Speeches and Presentations

A successful speech in Modern Standard Arabic is written for ears, not simply transferred from a report to slides. Listeners cannot reread a nested opening phrase, inspect a footnote, or hold six abstract nouns in memory while waiting for the verb. A speaker therefore uses audience address, short clause spines, explicit signposts, strategic repetition, and pauses that follow meaning (formal spoken).

This does not mean turning every presentation into dialect or stripping MSA of case grammar. Prepared public MSA is a contemporary spoken register: its morphology and syntax remain standard, while the delivery selects which endings are heard and how information is grouped. Regional accent is expected; unlabeled regional grammar is a separate choice.

Open by establishing audience, purpose, and route

An opening should orient rather than merely perform ceremony. السيدات والسادة “ladies and gentlemen,” الزميلات والزملاء “female and male colleagues,” and a role-specific address such as أصحاب المعالي (formal/ceremonial) establish the audience. The next sentence should state the subject and, in a presentation, preview its structure.

السيدات والسادة، أهلا بكم. سأعرض اليوم نتائج المرحلة الأولى، ثم أقترح خطوتين للمرحلة المقبلة.

as-sayyidātu wa-s-sāda(h), ʾahlan bikum. sa-ʾaʿriḍu l-yawma natāʾija l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā, thumma ʾaqtariḥu khuṭwatayni li-l-marḥalati l-muqbila(h).

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. Today I will present the results of the first phase and then propose two steps for the next phase. (formal presentation opening)

The address is brief, the finite verb سأعرض arrives early, and ثم tells listeners what will follow. A ceremonial occasion may require praise, protocol titles, or thanks, but a technical briefing normally benefits from reaching the purpose quickly.

الزميلات والزملاء، موضوعنا اليوم هو سلامة البيانات، لا سرعة جمعها فقط.

az-zamīlātu wa-z-zumalāʾ, mawḍūʿunā l-yawma huwa salāmatu l-bayānāt, lā surʿatu jamʿihā faqaṭ.

Colleagues, our subject today is data integrity, not merely the speed of collecting it. (contrastive opening)

Here هو is a legitimate pronoun of separation emphasizing the identification; it is not an English-style present copula inserted automatically. The contrast establishes the talk's stance at once.

Signpost what the listener cannot see

Slides may display headings, but the spoken language must still announce the route. Useful signals include أولا “first,” أنتقل الآن إلى “I now move to,” كما رأينا “as we saw,” بمعنى آخر “in other words,” and سأعود إلى هذه النقطة “I will return to this point.” Each should correspond to a real structural move.

سأقسم العرض إلى ثلاثة أجزاء: المشكلة، ثم الأدلة، وأخيرا التوصية.

sa-ʾaqsimu l-ʿarḍa ʾilā thalāthati ʾajzāʾ: al-mushkila(h), thumma l-ʾadilla(h), wa-ʾakhīran at-tawṣiya(h).

I will divide the presentation into three parts: the problem, the evidence, and finally the recommendation. (road map)

عرضت حتى الآن أسباب التأخر. أنتقل الآن إلى أثره في العملاء.

ʿaraḍtu ḥattā l-ʾāna ʾasbāba t-taʾakhkhur. ʾantaqilu l-ʾāna ʾilā ʾatharihi fī l-ʿumalāʾ.

So far I have presented the reasons for the delay. I now turn to its effect on customers. (transition and backward reference)

انخفضت الكلفة، لكن زمن الانتظار لم يتغير. بمعنى آخر، تحسن جانب واحد وبقي الجانب الآخر كما هو.

inkhafaḍati l-kulfa(h), lākinna zamana l-intiẓāri lam yataghayyar. bi-maʿnan ʾākhar, taḥassana jānibun wāḥidun wa-baqiya l-jānibu l-ʾākharu kamā huwa.

Costs fell, but waiting time did not change. In other words, one aspect improved while the other remained as it was. (audible reformulation)

Signposting does not license filler. تجدر الإشارة إلى should introduce a point whose relevance is not already obvious; repeating it before every slide makes the talk sound written and prevents listeners from distinguishing genuinely important qualifications.

💡
At rehearsal, cover the slides and listen only to the transitions. If you cannot reconstruct the route from the spoken Arabic, the signposts are too weak or too vague.

Rewrite written density for listeners

The same proposition can be entirely grammatical in both a report and a speech, yet require different packaging. Written prose can sustain a long initial frame because readers can look back. Speech benefits from chronological finite clauses and named actors.

في ضوء نتائج المراجعة الشاملة لآليات تنفيذ البرنامج، تقرر إدخال تعديلات على خطة العمل لضمان تحسين سرعة الاستجابة.

fī ḍawʾi natāʾiji l-murājaʿati sh-shāmilati li-ʾāliyāti tanfīdhi l-barnāmaj, taqarrara ʾidkhālu taʿdīlātin ʿalā khuṭṭati l-ʿamali li-ḍamāni taḥsīni surʿati l-istijāba(h).

In light of the comprehensive review of the program's implementation mechanisms, it was decided to amend the work plan to ensure faster responses. (dense written formal style)

راجعنا طريقة تنفيذ البرنامج، ووجدنا أن الاستجابة بطيئة. لذلك عدلنا خطة العمل، وسنقيس النتيجة بعد ثلاثة أشهر.

rājaʿnā ṭarīqata tanfīdhi l-barnāmaj, wa-wajadnā ʾanna l-istijābata baṭīʾa(h). li-dhālika ʿaddalnā khuṭṭata l-ʿamal, wa-sanaqīsu n-natījata baʿda thalāthati ʾashhur.

We reviewed how the program was implemented and found that responses were slow. We therefore amended the work plan and will measure the result after three months. (listener-oriented formal speech)

Both versions report review, problem, decision, and purpose. The spoken version turns hidden institutional processes into a sequence, adds an evaluation point, and tells the audience who will measure the outcome. Its lower nominal density is a design for memory, not a retreat from formality.

Use prepared case endings selectively and correctly

Case is syntactically present whether or not every short ending is voiced. A carefully read ceremonial text may realize many endings (formal/ceremonial). A conference presentation commonly preserves helpful internal endings and uses pausal forms at genuine boundaries. A spontaneous answer may suppress still more short vowels while retaining MSA grammar and lexicon.

ناقش الفريق المقترح الجديد في الاجتماع، ثم أرسله إلى الإدارة.

nāqasha l-farīqu l-muqtaraḥa l-jadīda fī l-ijtimāʿ, thumma ʾarsalahu ʾilā l-ʾidāra(h).

The team discussed the new proposal in the meeting and then sent it to the administration. (prepared delivery: internal case, natural pauses)

The subject الفريقُ and object المقترحَ الجديدَ retain informative internal endings. Final الاجتماع and الإدارة are pausal. The pause does not change their genitive case after في and إلى. Randomly adding nominative -un to easy nouns is not “more formal”; it is a grammatical error when governance requires another case.

For the full delivery continuum, see Case Endings in Formal Speech.

Repetition creates memory and cadence

Written editors often remove repetition, but public speech uses controlled recurrence to establish a theme, mark parallel steps, or prepare applause. Repeat a syntactic frame while changing the informative element. This produces cadence without empty duplication.

نحتاج إلى بيانات أدق، ونحتاج إلى تدريب أفضل، ونحتاج قبل ذلك كله إلى مسؤولية واضحة.

naḥtāju ʾilā bayānātin ʾadaqq, wa-naḥtāju ʾilā tadrībin ʾafḍal, wa-naḥtāju qabla dhālika kullihi ʾilā masʾūliyyatin wāḍiḥa(h).

We need more precise data, we need better training, and before all that we need clear responsibility. (formal rhetorical parallelism)

The third member breaks the simple pattern just enough to give the conclusion weight. Three balanced units are easy to hear; seven nearly identical ones become ceremonial padding.

لم نأت اليوم لتبرير التأخر، بل لفهم أسبابه، وتصحيح مساره، ومنع تكراره.

lam naʾti l-yawma li-tabrīri t-taʾakhkhur, bal li-fahmi ʾasbābih, wa-taṣḥīḥi masārih, wa-manʿi takrārih.

We have not come today to justify the delay, but to understand its causes, correct its course, and prevent its recurrence. (cadenced contrast and three-part close)

💡
Repetition is effective when the audience can predict the frame but still needs to hear the final word. If both frame and content are predictable, shorten the passage.

A short presentation model

masāʾa l-khayr. sa-ʾataḥaddathu l-yawma ʿani zdiḥāmi l-ʿiyādāt. ʾawwalan, sa-ʾaʿriḍu mā taqūluhu l-bayānāt. thāniyan, sa-ʾuwaḍḍiḥu ʾayna yaḥduthu t-taʾakhkhur. wa-ʾakhīran, sa-ʾaqtariḥu tajribata niẓāmi mawāʿīda jadīdin fī ʿiyādatayn. tushīru l-ʾarqāmu ʾilā ʾanna l-mushkilata tatarakkazu fī s-sāʿati l-ʾūlā mina ṣ-ṣabāḥ, lākinnanā lā naʿrifu baʿdu sababa dhālik. li-dhālika ʾaqtariḥu ʾan nakhtabira l-ḥalla muddata shahr, thumma nanshura n-natāʾija kāmila(h).

Good evening. Today I will speak about crowding in clinics. First, I will present what the data show. Second, I will explain where the delay occurs. Finally, I will propose testing a new appointment system in two clinics. The figures indicate that the problem is concentrated in the first hour of the morning, but we do not yet know why. I therefore propose that we test the solution for one month and then publish the full results. (short presentation model)

The model gives a road map, distinguishes observation from uncertainty, and ends with a concrete proposal. The first person makes stance and agency audible. Short sentences and repeated سـ forms create forward movement without sacrificing formal grammar.

Editing a slide script

تم من خلال اللجنة القيام بتنفيذ عملية دراسة للخيارات المتاحة بغرض الوصول إلى اتخاذ قرار مناسب.

tamma min khilāli l-lajnati l-qiyāmu bi-tanfīdhi ʿamaliyyati dirāsatin li-l-khiyārāti l-mutāḥati bi-gharaḍi l-wuṣūli ʾilā ttikhādhi qarārin munāsib.

Through the committee, a process of studying the available options was implemented in order to arrive at taking an appropriate decision. (grammatical but unhearably dense slide script)

درست اللجنة الخيارات المتاحة، وستعلن قرارها يوم الخميس.

darasati l-lajnatu l-khiyārāti l-mutāḥa(h), wa-satuʿlinu qarārahā yawma l-khamīs.

The committee studied the available options and will announce its decision on Thursday. (audience-ready revision)

The revision restores the actor, divides past work from future action, and supplies the date listeners need. A slide may still use the noun heading دراسة الخيارات, while the speaker supplies the finite clause.

Common Mistakes

Building a vocative with a definite article after يا

❌ يا الحضور الكريم، سنبدأ الآن.

Incorrect neutral vocative construction: a definite description after yā requires ʾayyuhā here.

✅ أيها الحضور الكريم، سنبدأ الآن.

ʾayyuhā l-ḥuḍūru l-karīm, sanabdaʾu l-ʾān.

Esteemed audience, we will begin now. (formal address)

Letting an unlabeled dialect form carry the presentation spine

رح أحكي لكم هلأ عن النتايج.

raḥ ʾaḥkī lakum hallaʾ ʿani n-natāyij.

I'm going to tell you now about the results. (Levantine Arabic; valid regional speech, not unmarked MSA)

سأتحدث الآن عن النتائج الرئيسة.

sa-ʾataḥaddathu l-ʾāna ʿani n-natāʾiji r-raʾīsa(h).

I will now discuss the main results. (cross-regional spoken MSA)

Using literary elevation in an ordinary briefing

يا معشر الحاضرين، ألا فاعلموا أن الأمر جلل.

yā maʿshara l-ḥāḍirīn, ʾalā fa-ʿlamū ʾanna l-ʾamra jalal.

O company of those present, know that the matter is grave. (valid literary/archaizing rhetoric, disproportionate in a routine staff briefing)

هذه المشكلة عاجلة لأنها تؤخر خدمة المرضى.

hādhihi l-mushkilatu ʿājilatun li-ʾannahā tuʾakhkhiru khidmata l-marḍā.

This problem is urgent because it delays patient care. (direct contemporary briefing style)

Reading an English-style modifier chain from a slide

نتائج تقييم جودة خدمة مركز اتصال العملاء الجديدة

natāʾiju taqyīmi jawdati khidmati markazi ttiṣāli l-ʿumalāʾi l-jadīda(h)

an ambiguous slide heading: ‘new’ can attach to the results or the service

النتائج الجديدة لتقييم جودة الخدمة في مركز اتصال العملاء

an-natāʾiju l-jadīdatu li-taqyīmi jawdati l-khidmati fī markazi ttiṣāli l-ʿumalāʾ

the new results of the service-quality evaluation at the customer call center (attachment audible)

Treating every ending as a performance requirement

سنقدم التقرير الجديد إلى مجلس الإدارة.

sanuqaddimu t-taqrīra l-jadīda ʾilā majlisi l-ʾidārati.

We will present the new report to the board of directors. (valid fully inflected continuous reading)

سنقدم التقرير الجديد غدا إلى مجلس الإدارة.

sanuqaddimu t-taqrīra l-jadīda ghadan ʾilā majlisi l-ʾidāra(h).

We will present the new report to the board tomorrow. (prepared speech with natural final pause)

Key Takeaways

  • Establish audience, subject, and route at the beginning instead of relying on ceremonial padding.
  • Use audible signposts for real transitions, contrasts, summaries, and returns.
  • Convert dense written frames into listener-sized finite clauses with explicit agency and chronology.
  • Select case realization according to syntax, preparation, and genuine phrase boundaries—not prestige.
  • Use parallel repetition to create memory and cadence, then stop before it becomes empty formula.
