الْمِيزَانِيَّةَ | presents the development as current or unfolding |
| verbal noun | إِقْرَارُ الْمَجْلِسِ الْمِيزَانِيَّةَ | packages the event as a topic |
The surrounding publication and time stamp help readers interpret the compressed form. In the lead, state the event time directly if sequence matters.
ارتفعت أسعار الوقود بنسبة أربعة في المئة هذا الشهر.
irtafaʿat ʾasʿāru l-waqūdi bi-nisbati ʾarbaʿatin fī l-miʾati hādhā sh-shahr.
Fuel prices rose by four percent this month. (complete news sentence)
ارتفاع أسعار الوقود بنسبة أربعة في المئة خلال شهر.
irtifāʿu ʾasʿāri l-waqūdi bi-nisbati ʾarbaʿatin fī l-miʾati khilāla shahr.
Fuel prices up four percent in a month. (compressed headline style)
These express the same proposition in two news registers. The first is a finite body sentence. The second is a nominal headline and should not become the model for every sentence below it.
Attribution separates fact, claim, and inference
News writers must show who is responsible for a claim. قالت الوزارة إن directly attributes a proposition. بحسب بيان الوزارة marks the document as source. أفادت مصادر مطلعة attributes without naming sources and therefore gives readers less basis for evaluation.
قالت وزارة الصحة إن المستشفيات استقبلت سبعة عشر مصابا.
qālat wizāratu ṣ-ṣiḥḥati ʾinna l-mustashfayāti staqbalat sabʿata ʿashara muṣāban.
The Ministry of Health said that hospitals had received seventeen injured people. (explicit attribution)
بحسب بيان البلدية، سيعاد فتح الجسر صباح الجمعة.
bi-ḥasabi bayāni l-baladiyya(h), sayuʿādu fatḥu l-jisri ṣabāḥa l-jumuʿa(h).
According to the municipality's statement, the bridge will reopen Friday morning. (document-based attribution)
Do not convert قالت الوزارة into the reporter's unqualified assertion. Attribution is stance: it locates responsibility without necessarily endorsing or rejecting the content.
Passive voice organizes information
The internal passive is useful when the affected participant or event is the news topic, or when the actor is unknown.
أغلقت ثلاثة طرق بسبب السيول، ولم تسجل إصابات.
ughliqat thalāthatu ṭuruqin bi-sababi s-suyūl, wa-lam tusajjal ʾiṣābāt.
Three roads were closed because of flooding, and no injuries were reported. (reportive passive)
The first passive foregrounds the roads and the disruption. The second appropriately reports an absence in official records. If a known authority made a contested decision, an active clause is more accountable:
أغلقت الشرطة الطريق بعد العثور على جسم مشبوه.
aghlaqati sh-shurṭatu ṭ-ṭarīqa baʿda l-ʿuthūri ʿalā jismin mashbūh.
Police closed the road after a suspicious object was found. (actor relevant)
Repeated تم + verbal noun is not the defining feature of news Arabic. It often adds weight without improving accuracy. The passive in journalism and administration compares direct passives, active clauses, and nominalizations.
Numbers need grammar and a house style
News organizations choose whether to display Arabic-Indic digits, European digits, or words in particular contexts. Follow the publication's house style consistently. Whatever appears on screen, a broadcaster must read the number with Arabic number grammar.
شارك في الانتخابات ثلاثة وسبعون في المئة من الناخبين المسجلين.
shāraka fī l-intikhābāti thalāthatun wa-sabʿūna fī l-miʾati mina n-nākhibīna l-musajjalīn.
Seventy-three percent of registered voters participated in the election.
The written digits do not remove grammatical responsibility from the spoken form. Percentages may trigger agreement according to the intended head and local editorial convention, so rephrase if agreement would be opaque. Give a precise denominator: 73 في المئة من الناخبين المسجلين, not simply “73 percent” when the base is uncertain.
أسفر الحادث عن مقتل شخصين وإصابة خمسة آخرين.
ʾasfara l-ḥādithu ʿan maqtali shakhṣayni wa-ʾiṣābati khamsatin ʾākharīn.
The incident resulted in two deaths and five other people being injured. (standard news casualty formula)
This formula is compact, but confirm what the source actually counted. مصاب may mean an injured person, while “affected” in an English release can cover a much wider category.
Dense noun phrases need visible attachment
News compresses titles, institutions, dates, and locations around a noun. Arabic iḍāfa and post-nominal adjectives can carry this information, but copying an English premodifier chain creates ambiguous attachment.
أعلنت نتائج الجولة الثانية من مفاوضات وقف إطلاق النار الإقليمية مساء الأحد.
uʿlinat natāʾiju l-jawlati th-thāniyati min mufāwaḍāti waqfi ʾiṭlāqi n-nāri l-ʾiqlīmiyyati masāʾa l-ʾaḥad.
The results of the second round of regional ceasefire talks were announced Sunday evening.
Even this grammatical sentence permits a question: does الإقليمية modify the talks or the ceasefire? If the distinction matters, recast rather than trust proximity alone.
أعلنت مساء الأحد نتائج الجولة الثانية من المفاوضات الإقليمية بشأن وقف إطلاق النار.
uʿlinat masāʾa l-ʾaḥadi natāʾiju l-jawlati th-thāniyati mina l-mufāwaḍāti l-ʾiqlīmiyyati bi-shaʾni waqfi ʾiṭlāqi n-nār.
The results of the second round of regional talks on a ceasefire were announced Sunday evening. (attachment clarified)
A short news model
أعلنت هيئة النقل مساء الثلاثاء تعليق الرحلات على الخط الشرقي لمدة يومين بسبب أعمال الصيانة. وقالت الهيئة إن حافلات بديلة ستنقل الركاب بين المحطات المتأثرة. ومن المقرر أن تستأنف الرحلات صباح الجمعة.
aʿlanat hayʾatu n-naqli masāʾa th-thulāthāʾi taʿlīqa r-riḥlāti ʿalā l-khaṭṭi sh-sharqiyyi li-muddati yawmayni bi-sababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h). wa-qālati l-hayʾatu ʾinna ḥāfilātin badīlatan satanqulu r-rukkāba bayna l-maḥaṭṭāti l-mutaʾaththira(h). wa-mina l-muqarrari ʾan tastaʾnifa r-riḥlātu ṣabāḥa l-jumuʿa(h).
The transport authority announced Tuesday evening that service on the eastern line would be suspended for two days because of maintenance. It said replacement buses would carry passengers between affected stations. Service is scheduled to resume Friday morning.
The lead identifies source, event, duration, and cause. The second sentence attributes the remedy rather than presenting a promise as accomplished fact. The final impersonal formula states a schedule, not a certainty guaranteed by the reporter.
Editing for agency, stance, and density
تم الإعلان عن توقع تنفيذ إعادة فتح الطريق قريبا.
tamma l-ʾiʿlānu ʿan tawaqquʿi tanfīdhi ʾiʿādati fatḥi ṭ-ṭarīqi qarīban.
An expectation that the reopening of the road would be implemented soon was announced. (grammatical but overcompressed and evasive)
قالت البلدية إنها تتوقع إعادة فتح الطريق يوم الاثنين.
qālati l-baladiyyatu ʾinnahā tatawaqqaʿu ʾiʿādata fatḥi ṭ-ṭarīqi yawma l-ithnayn.
The municipality said it expected to reopen the road on Monday. (source, stance, and date explicit)
The revision attributes the forecast, identifies the actor, and supplies a date. It also preserves uncertainty: تتوقع is not ستعيد.
Common Mistakes
Inserting unlabeled dialect into the reporter's voice
The dialect sentence below is grammatical in its own code because the reporter marks it as a quotation. Removing the quotation and label would blur the boundary between the source's wording and the reporter's MSA narration.
وقالت الشركة باللهجة الشامية: «الأسعار رح تزيد الأسبوع الجاي».
wa-qālati sh-sharikatu bi-l-lahjati sh-shāmiyya(h): «il-ʾasʿār raḥ tzīd il-ʾusbūʿ il-jāy».
The company said in Levantine Arabic, ‘Prices will rise next week.’ (explicitly marked direct quotation)
وقالت الشركة إن الأسعار سترتفع الأسبوع المقبل.
wa-qālati sh-sharikatu ʾinna l-ʾasʿāra satartafiʿu l-ʾusbūʿa l-muqbil.
The company said prices would rise next week. (MSA indirect report)
Using antique elevation as a substitute for facts
هبت جموع غفيرة لتشهد الحدث الجلل.
habbat jumūʿun ghafīratun li-tashhada l-ḥadatha l-jalal.
Great throngs surged forth to witness the momentous event. (grammatical literary rhetoric, not sourced neutral reporting)
حضر المهرجان نحو ألفي شخص، بحسب تقدير الشرطة.
ḥaḍara l-mahrajāna naḥwu ʾalfay shakhṣ, bi-ḥasabi taqdīri sh-shurṭa(h).
About two thousand people attended the festival, according to a police estimate. (quantity and source supplied)
Copying an English premodifier chain
اجتماع أزمة أسعار طاقة الحكومة
ijtimāʿu ʾazmati ʾasʿāri ṭāqati l-ḥukūma(h)
a structurally possible but unusably ambiguous chain involving a meeting, crisis, energy prices, and the government
اجتماع حكومي لبحث أزمة أسعار الطاقة
ijtimāʿun ḥukūmiyyun li-baḥthi ʾazmati ʾasʿāri ṭ-ṭāqa(h)
a government meeting to discuss the energy-price crisis (relations made explicit)
Reading every headline ending in full isolation
❌ ارتفاع أسعار الغذاء في يونيو.
irtifāʿun | ʾasʿāri | al-ghidhāʾi | fī | yūniyū
Ungrammatical, disconnected delivery — ارتفاع is the first term of an iḍāfa and therefore cannot take tanwīn before أسعار; the restarts also destroy the phrase.
✅ ارتفاع جديد في أسعار الغذاء خلال يونيو.
irtifāʿun jadīdun fī ʾasʿāri l-ghidhāʾi khilāla yūniyū.
A new rise in food prices during June. (connected headline reading)
Using passive wording to conceal a newsworthy actor
أزيلت الخيام من الساحة.
uzīlati l-khiyāmu mina s-sāḥa(h).
The tents were removed from the square. (grammatical passive; incomplete only if the actor is newsworthy)
أزالت فرق البلدية الخيام من الساحة بأمر من المحكمة.
ʾazālat firaqu l-baladiyyati l-khiyāma mina s-sāḥati bi-ʾamrin mina l-maḥkama(h).
Municipal crews removed the tents from the square under a court order. (actor and authority restored)
Key Takeaways
- Arabic headlines use perfect, imperfect, and nominal forms for different framing effects; the lead restores time and scope.
- Attribution marks responsibility for a claim and must not disappear in paraphrase.
- Use the passive when the affected participant or event is the topic, but name a newsworthy actor.
- Apply number grammar in speech and one documented digit policy in writing.
- Break dense noun phrases when attachment, agency, or evidential stance is not clear on first reading.
