ثمّ means “then,” but its important contribution is not simply chronology. It coordinates a later event or point while presenting it as separate from the first by an interval, a stage, or rhetorical distance. It is an independent word, unlike prefixed فـ, and it does not itself change the case of a noun or the mood of a verb.
In (formal) contemporary MSA, ثمّ is common in narratives, procedures, histories, reports, and organized arguments. The delay it suggests may be literal time, but it may also be the conceptual space between two stages of reasoning.
Ordered sequence with an interval
The core pattern is first event + ثمّ + later event. The later event is ordered after the first, but the speaker does not package the transition as immediate.
تناولنا الغداء ثم عدنا إلى المكتب.
tanāwalnā l-ghadāʾa thumma ʿudnā ʾilā l-maktab.
We had lunch and then returned to the office. (Formal neutral.)
درست هدى الهندسة ثم عملت في مجال الطاقة.
darasat hudā l-handasata thumma ʿamilat fī majāli ṭ-ṭāqa.
Huda studied engineering and later worked in the energy sector. (Formal biographical style.)
The real-world interval can be obvious, as in years between study and employment, or left unspecified. What matters is that the second event is a distinct later stage.
The key contrast: فـ versus ثمّ
Compare the same two events with the two connectors:
سمع الموظف اسمه فدخل القاعة.
samiʿa l-muwaẓẓafu smahu fa-dakhala l-qāʿa.
The employee heard his name and immediately entered the hall. (Direct transition.)
سمع الموظف اسمه ثم دخل القاعة.
samiʿa l-muwaẓẓafu smahu thumma dakhala l-qāʿa.
The employee heard his name and then entered the hall. (Entry is presented as the next stage.)
The second sentence does not necessarily claim a long wait. ثمّ simply gives the entry more independence. By contrast, فـ says that no intervening stage is relevant; the فـ connector page explains that tighter link. Plain و “and” may coordinate the events without committing to their order at all.
Steps in instructions and procedures
In a procedure, ثمّ marks the next completed step. It is natural when each step has its own duration or must be completed before the next begins.
اغسل الأرز جيدا، ثم أضف الماء واتركه على نار هادئة.
ighsili l-ʾaruzza jayyidan, thumma ʾaḍifi l-māʾa wa-trukhu ʿalā nārin hādiʾa.
Wash the rice well, then add the water and leave it over low heat. (Formal instruction.)
سجل الدخول، ثم اختر الخدمة المطلوبة من القائمة.
sajjili d-dukhūla, thumma khtari l-khidmata l-maṭlūbata mina l-qāʾima.
Log in, then select the required service from the menu. (Formal interface instruction.)
The comma is useful between longer clauses, especially in a list of instructions. It is not required merely because ثمّ appears: دخل ثم جلس is perfectly punctuated as a short sentence. Arabic punctuation marks structure and readability; it does not create the temporal relation.
Ordering an account or an argument
ثمّ can move a text to a later topic, stage of evidence, or stronger point. This is discourse ordering rather than literal clock time. The writer asks the reader to process one point and then advance to another.
يعرض التقرير حجم المشكلة، ثم يناقش الخيارات المتاحة لمعالجتها.
yaʿriḍu t-taqrīru ḥajma l-mushkilati, thumma yunāqishu l-khiyārāti l-mutāḥata limuʿālajatihā.
The report presents the scale of the problem and then discusses the available options for addressing it. (Formal.)
لم تفشل الخطة ماليا فحسب، ثم إن أثرها الاجتماعي كان محدودا.
lam tafshali l-khuṭṭatu māliyyan fa-ḥasbu, thumma ʾinna ʾatharahā l-ijtimāʿiyya kāna maḥdūdan.
The plan did not merely fail financially; moreover, its social impact was limited. (Formal argumentative prose.)
In the second example, ثمّ إنّ can be translated “moreover” or “and what is more.” There is no temporal delay between facts. The rhetorical effect is to add a second, separately weighted consideration. Write the two particles separately: ثمّ إنّ, never as one word.
Starting a new sentence with ثمّ is possible when the new sentence genuinely advances the ordered account. It should not be sprinkled into prose as a generic filler equivalent to every English sentence-initial “then.”
Coordinating nouns and phrases
ثمّ can coordinate noun phrases as well as clauses. The coordinated phrase receives whatever case its position requires; ثمّ does not assign that case.
قابلت المدير ثم نائبه.
qābaltu l-mudīra thumma nāʾibahu.
I met the director and then his deputy. (Both objects are accusative.)
وصل المدير ثم نائبه.
waṣala l-mudīru thumma nāʾibuhu.
The director arrived, followed later by his deputy. (Both subjects are nominative.)
This pair makes government visible. نائبه is accusative after transitive قابلت and nominative as the subject of وصل. The connector is unchanged in both sentences.
The same principle applies to verbs. An indicative verb remains indicative after ثمّ unless another particle governs it. In ثمّ لن نتأخرَ, لن makes the verb subjunctive; in ثمّ لا تتأخرْ, prohibitive لا makes it jussive.
سنراجع العقد ثم لن نوقعه قبل تعديل البند الأخير.
sa-nurājiʿu l-ʿaqda thumma lan nuwaqqiʿahu qabla taʿdīli l-bandi l-ʾakhīr.
We will review the contract, and then we will not sign it before the final clause is amended. (Formal.)
Position, attachment, and scope
Unlike فـ and و, ثمّ is a separate orthographic word: ثم دخل، ثم القرار، ثم لا. A preceding prefixed conjunction can attach to it, producing وثمّ “and then,” but ثمّ still remains the recognizable base.
Its scope is normally the whole following coordinated unit. Compare a clause and a phrase:
زار الوفد المصنع، ثم اجتمع بالعمال.
zāra l-wafdu l-maṣnaʿa, thumma jtamaʿa bil-ʿummāl.
The delegation visited the factory and then met with the workers. (ثمّ scopes over a clause.)
زار الوفد المصنع ثم المستودع.
zāra l-wafdu l-maṣnaʿa thumma l-mustawdaʿ.
The delegation visited the factory and then the warehouse. (ثمّ scopes over a noun phrase.)
The shape of what follows tells you the scope. In a cluster such as ثم لا يعود “then he does not return,” do not treat لا as part of ثمّ: ثمّ orders the clause; لا negates the verb.
Register and translation choices
ثمّ is neutral in formal speech and writing. Regional spoken varieties often use other everyday connectors, so a learner may hear dialectal forms more frequently in casual conversation. Those do not make ثمّ archaic; it remains ordinary MSA in presentations, instructions, stories, and broadcasts.
English “then” can mean “in that case”: “If that is true, then we must act.” Arabic may use conditional-response فـ, not ثمّ, because the relation is consequence rather than a later narrative stage. English “then” can also be a conversational filler; Arabic does not automatically reproduce it.
Common Mistakes
Attaching ثمّ to the following word
❌ أنهينا الاجتماع ثمانصرفنا.
Incorrect—ثمّ is an independent word and must not be joined to انصرفنا.
✅ أنهينا الاجتماع ثم انصرفنا.
ʾanhaynā l-ijtimāʿa thumma nṣarafnā.
We ended the meeting and then left.
Using ثمّ for an immediate consequence
❌ ضغطت زر الإيقاف ثم توقف الجهاز فورا.
Poor connector choice—the explicit فورا presents the stopping as an immediate result.
✅ ضغطت زر الإيقاف فتوقف الجهاز فورا.
ḍaghaṭtu zirra l-ʾīqāfi fa-tawaqqafa l-jihāzu fawran.
I pressed the stop button, so the device stopped immediately.
Treating ثمّ as a case governor
❌ قابلت المدير ثم نائبه مرفوع لأن ثم تسبقه.
Incorrect analysis—the coordinated noun is an object and must match the accusative case of المديرَ.
✅ قابلت المدير ثم نائبه.
qābaltu l-mudīra thumma nāʾibahu.
I met the director and then his deputy.
Merging a chain of particles
❌ ثمإن الخطة جاهزة.
Incorrect spelling—ثمّ and إنّ remain separate words, and إنّ retains its own case-governing function.
✅ ثم إن الخطة جاهزة.
thumma ʾinna l-khuṭṭata jāhiza.
Moreover, the plan is ready.
Key Takeaways
- Write ثمّ as a separate word.
- It orders a distinct later event, stage, or argumentative point; the interval can be temporal or rhetorical.
- Contrast ثمّ with tightly sequenced/resultative فـ and order-neutral و.
- ثمّ governs neither noun case nor verb mood. A following إنّ، لن، ما، or لا keeps its own function.
