أنّ + Nominalized Content Clauses

Heavy أنّ turns a complete nominal proposition into a unit that can serve as the content of a verb, noun, adjective, or preposition. In أدركت أنّ الموعدَ قريبٌ “I realized that the appointment is near,” the embedded proposition is الموعد قريب; أنّ makes الموعد accusative while its one-word predicate remains nominative.

English that does not change the form of the subject, and it can often be omitted. Arabic أنّ cannot simply disappear from this construction: it identifies the clause as embedded and establishes its internal case frame. This page uses أنّ for content treated as a proposition or fact; light أنْ before a subjunctive event belongs to أنْ + subjunctive clauses.

From an independent statement to embedded content

Begin with the independent nominal sentence النتيجة واضحة. Both the subject and one-word predicate are nominative in a fully inflected reading:

النتيجة واضحة

an-natījatu wāḍiḥatun

The result is clear.

After a verb such as أثبت “demonstrate,” the same proposition becomes its content complement. Heavy أنّ assigns accusative to النتيجةَ, while واضحةٌ remains nominative:

أثبت التحليل أن النتيجة واضحة

ʾathbata t-taḥlīlu ʾanna n-natījata wāḍiḥatun

The analysis demonstrated that the result is clear. (Formal.)

The whole sequence أنّ النتيجة واضحة occupies the object-like content slot of أثبت. Internally, however, it remains a nominal clause with اسم أنّ and خبر أنّ. A verbal clause can fill its predicate position:

لاحظنا أن الموظفين ينهون العمل في موعده

lāḥaẓnā ʾanna l-muwaẓẓafīna yunhūna l-ʿamala fī mawʿidihi

We noticed that the employees finish the work on time.

Here sound masculine plural الموظفينَ is accusative. The predicate verb ينهونَ is indicative and retains its mood nūn; أنّ governs its noun's case, not the mood of a verb inside the predicate.

💡
Parse two levels separately: the larger verb selects an entire content clause, while أنّ assigns accusative to its own noun inside that clause. It does not make every following word accusative.

What can occupy the noun and predicate slots

The noun of أنّ may be an ordinary noun phrase, a demonstrative phrase, an attached pronoun, or a longer constituent. The predicate may be a nominative word, a prepositional phrase, or a complete clause.

عرفت أن هذه النسخة هي الأحدث

ʿaraftu ʾanna hādhihi n-nuskhata hiya l-ʾaḥdathu

I learned that this version is the newest.

The indeclinable demonstrative هذه does not visibly change, but its dependent noun النسخةَ reveals the accusative slot. In the next example, attached ـه itself is اسم أنّ:

تبين لنا أنه لا خطر على السكان

tabayyana lanā ʾannahu lā khaṭara ʿalā s-sukkān

It became clear to us that there was no danger to the residents. (Formal.)

There is no rule that the embedded and matrix clauses must have the same subject. Compare أدركتُ أنّني... with أدركتُ أنّ الفريق...: both are possible. Attached pronouns are often natural when the subject is coreferential, but reference—not an English infinitive rule—determines the choice.

أقر المدير بأنه أخطأ في تقدير المدة

ʾaqarra l-mudīru bi-ʾannahu ʾakhṭaʾa fī taqdīri l-mudda(h)

The director acknowledged that he had misjudged the duration.

After prepositions and prepositional expressions

Because the أنّ clause behaves as a nominalized unit externally, a preposition can govern it. Common written combinations include بأنّ “that / to the effect that,” لأنّ “because,” and مع أنّ “although / despite the fact that.” The preposition does not alter the internal accusative-plus-predicate pattern.

أبلغتنا الشركة بأن الشحنة ستصل غدا

ʾablaghatnā sh-sharikatu bi-ʾanna sh-shiḥnata sataṣilu ghadan

The company informed us that the shipment will arrive tomorrow. (Formal business register.)

مع أن الطريق طويل، وصلنا قبل الغروب

maʿa ʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa ṭawīlun, waṣalnā qabla l-ghurūb

Although the road is long, we arrived before sunset.

The second example also shows possible clause order: the concessive مع أنّ clause may precede the main assertion. Reversing the order changes information flow, not case government:

وصلنا قبل الغروب، مع أن الطريق طويل

waṣalnā qabla l-ghurūbi, maʿa ʾanna ṭ-ṭarīqa ṭawīl

We arrived before sunset, although the road is long.

The preposed order sets up an apparent obstacle; the final order adds it as a qualification. Arabic punctuation helps readers see the boundary, but a comma does not replace the linker.

أنّ versus إنّ and أنْ

أنّ and إنّ have the same internal case pattern, yet different external jobs. إنّ normally anchors an independent or report-like clause. أنّ integrates a proposition into a larger syntactic structure.

إن البيانات مكتملة، وقد بدأت المراجعة

ʾinna l-bayānāti muktamilatun, wa-qad badaʾati l-murājaʿa(h)

The data are complete, and the review has begun. (Main-clause إنّ.)

أكدت اللجنة أن البيانات مكتملة وأن المراجعة قد بدأت

ʾakkadati l-lajnatu ʾanna l-bayānāti muktamilatun wa-ʾanna l-murājaʿata qad badaʾat

The committee confirmed that the data were complete and that the review had begun.

By contrast, light أنْ introduces an imperfect event and governs subjunctive mood: نأمل أن تصلَ “we hope it will arrive.” Heavy أنّ can have a verbal-clause predicate, but that predicate keeps the mood required by its own context: نعرف أنّها تصلُ مبكرا “we know that it arrives early.”

💡
Do not choose by translating English that. Choose أنّ for an embedded proposition with a nominal subject–predicate frame, إنّ for a main or report-like assertion, and أنْ before a subjunctive imperfect event.

Time reference without mechanical backshift

Arabic does not require the English sequence-of-tense shift is → was merely because the higher reporting verb is past. The embedded verb or nominal predicate is chosen for its actual time relative to the speech situation and the report.

أوضحت الوزارة أن النظام يسري من أول يناير

ʾawḍaḥati l-wizāratu ʾanna n-niẓāma yasrī min ʾawwali yanāyir

The ministry explained that the regulation takes effect from the first of January. (The present remains present.)

أثبت التحقيق أن الخلل بدأ قبل التحديث واستمر بعده، وأن الشركة تتخذ الآن إجراءات جديدة لمنع تكراره

ʾathbata t-taḥqīqu ʾanna l-khalala badaʾa qabla t-taḥdīthi wa-stamarra baʿdahu, wa-ʾanna sh-sharikata tattakhidhu l-ʾāna ʾijrāʾātin jadīdatan li-manʿi takrārihi

The investigation established that the defect began before the update and continued afterward, and that the company is now taking new measures to prevent its recurrence. (Formal report.)

The past verbs locate the defect historically; تتخذ الآن remains present because الآن locates it at the current moment. Translate the resulting English naturally, but do not manufacture an Arabic backshift.

Common Mistakes

Leaving اسم أنّ nominative

❌ أثبت الفحص أن الجهاز سليم

ʾathbata l-faḥṣu ʾanna l-jihāzu salīmun

Incorrect reading — الجهاز is اسم أنّ and must be accusative: al-jihāza.

✅ أثبت الفحص أن الجهاز سليم تماما

ʾathbata l-faḥṣu ʾanna l-jihāza salīmun tamāman

The inspection proved that the device is completely sound.

Using أنْ where a nominal proposition is intended

❌ أدركنا أن المشكلة خطيرة

ʾadraknā ʾani l-mushkilatu khaṭīratun

Incorrect reading — a noun follows, so this must be heavy أنّ with accusative المشكلةَ.

✅ أدركنا أن المشكلة أخطر مما توقعنا

ʾadraknā ʾanna l-mushkilata ʾakhṭaru mimmā tawaqqaʿnā

We realized that the problem was more serious than we had expected.

Changing an indicative predicate into a subjunctive

❌ نعلم أن الباحثين يراجعوا النتائج

Incorrect — heavy أنّ does not delete the mood nūn from its indicative verbal predicate.

✅ نعلم أن الباحثين يراجعون النتائج بعناية

naʿlamu ʾanna l-bāḥithīna yurājiʿūna n-natāʾija bi-ʿināya(h)

We know that the researchers are reviewing the results carefully.

Copying English backshift into Arabic

❌ قالت الطبيبة إن الدواء كان آمنا الآن

Incorrect for a medicine that is still safe now — past كان creates an unnecessary past-time claim.

✅ أكدت الطبيبة أن الدواء آمن عند استعماله كما وصف

ʾakkadati ṭ-ṭabībatu ʾanna d-dawāʾa ʾāminun ʿinda stiʿmālihi kamā wuṣif

The doctor confirmed that the medicine is safe when used as prescribed.

Treating أنّ as conditional إنْ and omitting the result marker

❌ أن تأخر الرد سنغلق الطلب

Incorrect — heavy أنّ cannot introduce ‘if’; this requires conditional إذا, followed here by a result clause with فـ.

✅ إذا تأخر الرد، فسنغلق الطلب نهاية الأسبوع

ʾidhā taʾakhkhara r-raddu, fa-sanughliqu ṭ-ṭalaba nihāyata l-ʾusbūʿ

If the response is delayed, we will close the request at the end of the week.

Key Takeaways

  • أنّ embeds a proposition; its noun is accusative and a one-word predicate is nominative.
  • A verbal predicate after أنّ is not automatically subjunctive. Its own governor determines its mood.
  • Prepositions can govern the clause as a whole in combinations such as بأنّ، لأنّ، مع أنّ.
  • أنّ has no same-subject restriction, and an attached pronoun can fill its noun slot.
  • Arabic time reference follows the intended timeline, not automatic English backshift.
