Arabic does not have one interchangeable equivalent of English because. لأنّ introduces a proposition as the reason, بما أنّ presents that proposition as an already available premise, causal إذ adds an explanatory fact, and بسبب makes a noun phrase—not a finite clause—the cause. The choice therefore controls both grammar and discourse: what kind of constituent follows, what morphology appears inside it, and whether the reason sounds newly asserted or presupposed.
The case frame inside heavy أنّ is developed on أنّ + content clauses; here the focus is what each cause expression contributes to the relation between clauses.
These linkers do not normally impose a same-subject requirement. In تأخرنا لأن الطريق كان مغلقا, “we” are delayed but “the road” is closed. What matters is that each finite clause has its own well-formed subject and predicate.
Build the reason onto a complete assertion
Start with the consequence and the independent fact that explains it:
تأخرنا عن الموعد. كان الطريق مغلقا بسبب أعمال الصيانة.
taʾakhkharnā ʿani l-mawʿid. kāna ṭ-ṭarīqu mughlaqan bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).
We were late for the appointment. The road was closed for maintenance.
Heavy أنّ turns the second proposition into the reason selected by لـ. Its noun becomes accusative: لأنّ الطريقَ. The predicate كان مغلقا keeps its own verbal and case structure.
تأخرنا عن الموعد لأن الطريق كان مغلقا بسبب أعمال الصيانة.
taʾakhkharnā ʿani l-mawʿidi liʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa kāna mughlaqan bisababi ʾaʿmāli ṣ-ṣiyāna(h).
We were late for the appointment because the road was closed for maintenance. (Formal neutral.)
English because merely marks a relation. Arabic لأنّ also opens a nominal clause: its noun is accusative, while a one-word predicate would be nominative. A verbal predicate is not made subjunctive by لأنّ.
لن نرسل التقرير اليوم لأن المحللين لم ينتهوا من مراجعة الأرقام.
lan nursila t-taqrīra l-yawma liʾanna l-muḥallilīna lam yantahū min murājaʿati l-ʾarqām.
We will not send the report today because the analysts have not finished reviewing the figures. (Formal.)
Here المحللين is accusative after أنّ. The five-verb form ينتهوا loses its nūn because لم governs the jussive—not because the clause is causal. Without لم, the indicative would retain nūn: لأن المحللين ينتهون اليوم.
لأنّ: an asserted explanatory proposition
Use لأنّ when a full proposition supplies the reason. It is neutral in contemporary formal speech and writing. The cause commonly follows the consequence because the listener first receives the claim and then its explanation.
أجلنا الاجتماع لأن المديرة ستشارك في جلسة طارئة.
ʾajjalnā l-ijtimāʿa liʾanna l-mudīrata satushāriku fī jalsatin ṭāriʾa(h).
We postponed the meeting because the director will take part in an emergency session.
The future prefix in ستشارك belongs to the predicate. Arabic does not mechanically backshift it because أجلنا is past: the emergency session can still be future at the time of speaking.
A reason can precede, especially when it frames everything that follows. Initial ولأنّ is often more cohesive than bare لأنّ in polished prose because و connects the explanation to its discourse context.
ولأن الموعد النهائي اقترب، تعمل الفرق مساء أيضا.
wa-liʾanna l-mawʿida n-nihāʾiyya qtaraba, taʿmalu l-firaqu masāʾan ʾayḍan.
And because the final deadline is approaching, the teams are also working in the evening. (Formal.)
The comma is useful after this preposed frame. It does not license the relation; ولأنّ does.
بما أنّ: a reason treated as given
بما أنّ is close to “since,” “given that,” or “inasmuch as.” It presents the following proposition as shared, observable, or already established and uses it as the basis for the main assertion. It is especially natural clause-initially in reasoned formal prose.
بما أن الجسر مغلق، غيرت الحافلات مسارها حتى نهاية الأسبوع.
bimā ʾanna l-jisra mughlaqun, ghayyarati l-ḥāfilātu masārahā ḥattā nihāyati l-ʾusbūʿ.
Since the bridge is closed, the buses have changed their route until the end of the week. (The closure is treated as known.)
Heavy أنّ again assigns accusative to الجسرَ; the one-word predicate مغلقٌ is nominative. The construction does not express purpose and does not govern a subjunctive imperfect.
سنستخدم القاعة الصغيرة، بما أن عدد المشاركين لا يتجاوز ثلاثين.
sanastakhdimu l-qāʿata ṣ-ṣaghīrata, bimā ʾanna ʿadada l-mushārikīna lā yatajāwazu thalāthīn.
We will use the small hall, given that the number of participants does not exceed thirty. (Formal explanation.)
In this order, the بما أنّ clause sounds like a supporting consideration added after the decision. There is no absolute semantic wall between لأنّ and بما أنّ, but the latter more strongly signals “accept this premise, then follow the inference.”
Causal إذ: an explanatory fact
إذ can mean “since/as” when it appends an explanatory circumstance. This use is (formal/literary) and common in edited argument, reports, and elevated narration. It is also a temporal word in other contexts, so readers infer the causal value from the explanatory relation.
أعدنا الاختبار، إذ ظهرت فروق غير متوقعة بين العينات.
ʾaʿadnā l-ikhtibāra, ʾidh ẓaharat furūqun ghayru mutawaqqaʿatin bayna l-ʿayyināt.
We repeated the test, since unexpected differences appeared among the samples. (Formal explanatory إذ.)
إذ does not assign accusative like أنّ and does not govern verbal mood. Here ظهرت is a perfect verb because the differences appeared before the repeat. An imperfect remains indicative when the explanation is ongoing.
يستحسن تأجيل الإطلاق، إذ يحتاج الفريق إلى يومين إضافيين للاختبار.
yustaḥsanu taʾjīlu l-ʾiṭlāqi, ʾidh yaḥtāju l-farīqu ʾilā yawmayni ʾiḍāfiyyayni lil-ikhtibār.
It would be advisable to postpone the launch, since the team needs two additional days for testing. (Formal recommendation.)
In ordinary conversation, لأنّ is usually the safer neutral choice. Do not insert إذ everywhere English permits as: English as also expresses time and manner.
بسبب: package the cause as a noun
بسبب means “because of / due to.” Grammatically it is بـ + سبب, followed by a genitive noun or an iḍāfa chain. It does not directly introduce an ordinary finite clause.
أغلقت المدرسة أبوابها بسبب انقطاع الكهرباء.
ʾaghlaqati l-madrasatu ʾabwābahā bisababi nqiṭāʿi l-kahrabāʾ.
The school closed its doors because of the power outage.
تأخر الرد بسبب حاجة اللجنة إلى وثائق إضافية.
taʾakhkhara r-raddu bisababi ḥājati l-lajnati ʾilā wathāʾiqa ʾiḍāfiyya(h).
The response was delayed because the committee needed additional documents. (Literally, because of the committee's need.)
The verbal noun حاجة compresses a proposition into a nominal cause. This can sound concise and administrative, but it may hide tense and agency. If those matter, use لأنّ اللجنة تحتاج.
| Linker | What follows | Local morphology | Typical discourse value |
|---|---|---|---|
| لأنّ | nominal proposition | noun of أنّ accusative | asserted explanation |
| بما أنّ | nominal proposition | noun of أنّ accusative | given premise |
| إذ | finite or nominal clause | no mood or case government of its own | explanatory circumstance |
| بسبب | noun / verbal noun | genitive complement | cause packaged as an entity |
A formal paragraph
بما أن نتائج المرحلة الأولى لم تكن حاسمة، قررت اللجنة تمديد الدراسة ثلاثة أشهر؛ إذ تحتاج الفرق إلى جمع بيانات من مناطق إضافية، ولن تنشر النتائج الأولية لأن نشرها الآن قد يؤدي إلى استنتاجات مضللة.
bimā ʾanna natāʾija l-marḥalati l-ʾūlā lam takun ḥāsimatan, qarrarati l-lajnatu tamdīda d-dirāsati thalāthata ʾashhurin; ʾidh taḥtāju l-firaqu ʾilā jamʿi bayānātin min manāṭiqa ʾiḍāfiyyatin, wa-lan tanshura n-natāʾija l-ʾawwaliyyata liʾanna nashrahā l-ʾāna qad yuʾaddī ʾilā stintājātin muḍallila(h).
Given that the first phase's results were inconclusive, the committee decided to extend the study by three months; the teams need to collect data from additional regions, and they will not publish the preliminary results because publishing them now could lead to misleading conclusions. (Formal academic prose.)
The initial premise scopes over the decision. إذ elaborates that decision, while the final لأنّ gives the specific reason for withholding publication. The semicolon and comma make the levels visible; they do not replace any linker.
Common Mistakes
Joining two sentences with an English comma
❌ ارتفعت تكاليف المواد، ألغينا المرحلة الأخيرة.
Incorrect—an Arabic comma alone does not express 'because' or repair a comma splice.
✅ ألغينا المرحلة الأخيرة لأن تكاليف المواد ارتفعت كثيرا.
ʾalghaynā l-marḥalata l-ʾakhīrata liʾanna takālīfa l-mawāddi rtafaʿat kathīran.
We canceled the final phase because material costs rose sharply.
Letting لأنّ govern verbal mood
❌ لم نرسل التقرير لأن المحللين لم ينتهون من المراجعة.
Incorrect—لم, not لأنّ, governs the embedded verb and requires jussive ينتهوا without nūn.
✅ لم نرسل التقرير لأن المحللين لم ينتهوا من المراجعة بعد.
lam nursili t-taqrīra liʾanna l-muḥallilīna lam yantahū mina l-murājaʿati baʿd.
We did not send the report because the analysts had not yet finished the review.
Merging light أنْ and heavy أنّ
❌ ألغينا الرحلة لأن الطقس يسوء.
ʾalghaynā r-riḥlata liʾan aṭ-ṭaqsu yasūʾa
Incorrect reading—this reason requires heavy أنّ, accusative الطقسَ, and an indicative predicate.
✅ ألغينا الرحلة لأن الطقس يسوء بسرعة.
ʾalghaynā r-riḥlata liʾanna ṭ-ṭaqsa yasūʾu bisurʿa(h).
We canceled the trip because the weather is deteriorating rapidly.
Putting a finite clause directly after بسبب
❌ تأخرنا بسبب الطريق كان مزدحما.
Incorrect—بسبب selects a nominal complement, not this finite clause.
✅ تأخرنا بسبب ازدحام الطريق عند المدخل الشمالي.
taʾakhkharnā bisababi zdihāmi ṭ-ṭarīqi ʿinda l-madkhali sh-shamāliyy.
We were delayed because of traffic congestion at the north entrance.
Backshifting mechanically from English
❌ أوقفت الهيئة المنتج لأن استعماله كان غير آمن الآن.
Incorrect for a danger that still exists now—the past كان falsely limits the unsafety to an earlier time.
✅ أوقفت الهيئة المنتج لأن استعماله غير آمن حتى الآن.
ʾawqafati l-hayʾatu l-muntaja liʾanna stiʿmālahu ghayru ʾāminin ḥattā l-ʾān.
The authority withdrew the product because its use remains unsafe.
Omitting result فـ after a condition
❌ إن كان التأخير بسبب عطل تقني سنمدد المهلة.
Incorrect in careful formal prose—the future result of this إن-condition should be introduced by فـ.
✅ إن كان التأخير بسبب عطل تقني، فسنمدد المهلة يومين.
ʾin kāna t-taʾkhīru bisababi ʿuṭlin tiqniyyin, fa-sanumaddidu l-muhlata yawmayn.
If the delay is due to a technical fault, we will extend the deadline by two days.
Key Takeaways
- لأنّ and بما أنّ contain heavy أنّ: their noun is accusative, but an internal verb gets its mood from its own governor.
- إذ adds an explanatory clause without governing case or mood and is more formal or literary than neutral لأنّ.
- بسبب takes a genitive nominal cause; a verbal noun can compress a fuller proposition.
- Clause order manages information: postposed causes explain a claim, while preposed causes frame the claim as a conclusion.
- Translate the real timeline, not English sequence-of-tense habits.
