Light أنْ turns an imperfect verbal clause into an event-like unit that can serve as a complement, subject, or prepositional dependent. It also governs the imperfect subjunctive: أريد أن أبدأَ “I want to begin.” Unlike English to + infinitive, the Arabic verb remains finite and can identify who acts through person, gender, and number.
Ordinary unvocalized writing does not show the sukūn of light أنْ or the shadda of heavy أنّ. The distinction is structural. Light أنْ selects a subjunctive verbal clause; heavy أنّ opens a nominal content clause and governs an accusative noun.
For a focused paradigm of the endings, see أنْ with a subjunctive complement; this page concentrates on how the whole embedded clause functions.
Build the matrix clause, then the event complement
Start with a complete main predicate such as قرر الفريق “the team decided.” Then add the event decided upon: أن يؤجل الاجتماع “that it postpone / to postpone the meeting.”
قرر الفريق أن يؤجل الاجتماع إلى صباح الأحد.
qarrara l-farīqu ʾan yuʾajjila l-ijtimāʿa ʾilā ṣabāḥi l-ʾaḥad.
The team decided to postpone the meeting until Sunday morning. (Formal neutral.)
The subjunctive يؤجلَ has an understood subject coreferential with الفريق. English uses an infinitive with no visible subject; Arabic uses a finite third-person masculine-singular verb.
نأمل أن تنتهي المفاوضات قبل نهاية الشهر.
naʾmulu ʾan tantahiya l-mufāwaḍātu qabla nihāyati sh-shahr.
We hope that the negotiations will end before the end of the month. (Formal.)
Here the embedded subject is overt and different: المفاوضات. As a nonhuman plural, it triggers feminine-singular agreement, so the verb is تنتهيَ; verb-first order is fully compatible with that agreement. Its final ي remains in the subjunctive.
Common matrix predicates include verbs of wanting, deciding, trying, allowing, asking, expecting, and fearing, as well as impersonal evaluations such as من الضروري أن “it is necessary that” and من الأفضل أن “it is better to/that.” The exact subject relation comes from each predicate and the context; أنْ itself does not decide who performs the embedded action.
Same subject and different subject
With verbs such as حاول، قرر، نوى, the understood subject of the complement is normally the main-clause subject.
تحاول الباحثتان أن تعيدا التجربة في ظروف مختلفة.
tuḥāwilu l-bāḥithatāni ʾan tuʿīdā t-tajribata fī ẓurūfin mukhtalifa(h).
The two researchers are trying to repeat the experiment under different conditions. (Formal; same embedded subject.)
Underlying dual تعيدانِ loses mood nūn after أنْ, giving تعيدا. The alif remains to mark the dual.
With request, permission, and desire predicates, a separate phrase often identifies a different embedded actor:
طلبت المديرة من المحاسبين أن يراجعوا الفواتير القديمة.
ṭalabati l-mudīratu mina l-muḥāsibīna ʾan yurājiʿū l-fawātīra l-qadīma(h).
The director asked the accountants to review the old invoices. (Formal; different embedded subject.)
يراجعوا agrees with the understood masculine-plural accountants and loses its mood nūn. If the subject follows the verb overtly in neutral VSO, the verb is singular:
تطلب الإدارة أن يراجع الخبراء إجراءات السلامة الجديدة.
taṭlubu l-ʾidāratu ʾan yurājiʿa l-khubarāʾu ʾijrāʾāti s-salāmati l-jadīda(h).
The administration requests that the experts review the new safety procedures. (Verb-first embedded clause.)
Subject-first order instead has full agreement: تريد الإدارة من الخبراء أن يراجعوا الإجراءات. This is ordinary Arabic agreement syntax inside the complement, not a special rule of أنْ.
What the subjunctive looks like
Light أنْ governs mood in predictable ways, but the visible signal depends on the verb class.
| Verb type | Indicative | After أنْ | Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| sound singular | يكتبُ | أن يكتبَ | final -a |
mina l-ʾafḍali ʾan tadʿuwa l-lajnatu khabīran mustaqillan.
It would be better for the committee to invite an independent expert. (Formal recommendation; final-weak subjunctive.)
Subjunctive تدعوَ retains و and pronounces -uwa. Jussive لم تدعُ deletes the weak letter, so copying jussive deletion here would be wrong.
يشترط النظام أن ترسلن الطلبات قبل الخميس.
yashtariṭu n-niẓāmu ʾan tursilna ṭ-ṭalabāti qabla l-khamīs.
The system requires you women to send the applications before Thursday. (Formal; feminine-plural agreement nūn remains.)
Relative time, not an Arabic infinitive tense
The imperfect after أنْ does not by itself mean present or future. Its time is interpreted relative to the main predicate, aspect, and adverbials.
كان سامر يريد أن يسافر في اليوم التالي.
kāna sāmirun yurīdu ʾan yusāfira fī l-yawmi t-tālī.
Samer wanted to travel the following day. (The planned travel was later than a past desire.)
يسرني أن أعمل مع هذا الفريق في المرحلة الحالية.
yasurrunī ʾan ʾaʿmala maʿa hādhā l-farīqi fī l-marḥalati l-ḥāliyya(h).
I am pleased to work with this team during the current phase. (The work is concurrent with the evaluation.)
English sequence-of-tense rules often backshift after a past verb. Arabic does not mechanically replace the embedded imperfect with a past form. Conversely, when a speaker asserts a completed fact rather than envisaging an event, heavy أنّ plus a suitable predicate is often the correct architecture: عرفت أنّ الفريق وصل “I learned that the team had arrived.”
Purpose-like and prepositional frames
Light أنْ also appears after prepositions and complex linkers. These frames add a relation such as purpose, time, substitution, or avoidance while أنْ continues to govern the subjunctive.
اجتمع الفريق مبكرا من أجل أن ينتهي من المراجعة قبل الظهر.
ijtamaʿa l-farīqu mubakkiran min ʾajli ʾan yantahiya mina l-murājaʿati qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
The team met early in order to finish the review before noon. (Formal purpose.)
تحقق من العنوان قبل أن ترسل الرسالة.
taḥaqqaq mina l-ʿunwāni qabla ʾan tursila r-risāla(h).
Check the address before you send the message. (Formal instruction; temporal frame.)
غادر الموظف من دون أن يوقع سجل الحضور.
ghādara l-muwaẓẓafu min dūni ʾan yuwaqqiʿa sijilla l-ḥuḍūr.
The employee left without signing the attendance register. (Formal neutral.)
English often compresses these relations into before sending or without signing. Arabic أنْ retains a finite verb, so it can change the subject explicitly: قبل أن يرسل المدير الرسالة “before the director sends the message.”
An أنْ clause can occupy a subject-like position
The whole clause can function like a noun phrase. Formal Arabic often places an evaluation first and the clause afterward because this order is easier to process.
من الضروري أن يلتزم الجميع بالموعد النهائي.
mina ḍ-ḍarūriyyi ʾan yaltazima l-jamīʿu bil-mawʿidi n-nihāʾiyy.
It is necessary for everyone to meet the final deadline. (Formal.)
Fronting the clause is possible when it is the topic or subject under discussion (formal/academic):
أن يلتزم الجميع بمعيار واحد أمر ضروري للمقارنة.
ʾan yaltazima l-jamīʿu bi-miʿyārin wāḥidin ʾamrun ḍarūriyyun lil-muqārana(h).
For everyone to follow one standard is essential for comparison. (Formal/academic; fronted clause.)
This reversed order is grammatical but heavier. English uses a visible for ... to subject; Arabic lets the finite أنْ clause itself fill that role.
Light أنْ versus heavy أنّ
The two structures can express related meanings, but they package different things:
أتوقع أن يصل المدير قبل الظهر.
ʾatawaqqaʿu ʾan yaṣila l-mudīru qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
I expect the director to arrive before noon. (Light أنْ: envisaged event.)
أعرف أن المدير يصل عادة قبل الظهر.
ʾaʿrifu ʾanna l-mudīra yaṣilu ʿādatan qabla ẓ-ẓuhr.
I know that the director usually arrives before noon. (Heavy أنّ: proposition treated as known.)
Heavy أنّ makes المديرَ accusative, while its predicate verb يصلُ is indicative. Light أنْ directly governs subjunctive يصلَ, whose following subject remains nominative.
The maṣdar alternative
Because an أنْ clause has nominal distribution, formal prose can often replace it with a verbal noun. The shorter alternative may be elegant, but it can hide the actor, voice, polarity, and relative time.
ناقشت اللجنة إمكان توسيع البرنامج العام المقبل.
nāqashati l-lajnatu ʾimkāna tawsīʿi l-barnāmaji l-ʿāma l-muqbil.
The committee discussed the possibility of expanding the program next year. (Compact formal maṣdar.)
ناقشت اللجنة إمكان أن توسع الوزارة البرنامج العام المقبل.
nāqashati l-lajnatu ʾimkāna ʾan tuwassiʿa l-wizāratu l-barnāmaja l-ʿāma l-muqbil.
The committee discussed the possibility that the ministry would expand the program next year. (Finite clause makes the actor explicit.)
Choose the finite clause when identifying who acts matters. Choose a maṣdar when the action can safely be treated as a compact concept. This is a genuine stylistic and informational choice, not a mechanical word-for-word transformation.
A formal paragraph
ترى اللجنة أن من الضروري أن تتعاون الجهات المختصة كي تحدد أسباب التأخير، وأن تنشر نتائج التحقيق قبل أن تبدأ المرحلة الجديدة؛ فوضوح المسؤوليات يساعد على أن يستعيد الجمهور ثقته بالمشروع.
tarā l-lajnatu ʾanna mina ḍ-ḍarūriyyi ʾan tataʿāwana l-jihātu l-mukhtaṣṣatu kay tuḥaddida ʾasbāba t-taʾkhīri, wa-ʾan tanshura natāʾija t-taḥqīqi qabla ʾan tabdaʾa l-marḥalatu l-jadīdatu; fa-wuḍūḥu l-masʾūliyyāti yusāʿidu ʿalā ʾan yastaʿīda l-jumhūru thiqatahu bil-mashrūʿ.
The committee considers it necessary for the competent bodies to cooperate in identifying the causes of the delay and to publish the investigation results before the new phase begins; clear responsibilities help the public regain confidence in the project. (Formal institutional prose.)
The opening أنّ embeds the proposition after ترى. Every light أنْ or purpose كي then governs its own subjunctive event. Coordinating وأن تنشرَ shares the evaluation frame but not an English comma-splice structure.
Common Mistakes
Inserting an English-style comma before the complement
❌ نريد، أن نبدأ العمل اليوم.
Incorrect punctuation—a short selected complement is not detached from its governing verb by a comma.
✅ نريد أن نبدأ العمل بعد وصول المعدات.
nurīdu ʾan nabdaʾa l-ʿamala baʿda wuṣūli l-muʿaddāt.
We want to begin work after the equipment arrives.
Keeping the indicative or mood nūn after أنْ
❌ نأمل أن تشاركون في الاجتماع المقبل.
Incorrect—the masculine-plural five-verb form loses mood nūn after light أنْ.
✅ نأمل أن تشاركوا في الاجتماع المقبل عبر الإنترنت.
naʾmulu ʾan tushārikū fī l-ijtimāʿi l-muqbili ʿabra l-ʾintarnit.
We hope that you will participate in the next meeting online.
Merging light أنْ with heavy أنّ
❌ قرر المدير أن الموظفين يراجعوا الخطة.
Incorrect hybrid—the sentence mixes heavy أنّ's nominal subject with light أنْ's subjunctive predicate.
✅ قرر المدير أن يراجع الموظفون الخطة هذا الأسبوع.
qarrara l-mudīru ʾan yurājiʿa l-muwaẓẓafūna l-khuṭṭata hādhā l-ʾusbūʿ.
The director decided that the employees should review the plan this week.
Omitting response فـ because another أن-clause is nearby
❌ إن أردتم أن نؤجل الجلسة الموعد البديل يوم الخميس.
Incorrect—the nominal answer to the إنْ condition still needs response-linking فـ.
✅ إن أردتم أن نؤجل الجلسة فالموعد البديل يوم الخميس.
ʾin ʾaradtum ʾan nuʾajjila l-jalsata fa-l-mawʿidu l-badīlu yawma l-khamīs.
If you want us to postpone the session, the alternative date is Thursday.
Backshifting the complement mechanically
❌ كانت المديرة تريد أن سافر الفريق في اليوم التالي.
Incorrect—the light أنْ complement requires a subjunctive imperfect; past matrix time does not license a perfect after it in this construction.
✅ كانت المديرة تريد أن يسافر الفريق في اليوم التالي.
kānati l-mudīratu turīdu ʾan yusāfira l-farīqu fī l-yawmi t-tālī.
The director wanted the team to travel the following day.
Key Takeaways
- Light أنْ selects a finite imperfect subjunctive clause; it is not an infinitive and not heavy أنّ.
- Determine the embedded subject from the matrix predicate and context, then apply ordinary Arabic agreement inside the complement.
- The complement’s time is relative to context, so past reporting does not trigger automatic English-style backshift.
- Prepositional frames give the clause purpose, time, or avoidance readings, while a maṣdar provides a more compact but often less explicit alternative.
