Time Clauses with عندما، حينما، لما

Arabic time linkers organize events relative to one another. عندما and حينما locate one situation at the time of another, temporal لمّا often marks the boundary reached by a completed event, and كلّما establishes a repeated “whenever” relation. Their verb forms cannot be translated one by one as English tenses: a perfect may narrate one past event, establish a future-completed boundary, or describe every occurrence in a recurring pattern.

For event ordering specifically with “before,” “after,” and “since,” continue to

These temporal linkers do not themselves govern subjunctive or jussive mood. The major exception in this spelling neighborhood is negative لمّا “not yet,” a different particle that governs a jussive imperfect.

عندما and حينما: locate one event in another's time

عندما is the broad neutral choice for “when.” It can introduce a past event, a future boundary, or an overlapping situation. حينما covers much of the same ground but often sounds somewhat more written or narrative (formal/literary). Neither requires the two clauses to share a subject.

Compare a matched pair in which the time clause establishes the same past boundary:

عندما وصل القطار، كان معظم المسافرين ينتظرون عند الرصيف.

ʿindamā waṣala l-qiṭāru, kāna muʿẓamu l-musāfirīna yantaẓirūna ʿinda r-raṣīf.

When the train arrived, most of the passengers were waiting by the platform. (Neutral formal MSA.)

ḥīnamā waṣala l-qiṭāru, kāna muʿẓamu l-musāfirīna yantaẓirūna ʿinda r-raṣīf.

When the train arrived, most of the passengers were waiting by the platform. (Slightly more written/narrative.)

Perfect وصل marks the arrival as a bounded event. ينتظرون presents the waiting as already in progress around that boundary. This aspectual contrast, rather than the linker alone, creates the interpretation.

With two imperfects, the relation can be simultaneous or habitual:

تغلق النافذة تلقائيا عندما يكتشف النظام محاولة دخول غير معتادة.

tughlaqu n-nāfidhatu tilqāʾiyyan ʿindamā yaktashifu n-niẓāmu muḥāwalata dukhūlin ghayra muʿtāda(h).

The window closes automatically when the system detects an unusual login attempt.

يكتشفُ is indicative. English uses a present tense in this general condition, and Arabic likewise uses an ordinary imperfect here; عندما is not a jussive governor.

💡
Interpret perfect and imperfect inside the event relation. Perfect gives a bounded occurrence; imperfect gives an unfolding, repeated, or unbounded situation. The time linker tells you how those viewpoints meet.

A future event can use an indicative imperfect

English often uses present tense after future when: “I will call when I arrive.” Arabic commonly does the same with an indicative imperfect after عندما because the main clause and context supply future reference.

sa-ʾattaṣilu bika ʿindamā ʾaṣilu ʾilā l-funduqi hādhā l-masāʾ.

I will call you when I arrive at the hotel this evening.

The arrival is future in interpretation, but أصلُ remains indicative: no subjunctive or jussive particle precedes it. حينما can introduce the same kind of future boundary:

سنسلمك النسخة النهائية حينما ننتهي من مراجعة جميع الملاحق.

sanusallimuka n-nuskhata n-nihāʾiyyata ḥīnamā nantahī min murājaʿati jamīʿi l-malāḥiq.

We will give you the final version once we finish reviewing all the appendices. (Formal future boundary.)

The future interpretation of indicative ننتهي is supplied by the future main clause and event order. The morphology itself is an ordinary imperfect, not a special future tense.

Temporal لمّا: a completed boundary in narrative

Temporal لمّا means “when / once / after.” It is especially natural with a perfect verb in past narrative and often suggests that the first event reached a boundary after which the second occurred. This use is common in formal narration and can sound more literary than neutral عندما.

lammā ntahā l-ʿarḍu, ṭaraḥa l-jumhūru ʾasʾilatan tafṣīliyya(h).

When the presentation ended, the audience asked detailed questions. (Formal narrative.)

The ending and the questions are both perfect, but their order is not inferred from perfect morphology alone: temporal لمّا makes the ending the boundary for the following questions.

The time clause may follow the main event when it identifies the setting after the fact:

تنفس الفريق الصعداء لما وصلت رسالة الموافقة أخيرا.

tanaffasa l-farīqu ṣ-ṣuʿadāʾa lammā waṣalat risālatu l-muwāfaqati ʾakhīran.

The team breathed a sigh of relief when the approval message finally arrived.

This order presents the reaction first and then identifies its trigger. A comma is not needed before a short, closely integrated final time clause.

Temporal لمّا versus negative لمّا

Unvocalized Arabic writes both uses as لما, and both are pronounced lammā, but their syntax is different.

UseTypical form after itMeaningMood effect
temporal لمّاperfect clausewhen / oncenone
negative لمّاjussive imperfectnot yetgoverns jussive

lammā waṣala t-taqrīru, badaʾati l-lajnatu munāqashatah.

When the report arrived, the committee began discussing it.

lammā yaṣili t-taqrīru baʿdu, wa-lidhālika lam tabdaʾi l-lajnatu munāqashatah.

The report has not arrived yet, so the committee has not begun discussing it. (Negative لمّا plus jussive.)

Underlying jussive يصلْ acquires a helping i before the definite article in connected speech. Negative لمّا implies that arrival remains possible or expected; plain لم يصل merely negates a past arrival.

كلّما: every recurrence activates another

كلّما means “whenever / every time that” and establishes a repeated correlation. Formal Arabic very often uses perfect morphology in both clauses even when the statement is habitual and not confined to the past.

kullamā ntahā jtimāʿun, kataba l-muqarriru mulakhkhaṣan wa-ʾarsalahu ʾilā l-ʾaʿḍāʾ.

Whenever a meeting ends, the recording secretary writes a summary and sends it to the members.

The perfects انتهى، كتب، أرسل distribute over every occurrence. Translating each as simple English past would wrongly turn a standing procedure into one historical episode.

An imperfect can foreground an activity that repeatedly unfolds:

كلما أزور المكتبة، أكتشف مصدرا جديدا يفيد البحث.

kullamā ʾazūru l-maktabata, ʾaktashifu maṣdaran jadīdan yufīdu l-baḥth.

Whenever I visit the library, I discover a new source that helps the research.

This imperfect pattern is intelligible and used, while the perfect-perfect pattern is especially established in polished formal prose. كلّما is not appropriate for a single, nonrecurring meeting; use عندما or لمّا there.

💡
Perfect after كلّما is distributive, not automatically past: it presents each recurrence as a complete token in the repeated pattern.

Clause order and punctuation

Preposed time clauses create a frame, so a comma is helpful when the clause is long. A short final time clause is normally integrated without an obligatory comma.

ʿindamā tatalaqqā l-ʾidāratu n-nuskhata l-muwaqqaʿata min jamīʿi l-ʾaṭrāfi, tursiluhā ʾilā l-ʾarshīfi l-markaziyy.

When the administration receives the copy signed by all parties, it sends it to the central archive.

tursilu l-ʾidāratu n-nuskhata ʾilā l-ʾarshīfi l-markaziyyi ʿindamā tatalaqqā tawqīʿāti jamīʿi l-ʾaṭrāf.

The administration sends the copy to the central archive when it receives all parties' signatures.

The first order makes receipt the procedural trigger. The second asserts the action first and adds its timing. Neither order changes the indicative mood of تتلقى.

A formal paragraph

ʿindamā badaʾati l-marḥalatu t-tajrībiyyatu, kānati l-firaqu tusajjilu kulla mulāḥaẓatin fawra ẓuhūrihā; wa-kullamā ktashafa l-bāḥithūna khalalan, ʾawqafū l-ikhtibāra ḥattā yuʿālijūhu. wa-lammā ntahati l-ʾasābīʿu l-ʾarbaʿatu, jamaʿati l-ʾidāratu n-natāʾija, lakinnahā lammā tattakhidh qarāran nihāʾiyyan baʿdu liʾannahā tantaẓiru raʾya l-lajnati l-mustaqilla(h).

When the pilot phase began, the teams recorded every observation as soon as it appeared; whenever the researchers found a defect, they stopped the test until they addressed it. Once the four weeks ended, management compiled the results, but it has not yet made a final decision because it is awaiting the independent committee's opinion. (Formal report.)

This paragraph deliberately contains both forms of لمّا: temporal ولمّا انتهت with a perfect, then negative لمّا تتخذْ with a jussive imperfect.

Common Mistakes

Translating every English “when” as عندما

Incorrect—English interrogative 'when?' requires متى, not the clause linker عندما.

matā sayaṣilu l-mudīru ʾilā l-maqarri l-jadīd?

When will the director arrive at the new headquarters?

Assigning jussive mood after temporal

sa-ʾattaṣilu bika ʿindamā ʾaṣil ʾilā l-funduq

Incorrect reading—عندما does not govern jussive; the verb is indicative ʾaṣilu.

sa-ʾursilu laka risālatan ʿindamā ʾaṣilu ʾilā l-funduq.

I will send you a message when I arrive at the hotel.

Merging temporal and negative

Incorrect for 'when the report arrived'—an imperfect after لما is read as negative 'has not arrived yet,' not as the completed temporal boundary.

lammā waṣala t-taqrīru, badaʾati l-lajnatu murājaʿatahu fī l-yawmi nafsih.

When the report arrived, the committee began reviewing it that same day.

Using كلما for one occurrence

Incorrect—the adverb أمس identifies one event, while كلما requires recurrence.

ʿindamā waṣala ḍ-ḍayfu ʾamsi, badaʾa l-ḥaflu baʿda daqāʾiq.

When the guest arrived yesterday, the event began a few minutes later.

Backshifting automatically and inserting an unnecessary comma

Incorrect—the past progressive copies English backshift and the comma wrongly detaches a short integrated time clause.

qālat ʾinnahā satattaṣilu ʿindamā taṣilu ʾilā l-funduqi ghadan.

She said that she would call when she arrives at the hotel tomorrow.

Key Takeaways

  • عندما is neutral “when”; حينما often has a more written or narrative flavor.
  • Temporal لمّا + perfect establishes a boundary; negative لمّا + jussive imperfect means “not yet.”
  • كلّما requires recurrence, and perfect morphology after it can have habitual rather than past-time value.
  • Time linkers do not themselves govern mood; local particles do.
  • Use clause order and punctuation to distinguish a framing time clause from a short integrated final clause.
