Arabic فـ links what follows tightly to what precedes. Depending on the clause, it can mean “and immediately,” “so,” “therefore,” or “then.” The shared logic is not one English translation but a discourse relation: the second event is presented as the prompt next step, the consequence, or the formally marked answer to a condition.
In contemporary Modern Standard Arabic (formal), فـ is a prefix: write فدخل، فالنتيجة، فلن rather than leaving ف on its own. It normally governs neither noun case nor verb mood. When the following form is subjunctive or jussive, a different governor—or the special result construction after a request or negation—must explain that morphology.
For a compact inventory of the particle's other discourse functions, see the core particle فـ page.
Immediate sequence: no relevant intervening stage
As فاء التعقيب, فـ orders two events and presents the second as following directly from the first. The interval need not be literally instantaneous; the point is that the account recognizes no important stage between them.
وصل الفني ففتحنا له باب المختبر.
waṣala l-fanniyyu fa-fataḥnā lahu bāba l-mukhtabar.
The technician arrived, so we opened the laboratory door for him. (Formal neutral.)
The two-clause build-up is وصل الفني “the technician arrived” + فتحنا له الباب “we opened the door for him.” Adding prefixed فـ tells the reader to interpret the opening as the direct next event.
أنهت سلمى المكالمة فأرسلت الملخص إلى فريقها.
ʾanhat salmā l-mukālamata fa-ʾarsalati l-mulakhkhaṣa ʾilā farīqihā.
Salma ended the call and immediately sent the summary to her team. (Formal neutral.)
Compare the same events under three linkers:
أغلق الحارس البوابة وراجع القائمة.
ʾaghlaqa l-ḥārisu l-bawwābata wa-rājaʿa l-qāʾima(h).
The guard closed the gate and checked the list. (و merely adds the second event.)
أغلق الحارس البوابة فراجع القائمة.
ʾaghlaqa l-ḥārisu l-bawwābata fa-rājaʿa l-qāʾima(h).
The guard closed the gate and then promptly checked the list. (Tight sequence.)
أغلق الحارس البوابة ثم راجع القائمة.
ʾaghlaqa l-ḥārisu l-bawwābata thumma rājaʿa l-qāʾima(h).
The guard closed the gate and later checked the list. (A separate later stage.)
The normal order is cause or earlier event first, followed by فـ and its consequence. Reversing the clauses usually reverses the claimed relation rather than merely changing style:
انخفضت الحرارة فتجمد الماء.
inkhafaḍati l-ḥarāratu fa-tajammada l-māʾ.
The temperature fell, so the water froze. (The order encodes cause then result.)
تجمد الماء فانخفضت الحرارة would claim that the freezing came first and led to the fall in temperature. English sometimes rearranges information with because; bare فـ does not perform that reversal. To front a reason, use an explicit causal frame such as لأنّ or بما أنّ.
Consequence without special mood government
After an ordinary positive statement, resultative فـ connects two factual clauses but does not itself make an imperfect subjunctive.
يزداد الطلب في الصيف فترتفع الأسعار عادة.
yazdādu ṭ-ṭalabu fī ṣ-ṣayfi fa-tartafiʿu l-ʾasʿāru ʿāda(h).
Demand increases in summer, so prices usually rise. (Formal analytical statement; ترتفع is indicative.)
كانت الطريق مغلقة فاتخذ السائق مسارا بديلا.
kānati ṭ-ṭarīqu mughlaqatan fa-ttakhadha s-sāʾiqu masāran badīlan.
The road was closed, so the driver took an alternative route. (Formal narrative.)
English can use so for purpose—“I called so that they would know”—but Arabic distinguishes a resulting fact from an intended goal. Use لكي، كي، حتى or من أجل أن for purpose, not resultative فـ alone.
The special subjunctive after a request or negation
After a genuine command, prohibition, question, wish, or negation, فـ can introduce an intended or entailed result. In this فاء السببية construction (formal), traditional analysis supplies an implicit أنْ, so the following imperfect is subjunctive.
راجعوا الحسابات فتكتشفوا مصدر الفرق.
rājiʿū l-ḥisābāti fa-taktashifū maṣdara l-farq.
Review the accounts, and as a result you will discover the source of the discrepancy. (Addressing a masculine or mixed group; formal.)
Underlying تكتشفونَ is one of the five verbs. Its mood nūn disappears in the subjunctive فتكتشفوا. By contrast, factual تراجعون الحسابات فتكتشفون الأخطاء “you review the accounts and therefore discover errors” has two indicative verbs because it is a positive assertion, not a request followed by its projected result.
لا تؤجل الفحص فيتفاقم العطل.
lā tuʾajjili l-faḥṣa fa-yatafāqama l-ʿuṭl.
Do not postpone the inspection and thereby let the malfunction worsen. (Formal warning.)
The first verb is jussive after prohibitive لا; the result فيتفاقمَ is subjunctive. The two moods have different governors even though one sentence contains both.
ساعد المنسق فيدعوك إلى الجلسة المغلقة.
sāʿidi l-munassiqa fa-yadʿuwaka ʾilā l-jalsati l-mughlaqa(h).
Help the coordinator, and as a result he will invite you to the closed session. (Formal.)
Final-weak يدعوَك retains و in the subjunctive. Deleting it would incorrectly imitate a jussive such as لم يدعُ.
فـ in the answer to a condition
Conditional Arabic often uses فـ as فاء جواب الشرط before a result that cannot stand as a simple bare jussive answer. This is a linking requirement, not the causative-subjunctive construction above. Use it before a nominal clause, an imperative, or a result beginning with elements such as سـ، سوف، لن، قد، ما، or لا.
إن اكتملت المراجعة فالنسخة جاهزة للنشر.
ʾini ktamalati l-murājaʿatu fa-n-nuskhatu jāhizatun lin-nashr.
If the review is complete, the copy is ready for publication. (Nominal result clause; formal.)
إن تصل الموافقة اليوم فسوف نبدأ التنفيذ غدا.
ʾin taṣili l-muwāfaqatu l-yawma fa-sawfa nabdaʾu t-tanfīdha ghadan.
If approval arrives today, we will begin implementation tomorrow. (Formal.)
Here conditional إنْ makes تصلْ jussive; connected speech supplies a helping i before the article. سوف then licenses an indicative future clause. فـ only attaches that independently formed clause to the condition.
Attachment, subjects, tense, and punctuation
Attach فـ to the first written word of its unit: فدخل، فهي، فالقرار، فلن. A changed subject must be expressed or made clear; a continuing subject can remain implicit because the verb carries agreement.
خرجت المديرة من الاجتماع فطلب مساعدها نسخة من المحضر.
kharajati l-mudīratu mina l-ijtimāʿi fa-ṭalaba musāʿiduhā nuskhatan mina l-maḥḍar.
The director left the meeting, so her assistant requested a copy of the minutes. (The second clause has a new subject.)
Tense is interpreted inside each clause. Arabic does not mechanically backshift because the first verb is past: قال إنه سيعود means “he said that he would return,” with future سـ relative to the saying.
A comma is helpful between long clauses but unnecessary between two very short units. It never substitutes for the connector. In a formal paragraph (academic), فـ can advance an argument as well as a narrative:
تظهر البيانات أن الاستهلاك انخفض خلال الربع الأخير، فقد حسنت المؤسسة كفاءة أجهزتها، وإذا استمر هذا الاتجاه فستحقق هدفها السنوي قبل الموعد.
tuẓhiru l-bayānātu ʾanna l-istihlāka nkhafaḍa khilāla r-rubʿi l-ʾakhīri, fa-qad ḥassanati l-muʾassasatu kafāʾata ʾajhizatihā, wa-ʾidhā stamarra hādhā l-ittijāhu fa-sa-tuḥaqqiqu hadafahā s-sanawiyya qabla l-mawʿid.
The data show that consumption fell during the last quarter: the organization has improved its equipment efficiency, and if this trend continues, it will meet its annual target early. (Academic.)
Common Mistakes
Copying an English comma instead of writing the linker
❌ وصلت الشحنة، بدأ الموظفون فحصها.
Incorrect as a tightly linked sequence—an Arabic comma does not itself mean ‘so/then.’
✅ وصلت الشحنة فبدأ الموظفون فحص محتوياتها.
waṣalati sh-shuḥnatu fa-badaʾa l-muwaẓẓafūna faḥṣa muḥtawayātihā.
The shipment arrived, so the employees began inspecting its contents.
Missing subjunctive mood after licensed causative فـ
❌ تعاونوا فتنجحون في إنهاء المهمة.
Incorrect for the intended command-and-result reading—the five-verb result must lose its mood nūn.
✅ تعاونوا فتنجحوا في إنهاء المهمة قبل المساء.
taʿāwanū fa-tanjaḥū fī ʾinhāʾi l-muhimmati qabla l-masāʾ.
Work together, and as a result you will finish the task before evening.
Merging light أنْ with heavy أنّ
❌ نريد فأن الخطة تبدأ اليوم.
Incorrect—فـ cannot turn heavy أنّ into the light أنْ required before a subjunctive verbal complement.
✅ اتفقنا على الخطة فنريد أن نبدأ تنفيذها اليوم.
ittafaqnā ʿalā l-khuṭṭati fa-nurīdu ʾan nabdaʾa tanfīdhahā l-yawm.
We agreed on the plan, so we want to begin implementing it today.
Omitting فـ before a conditional result that needs it
❌ إن تأخر الرد الخطة البديلة جاهزة.
Incorrect—the nominal answer to the condition requires linking فـ.
✅ إن تأخر الرد فالخطة البديلة جاهزة للتنفيذ.
ʾin taʾakhkhara r-raddu fa-l-khuṭṭatu l-badīlatu jāhizatun lit-tanfīdh.
If the reply is delayed, the alternative plan is ready for implementation.
Backshifting mechanically from English
❌ قال أمس إن الفريق كان سيصل غدا، والمقصود أنه سيصل بعد القول.
Misleading mechanical backshift—the intended future relative to yesterday's statement is expressed directly with سـ in its content clause.
✅ قال أمس إن الفريق سيصل غدا فسنستقبله في المحطة.
qāla ʾamsi ʾinna l-farīqa sayaṣilu ghadan fa-sa-nastaqbiluhu fī l-maḥaṭṭa(h).
He said yesterday that the team would arrive tomorrow, so we will meet it at the station.
Key Takeaways
- Attach فـ to what follows; it asserts a tight sequence, a consequence, or an explicitly linked response.
- Ordinary فـ governs neither case nor mood. Parse لن، لا، إنّ، أنْ and other following material separately.
- After a request or negation, causative فـ can introduce a subjunctive result; after a condition, response فـ links clause types that cannot serve as a bare jussive answer.
- Keep cause before result unless an explicit causal construction licenses another order, and use punctuation to clarify—not replace—the grammatical link.
