Result Clauses with لذلك، لذا، بحيث، فـ

A result relation answers “what followed from that?” Modern Standard Arabic can present the consequence as a new sentence with لذلك or لذا, embed it as the outcome of a degree or manner with بحيث, or attach it tightly to the preceding event with فـ. English often uses so for all three, but Arabic makes different claims about syntax and discourse structure.

For the narrower mood contrast involving result فـ after directives and negation, see result fāʾ and the subjunctive. This page treats the broader architecture of consequence.

None of these result linkers automatically puts an imperfect verb in the subjunctive. If a result contains لم، لن، أنْ, that local particle—not the result relation—governs the verb.

From two facts to a result relation

Begin with two complete assertions:

تعطلت شبكة الدفع. أوقف المتجر الطلبات الإلكترونية مؤقتا.

taʿaṭṭalat shabakatu d-dafʿ. ʾawqafa l-matjaru ṭ-ṭalabāti l-ʾilikturūniyyata muʾaqqatan.

The payment network failed. The store temporarily stopped online orders.

The second fact becomes an inference from the first when لذلك introduces it:

تعطلت شبكة الدفع، لذلك أوقف المتجر الطلبات الإلكترونية مؤقتا.

taʿaṭṭalat shabakatu d-dafʿi, lidhālika ʾawqafa l-matjaru ṭ-ṭalabāti l-ʾilikturūniyyata muʾaqqatan.

The payment network failed, so the store temporarily stopped online orders.

Both sides can stand independently. لذلك is therefore a connective expression inside the result sentence, not a subordinating particle like English because. The comma helps readers see the boundary, and a semicolon or full stop is also possible when the clauses are long.

💡
Ask whether the consequence is a new assertion or part of the preceding clause's internal description. Choose لذلك/لذا for a new inference and بحيث for an embedded outcome.

لذلك and لذا: explicit conclusions

لذلك means “therefore / for that reason.” It points back to a fact, argument, or whole stretch of discourse. It is neutral in formal contemporary prose and speech. لذا is a shorter connective with nearly the same inferential force; it is especially common in concise written and institutional language (formal).

وصلت الشحنة متأخرة، لذلك سنعيد جدولة أعمال التركيب.

waṣalati sh-shiḥnatu mutaʾakhkhiratan, lidhālika sanuʿīdu jadwalata ʾaʿmāli t-tarkīb.

The shipment arrived late, so we will reschedule the installation work.

لم تكتمل الوثائق المطلوبة؛ لذا تعذر إصدار الترخيص هذا الأسبوع.

lam taktamili l-wathāʾiqu l-maṭlūbatu; lidhā taʿadhdhara ʾiṣdāru t-tarkhīṣi hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.

The required documents were incomplete; therefore, the permit could not be issued this week. (Formal administrative prose.)

These linkers do not require the same subject: the shipment arrives, then “we” reschedule; documents are incomplete, then issuance becomes impossible. Nor do they govern case or mood in the result sentence. In سنُعيد the future indicative is licensed normally.

They can occur clause-initially when their antecedent is a previous sentence:

لم تصل موافقة الجهة الممولة. لذلك، لن يبدأ الفريق المرحلة الثانية غدا.

lam taṣil muwāfaqatu l-jihati l-mumawwila(h). lidhālika, lan yabdaʾa l-farīqu l-marḥalata th-thāniyata ghadan.

The funding body's approval has not arrived. Therefore, the team will not begin the second phase tomorrow.

The subjunctive يبدأَ is due to لن. لذلك simply links this whole result to the previous sentence.

بحيث: an outcome inside the first clause

Result بحيث means “so that / such that / in such a way that.” Rather than merely placing one independent fact after another, it characterizes the degree, arrangement, or manner of the first situation by its consequence.

ارتفع منسوب المياه بحيث غمرت المياه الطريق الساحلي.

irtafaʿa mansūbu l-miyāhi biḥaythu ghamarati l-miyāhu ṭ-ṭarīqa s-sāḥiliyy.

The water level rose so much that the water flooded the coastal road.

The flooding is not merely the next item in a narrative; it measures the practical extent of the rise. A negative result works the same way:

كان الشرح سريعا بحيث لم يستطع المشاركون تدوين الملاحظات.

kāna sh-sharḥu sarīʿan biḥaythu lam yastaṭiʿi l-mushārikūna tadwīna l-mulāḥaẓāt.

The explanation was so fast that the participants could not take notes.

Here لم governs jussive يستطعْ; connected speech supplies a helping i before the article. بحيث itself does not govern the jussive.

An imperfect directly after بحيث remains indicative when no other governor appears:

رتبت الإدارة المواعيد بحيث يستطيع الموظفون المشاركة من دون تعطيل العمل.

rattabati l-ʾidāratu l-mawāʿīda biḥaythu yastaṭīʿu l-muwaẓẓafūna l-mushārakata min dūni taʿṭīli l-ʿamal.

Management arranged the schedules in such a way that the employees can participate without disrupting work.

This sentence can imply an intended arrangement as well as its enabled result. If purpose alone is central, لكي يستطيع الموظفون states that aim more directly. بحيث focuses on the configuration and its consequence.

Result فـ: a tightly attached consequence

The one-letter conjunction فـ attaches to the following word. It presents the second event as following naturally or promptly from the first—“and so,” “thereupon,” or simply “so.” It is tighter and more event-like than the explicit inference marker لذلك.

انتهى وقت التسجيل، فأغلق النظام الاستمارة تلقائيا.

intahā waqtu t-tasjīli, fa-ʾaghlaqa n-niẓāmu l-istimārata tilqāʾiyyan.

The registration period ended, so the system closed the form automatically.

سمع الحارس صوت الإنذار فدعا فريق الطوارئ فورا.

samiʿa l-ḥārisu ṣawta l-ʾindhāri fa-daʿā farīqa ṭ-ṭawāriʾi fawran.

The guard heard the alarm and consequently called the emergency team at once.

The perfect دعا is unchanged; ordinary result فـ does not govern subjunctive mood. Do not confuse this with the specialized “causal/result fāʾ” after certain negated or directive expressions, where an ensuing imperfect may be subjunctive.

Result فـ is also required before many conditional answers that cannot stand as a bare verbal response, including answers beginning with سـ، سوف، لن، قد, a nominal sentence, or an imperative:

إذا تأخر القطار، فسنبلغ الفندق بموعد الوصول الجديد.

ʾidhā taʾakhkhara l-qiṭāru, fa-sanuballighu l-funduqa bi-mawʿidi l-wuṣūli l-jadīd.

If the train is delayed, we will inform the hotel of the new arrival time.

Here فـ marks the apodosis as the result of the condition. It does not itself create the future form.

Clause order and punctuation

Cause normally precedes result in reasoning because لذلك، لذا، فـ point backward. A writer can foreground the decision and supply its grounds afterward, but the backward reference must remain clear:

لذلك أوقفنا التجربة: فقد ارتفعت حرارة الجهاز فوق الحد الآمن.

lidhālika ʾawqafnā t-tajribata: fa-qadi rtafaʿat ḥarāratu l-jihāzi fawqa l-ḥaddi l-ʾāmin.

For that reason, we stopped the experiment: the device's temperature had risen above the safe limit. (Result foregrounded; the colon introduces its evidence.)

This is not a simple reversal in which لذلك suddenly means “because.” Its antecedent lies in the prior discourse, while فقد after the colon supplies supporting evidence. By contrast, بحيث belongs after the situation it measures and is rarely fronted away from it.

💡
A comma, semicolon, or colon can display the logical architecture, but punctuation never supplies the relation. The linker still has to tell readers whether they are seeing an inference, an embedded outcome, or a tightly sequenced consequence.

A formal paragraph

أظهرت المراجعة أن بعض السجلات تفتقر إلى بيانات أساسية؛ لذلك لن تعتمد اللجنة النسخة الحالية، وستعاد صياغة الاستمارة بحيث يستطيع المتقدمون إرفاق الوثائق المطلوبة، فإذا اكتملت التعديلات قبل الخميس، فسيبدأ الاختبار التجريبي مطلع الأسبوع المقبل.

ʾaẓharati l-murājaʿatu ʾanna baʿḍa s-sijillāti taftaqiru ʾilā bayānātin ʾasāsiyyatin; lidhālika lan taʿtamida l-lajnatu n-nuskhata l-ḥāliyata, wa-satuʿādu ṣiyāghatu l-istimārati biḥaythu yastaṭīʿu l-mutaqaddimūna ʾirfāqa l-wathāʾiqi l-maṭlūbati, fa-ʾidhā ktamalati t-taʿdīlātu qabla l-khamīsi, fa-sayabdaʾu l-ikhtibāru t-tajrībiyyu maṭlaʿa l-ʾusbūʿi l-muqbil.

The review showed that some records lack essential data; therefore, the committee will not approve the current version, and the form will be reformulated so that applicants can attach the required documents. If the changes are completed before Thursday, pilot testing will begin early next week. (Formal institutional prose.)

The paragraph moves from evidence to explicit inference, then to an enabled outcome, then to a conditional result. Each verb's mood comes from its own environment: تعتمدَ is subjunctive after لن, while يستطيعُ remains indicative after بحيث.

Common Mistakes

Using an Arabic comma as English “so”

❌ انتهى المخزون، أوقفنا المبيعات.

Incorrect—the comma alone does not express the consequence relation.

✅ انتهى المخزون، لذلك أوقفنا المبيعات حتى وصول الشحنة الجديدة.

intahā l-makhzūnu, lidhālika ʾawqafnā l-mabīʿāti ḥattā wuṣūli sh-shiḥnati l-jadīda(h).

The stock ran out, so we stopped sales until the new shipment arrives.

Giving بحيث an automatic subjunctive

❌ صممنا الجدول بحيث يستطيع الموظفون المشاركة.

ṣammamnā l-jadwala biḥaythu yastaṭīʿa l-muwaẓẓafūna l-mushārakata

Incorrect reading—without أنْ or another governor, يستطيع is indicative yastaṭīʿu.

✅ صممنا الجدول بحيث يستطيع الموظفون المشاركة عن بعد.

ṣammamnā l-jadwala biḥaythu yastaṭīʿu l-muwaẓẓafūna l-mushārakata ʿan buʿd.

We designed the schedule so that employees can participate remotely.

Merging أنْ and أنّ after a degree expression

❌ كان التأخير طويلا إلى حد أن الركاب يغادروا المحطة.

Incorrect hybrid—the noun الركاب requires heavy أنّ and its predicate remains indicative.

✅ كان التأخير طويلا إلى حد أن الركاب غادروا المحطة.

kāna t-taʾkhīru ṭawīlan ʾilā ḥaddi ʾanna r-rukkāba ghādarū l-maḥaṭṭa(h).

The delay was so long that the passengers left the station.

Omitting apodosis فـ

❌ إذا تعذر إصلاح الجهاز سنستبدله غدا.

Incorrect in careful formal prose—the future result introduced by سـ should carry apodosis فـ.

✅ إذا تعذر إصلاح الجهاز، فسنستبدله غدا.

ʾidhā taʿadhdhara ʾiṣlāḥu l-jihāzi, fa-sanastabdiluhu ghadan.

If the device cannot be repaired, we will replace it tomorrow.

Ignoring a local mood governor

❌ ارتفعت الرسوم، لذلك لم يستطيعون إكمال التسجيل.

Incorrect—لم requires jussive يستطيعوا and deletes the five-verb nūn.

✅ ارتفعت الرسوم، لذلك لم يستطيعوا إكمال التسجيل في الموعد.

irtafaʿati r-rusūmu, lidhālika lam yastaṭīʿū ʾikmāla t-tasjīli fī l-mawʿid.

The fees rose, so they could not complete registration on time.

Backshifting a still-current result

❌ حدث تسرب أمس، لذلك كان المبنى مغلقا الآن.

Incorrect when the building remains closed now—كان shifts the closure into the past.

✅ حدث تسرب أمس، لذلك المبنى مغلق الآن.

ḥadatha tasarrubun ʾamsi, lidhālika l-mabnā mughlaqun al-ʾān.

There was a leak yesterday, so the building is closed now.

Key Takeaways

  • لذلك and formal concise لذا introduce a new consequence and do not govern verbal mood.
  • بحيث embeds an outcome that characterizes degree, manner, or arrangement; a following imperfect is ordinarily indicative unless another governor appears.
  • Attached فـ presents a tight consequence and also marks many conditional answers.
  • Clause order is not freely reversible: result markers normally point to an earlier cause or premise.
  • Arabic tense follows the actual timeline, not automatic English backshift.
