Delayed Sequence with ثمّ

ثمّ coordinates a second unit while presenting it as a distinct later stage. Its usual English translation is “then,” but the interval can be temporal, procedural, narrative, or rhetorical. The central contrast is with attached فـ: فـ makes the transition tight, whereas ثمّ gives the second step some distance and independent weight.

In formal contemporary Modern Standard Arabic, ثمّ is an independent word. It does not itself govern noun case or verb mood. Each coordinated noun retains the case required by its role, and each following verb retains the mood required inside its own clause.

The core particle ثمّ page gives a shorter introduction; this page develops clause order, rhetorical distance, and multi-particle sequences.

A later event rather than an immediate next event

The basic build-up is first clause + ثمّ + later clause:

أنهى الطبيب فحص المريض ثم كتب التقرير في المساء.

ʾanhā ṭ-ṭabību faḥṣa l-marīḍi thumma kataba t-taqrīra fī l-masāʾ.

The doctor finished examining the patient and later wrote the report in the evening. (Formal neutral.)

أنهى الطبيب فحص المريض is complete on its own. ثمّ adds كتب التقرير as the next distinct stage. The explicit في المساء makes the interval concrete, but ثمّ can signal separation even without a time phrase.

درست مريم الاقتصاد ثم انتقلت إلى العمل في الصحافة.

darasat maryamu l-iqtiṣāda thumma ntaqalat ʾilā l-ʿamali fī ṣ-ṣiḥāfa(h).

Maryam studied economics and later moved into journalism. (Formal biographical register.)

The subject can continue without being repeated, as in مريم ... انتقلت. If the subject changes, Arabic states it clearly:

غادر الوفد القاعة ثم بدأ المنظمون ترتيب المقاعد.

ghādara l-wafdu l-qāʿata thumma badaʾa l-munaẓẓimūna tartība l-maqāʿid.

The delegation left the hall, and then the organizers began arranging the seats. (The subject changes.)

ثمّ, فـ, and و make different commitments

Compare one pair of events under the three linkers:

استلمت هناء الرسالة وقرأت المرفقات.

istalamat hanāʾu r-risālata wa-qaraʾati l-murfaqāt.

Hanaa received the message and read the attachments. (Addition; order is not encoded by و alone.)

استلمت هناء الرسالة فقرأت المرفقات.

istalamat hanāʾu r-risālata fa-qaraʾati l-murfaqāt.

Hanaa received the message and promptly read the attachments. (Tight sequence.)

استلمت هناء الرسالة ثم قرأت المرفقات بعد الاجتماع.

istalamat hanāʾu r-risālata thumma qaraʾati l-murfaqāti baʿda l-ijtimāʿ.

Hanaa received the message and then read the attachments after the meeting. (Delayed stage.)

💡
ثمّ does not promise a long interval. It says that the speaker treats the second event as a separate stage. A few seconds can be enough if another action or phase is conceptually relevant.

Chronological coordination normally fixes clause order. If you reverse the clauses, you reverse the narrative sequence:

ناقشت اللجنة البدائل ثم اختارت الحل الأقل تكلفة.

nāqashati l-lajnatu l-badāʾila thumma khtārati l-ḥalla l-ʾaqalla taklifa(h).

The committee discussed the alternatives and then chose the least expensive solution.

اختارت اللجنة الحل ثم ناقشت البدائل is grammatical, but it tells the opposite sequence: choice first, discussion second. To mention a later event first without changing chronology, use an explicit frame such as “before that” rather than relying on ثمّ.

Procedures and stages

ثمّ is especially natural in instructions (formal) when one step must be completed before the next begins.

احفظ نسخة من الملف، ثم أغلق البرنامج وأعد تشغيل الجهاز.

iḥfaẓ nuskhatan mina l-malaffi, thumma ʾaghliqi l-barnāmaja wa-ʾaʿid tashghīla l-jihāz.

Save a copy of the file, then close the program and restart the device. (Formal instruction.)

The comma helps the reader see the boundary between longer commands; it does not create the sequence. Short coordination needs no comma: دخل ثم جلس “he entered, then sat down.”

يقيس الباحثون العينة أولا، ثم يسجلون النتائج في جدول موحد.

yaqīsu l-bāḥithūna l-ʿayyinata ʾawwalan, thumma yusajjilūna n-natāʾija fī jadwalin muwaḥḥad.

The researchers first measure the sample, then record the results in a standardized table. (Academic procedure.)

Both verbs are indicative because this is a factual procedural description. ثمّ does not change يسجلونَ.

Rhetorical distance: “moreover” and a stronger next point

In formal argument, ثمّ can order ideas rather than events. The second point is rhetorically separate or climactic. ثمّ إنّ often means “moreover” or “what is more”; the two particles remain separate, and إنّ governs its accusative noun.

لا يوضح المقترح مصدر التمويل، ثم إن جدوله الزمني غير واقعي.

lā yuwaḍḍiḥu l-muqtaraḥu maṣdara t-tamwīli, thumma ʾinna jadwalahu z-zamaniyya ghayru wāqiʿiyy.

The proposal does not explain the source of funding; moreover, its timetable is unrealistic. (Formal argumentative prose.)

أثبتت الدراسة انخفاض الانبعاثات، ثم بينت أن التحسن استمر بعد انتهاء التجربة.

ʾathbatati d-dirāsatu nkhifāḍa l-inbiʿāthāti, thumma bayyanat ʾanna t-taḥassuna stamarra baʿda ntihāʾi t-tajriba(h).

The study demonstrated a reduction in emissions and then showed that the improvement continued after the experiment ended. (Academic.)

This rhetorical use is still ordered: the writer asks the reader to process one finding and then advance to the next. It is not a generic filler at the beginning of any sentence.

Case and mood come from elsewhere

When ثمّ coordinates noun phrases, both phrases receive the case required by their shared role.

قابلت المحاسبة ثم مديرة الفرع.

qābaltu l-muḥāsibata thumma mudīrata l-farʿ.

I met the accountant and then the branch manager. (Both are accusative objects.)

When another particle follows ثمّ, that particle supplies the government:

سيعرض الخبراء النتائج ثم لن يعلنوا توصيتهم قبل التصويت.

sayaʿriḍu l-khubarāʾu n-natāʾija thumma lan yuʿlinū tawṣiyatahum qabla t-taṣwīt.

The experts will present the results, but then will not announce their recommendation before the vote. (Formal.)

Underlying يعلنونَ loses its mood nūn because of لن, not because of ثمّ. Likewise, ثمّ أنْ يراجعوا contains light أنْ governing يراجعوا, while ثمّ إنّ الخبراءَ contains heavy إنّ governing a noun.

💡
When particles cluster, parse them one by one. ثمّ orders; لن negates the future and governs the subjunctive; إنّ opens an emphatic nominal clause and governs its noun.

Tense and the formal paragraph

Arabic does not backshift automatically after a past reporting verb. A later stage can be future relative to that past report and remain marked with سـ or سوف.

أعلن الوزير أمس أن اللجنة ستراجع المشروع ثم ستنشر ملاحظاتها الأسبوع المقبل.

ʾaʿlana l-wazīru ʾamsi ʾanna l-lajnata sa-turājiʿu l-mashrūʿa thumma sa-tanshuru mulāḥaẓātihā l-ʾusbūʿa l-muqbil.

The minister announced yesterday that the committee would review the project and then publish its comments next week. (Formal news register.)

تبدأ الخطة بجمع البيانات من جميع المناطق، ثم يقارن الفريق النتائج بالمؤشرات السابقة، ثم تعرض الإدارة استنتاجاتها على المجلس كي يقرر الأعضاء الخطوة التالية.

tabdaʾu l-khuṭṭatu bi-jamʿi l-bayānāti min jamīʿi l-manāṭiqi, thumma yuqārinu l-farīqu n-natāʾija bil-muʾashshirāti s-sābiqati, thumma taʿriḍu l-ʾidāratu stintājātihā ʿalā l-majlisi kay yuqarrira l-ʾaʿḍāʾu l-khuṭwata t-tāliya(h).

The plan begins by collecting data from every region; the team then compares the results with earlier indicators, and the administration subsequently presents its conclusions to the council so that the members can decide the next step. (Academic/formal.)

Common Mistakes

Copying English “then” or a comma without testing the relation

❌ ضغطت زر الطوارئ، ثم توقف الجهاز فورا.

Poor linker choice—the explicit immediate result calls for فـ, not a separated later stage.

✅ ضغطت زر الطوارئ فتوقف الجهاز في الحال.

ḍaghaṭtu zirra ṭ-ṭawāriʾi fa-tawaqqafa l-jihāzu fī l-ḥāl.

I pressed the emergency button, so the device stopped at once.

Attributing a following mood to ثمّ

❌ سيشرح المدرب القاعدة ثم لن تطبقونها اليوم.

Incorrect—the five-verb form after لن must lose nūn; ثمّ does not block that government.

✅ سيشرح المدرب القاعدة ثم لن تطبقوها قبل التدريب.

sayashraḥu l-mudarribu l-qāʿidata thumma lan tuṭabbiqūhā qabla t-tadrīb.

The trainer will explain the rule; you will not apply it until after the practice session. (Addressing a masculine or mixed group.)

Merging أنْ and أنّ after ثمّ

❌ قررنا التريث ثم أن الخبير يراجع الوثائق.

Incorrect—the intended verbal complement requires light أنْ plus a subjunctive verb, not heavy أنّ before a bare verb.

✅ قررنا التريث ثم طلبنا أن يراجع الخبير الوثائق.

qarrarnā t-tarayyutha thumma ṭalabnā ʾan yurājiʿa l-khabīru l-wathāʾiq.

We decided to wait and then asked the expert to review the documents.

Using ثمّ where conditional response فـ is required

❌ إن انتهى المخزون ثم الطلبات الجديدة مؤجلة.

Incorrect—this is a nominal answer to a condition, so it requires response-linking فـ.

✅ إن انتهى المخزون فالطلبات الجديدة مؤجلة حتى الاثنين.

ʾini ntahā l-makhzūnu fa-ṭ-ṭalabātu l-jadīdatu muʾajjalatun ḥattā l-ithnayn.

If the stock runs out, new orders are postponed until Monday.

Backshifting the later event mechanically

❌ قالت ليلى إنها راجعت الملف ثم نشرت النتيجة غدا.

Incorrect tense logic if both stages were future from the time of speaking; Arabic does not use past forms merely because قالت is past.

✅ قالت ليلى إنها ستراجع الملف ثم ستنشر النتيجة غدا.

qālat laylā ʾinnahā sa-turājiʿu l-malaffa thumma sa-tanshuru n-natījata ghadan.

Layla said that she would review the file and then publish the result tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • ثمّ is a separate word that presents the following event or point as a distinct later stage.
  • Use فـ for a tight next step or consequence, و for addition without inherent order, and ثمّ for temporal or rhetorical distance.
  • ثمّ governs neither case nor mood; following لن، أنْ، إنّ and other particles retain their own government.
  • Clause order normally mirrors the asserted sequence, while punctuation only helps readers see longer boundaries.
