Lebanese صار organizes change. A person becomes tired, an event comes about, a new activity begins, or enough time accumulates for a state to have lasted. Its modal b-imperfect بيصير also asks whether an action is possible or acceptable.
English divides those meanings among become, happen, start, can, and have been. The meanings are related in Lebanese, but each has its own complement frame. Review the hollow-verb forms in the صار verb reference; the goal here is to choose the frame that matches the discourse job.
The construction map
| Lebanese frame | Function | Natural English |
|---|---|---|
| صار + adjective/noun | change of state or role | became / got |
| صار شي / شو صار؟ | event occurrence | something happened / what happened? |
| صار في + noun | new situation or availability | there was / there came to be |
| صار + bare imperfect | onset of an activity | started to |
| صارلـ + duration + state/activity | elapsed time up to a reference point | have/has been ... for |
| بيصير + bare imperfect | possibility or acceptability | can / is it okay to |
| شو عم بيصير؟ | event unfolding now | what is happening? |
| شو صاير؟ | resulting/current situation | what's going on? |
These are ordinary urban Lebanese (informal/neutral). Formal writing normally chooses more specific MSA verbs for “became,” “occurred,” or “is permissible”; importing those forms into relaxed conversation changes register.
Become: a new state, identity, or relationship
With an adjective or noun predicate, صار presents a transition into that property. It is not simply another present copula. Agreement belongs to صار and, where applicable, to the predicate.
بعد التصليح صار الصوت أوطى بكتير.
baʿd et-taṣlīḥ ṣār eṣ-ṣawt awṭa b-ktīr.
After the repair, the noise became much quieter. (neutral; change of property)
مع الوقت صارت هالمكتبة محلنا المفضل للدراسة.
maʿ el-waʾet ṣārit hal-maktabe maḥallna l-mfaḍḍal lid-dirēse.
Over time, this library became our favorite place to study. (neutral; feminine subject)
كنا زمايل بالشغل وبعدين صرنا أصحاب.
kinna zmēyel bish-shoghol w-baʿdēn ṣirna aṣḥāb.
We were coworkers, and then we became friends. (informal; plural change of relationship)
Compare plain هو تعبان “he is tired” with صار تعبان “he became/got tired.” English be can describe either state depending on tense and context; Lebanese صار explicitly profiles the boundary into the state.
Happen and come about
As an event verb, صار can stand without a following predicate. شو صار؟ asks for the completed event or outcome. صار شي؟ asks whether anything happened. With في, it presents a new situation, event, or availability.
سمعنا صوت قوي من الشارع؛ شو صار؟
smiʿna ṣawt ʾawe min esh-shēreʿ; shū ṣār?
We heard a loud noise from the street—what happened? (informal; completed event question)
صار في عطل بالكهربا وتأخر العرض نص ساعة.
ṣār fī ʿoṭol bil-kahraba w-tʾakhkhar el-ʿarḍ noṣṣ sēʿa.
There was a power failure, and the show was delayed by half an hour. (neutral; new event with صار في)
ما صار شي خطير، بس اضطرينا نغير الطريق.
ma ṣār she khaṭīr, bass iḍṭarrēna nghayyer eṭ-ṭarīʾ.
Nothing serious happened, but we had to change route. (informal reassurance)
The affected participant appears with لـ: شو صارله؟ “what happened to him?” A participant's circumstances can also be framed with مع: شو صار معه؟ “what happened with/to him?” The two overlap, but صارله focuses readily on what befell the person, whereas صار معه can invite the story around the person's situation.
An event unfolding versus its resulting situation
Three high-frequency questions differ in viewpoint:
- شو صار؟ looks back at a bounded event or asks for its outcome.
- شو عم بيصير؟ asks about a process unfolding now. The Beirut production baseline keeps b- after عم.
- شو صاير؟ uses the active participle and asks about the present situation or visible result.
ليش الكل واقف برا؟ شو عم بيصير جوا؟
lēsh el-kill wāʾef barra? shū ʿam byṣīr zhuwwe?
Why is everyone standing outside? What's happening inside? (informal; unfolding process)
وجهك أصفر وما عم بتحكي؛ شو صاير معك؟
wizhzhak aṣfar w-ma ʿam btiḥke; shū ṣāyer maʿak?
Your face is pale and you're not talking—what's going on with you? (informal; current resulting state)
The questions can occur in the same conversation because they request different slices of one situation. English “what happened?” often covers both past event and present concern, so English speakers must choose more explicitly in Lebanese.
Onset: صار + bare imperfect
When صار is followed by an imperfect verb without b-, it marks entry into a repeated or continuing activity: “started/began to.” This is an aspectual frame, not two separately asserted events.
لما ذكرنا السفر، صار يحكي عن كل مدينة زارها.
lamma zkarna s-safar, ṣār yiḥke ʿan kill mdīne zāra.
When we mentioned travel, he started talking about every city he'd visited. (informal; onset of an extended activity)
بعد ما غيرت شغلها، صارت تنام أحسن.
baʿd ma ghayyarit shoghla, ṣārit tnēm aḥsan.
After changing jobs, she started sleeping better. (informal; feminine onset construction)
Do not insert habitual b- after onset صار in the course baseline. For the wider family of onset and cessation verbs, see start and stop constructions.
Elapsed time: صارلـ
In صارلـ + duration, the suffix identifies the experiencer whose state has continued. English uses present perfect and places for before the duration; Lebanese packages the elapsed interval inside صارلـ.
صارلي تلات سنين ساكن بهالبناية وبعدني ما بعرف كل الجيران.
ṣārle tlēt snīn sāken b-hal-binēye w-baʿdne ma baʿref kill el-zhīrān.
I've lived in this building for three years, and I still don't know all the neighbors. (informal; continuing state)
صارلنا ساعة عم بنستنى والموظف بعده ما وصل.
ṣārlna sēʿa ʿam bnistanna wil-mwaẓẓaf baʿdo ma wiṣel.
We've been waiting for an hour, and the employee still hasn't arrived. (informal; elapsed progressive)
قديش صارلك ما شفت خالتك؟
ʾaddēsh ṣārlak ma shift khāltak?
How long has it been since you saw your aunt? (informal; elapsed time since a negative interval began)
The continuation may be a participial state, an عم + b-imperfect activity, or ما + perfect for time since the last occurrence. The صارلـ guide treats the full paradigm and time logic.
Possibility and permission: بيصير
Impersonal بيصير asks whether an action can appropriately happen. In a request, it often means “is it okay if...?” The following action is bare and agrees with its own subject.
بيصير نأجل الموعد لنص ساعة؟
byṣīr nʾazzhel el-mawʿed la-noṣṣ sēʿa?
Can we postpone the appointment by half an hour? (neutral request for acceptability)
ما بيصير تترك الباب مفتوح والولاد لحالن بالبيت.
ma byṣīr titrok el-bēb maftūḥ wil-wlād la-ḥālon bil-bēt.
You can't leave the door open while the children are home alone. (informal; unacceptable action)
This is not identical to ability فيني. فيني ارفع الصندوق asks whether I am able to lift it; بيصير ارفع الصندوق؟ asks whether lifting it is allowed or workable in the situation.
A safe substitution frame
Use صار + agreeing adjective or role noun to express genuine entry into a new state. Change the subject and predicate together where agreement is audible.
بعد التحديث صارت الصفحة أسرع وصار الدفع أسهل.
baʿd et-taḥdīth ṣārit eṣ-ṣafḥa asraʿ w-ṣār ed-dafʿ ashal.
After the update, the page became faster and payment became easier. (neutral; two productive change-of-state predicates)
Dialogue 1: after a delay
صارلك زمان ناطر؟ شو صار عالموعد؟
ṣārlak zamēn nāṭer? shū ṣār ʿal-mawʿed?
Lina: Have you been waiting long? What happened with the appointment? (informal)
صار في حالة طارئة، فصار الدكتور يتأخر عن كل مواعيده.
ṣār fī ḥāle ṭārʾa, fa-ṣār ed-doktōr yitʾakhkhar ʿan kill mawāʿīdo.
Fadi: There was an emergency, so the doctor started running late for all his appointments. (neutral; event then onset)
Dialogue 2: asking permission
بيصير فوت حط الشنطة جوا؟
byṣīr fūt ḥoṭṭ esh-shanṭa zhuwwe?
Guest: Can I go in and put the bag inside? (informal permission request)
إيه طبعا، بس دير بالك لأن الأرض صارت زلقة.
ē ṭabʿan, bass dīr bēlak laʾann el-arḍ ṣārit zalʾa.
Host: Yes, of course, but be careful because the floor has become slippery. (informal)
Common Mistakes
Using صار for a plain past state
❌ مبارح صار المكتب مسكر طول النهار.
Wrong if the meaning is simply ‘the office was closed’; صار adds a change into that state.
✅ مبارح كان المكتب مسكر طول النهار بسبب الصيانة.
mbēreḥ kēn el-maktab msakkar ṭūl en-nahār b-sabab eṣ-ṣiyēne.
Yesterday the office was closed all day because of maintenance.
Keeping b- after onset صار
❌ صار بيحكي بسرعة لما توتر.
Incorrect for the course's onset frame — صار selects the bare imperfect.
✅ صار يحكي بسرعة لما سألوه عن الفاتورة.
ṣār yiḥke b-sorʿa lamma saʾalū ʿan el-fātūra.
He started speaking quickly when they asked him about the invoice.
Dropping the experiencer from elapsed time
❌ صار سنتين بشتغل هون.
Incorrect for ‘I have worked here for two years’ — the experiencer must appear on صارلـ.
✅ صارلي سنتين بشتغل هون ومرتاح بالشغل.
ṣārle sintēn bishtaghel hōn w-mirtēḥ bish-shoghol.
I've worked here for two years, and I'm comfortable in the job.
Dropping b- after عم
❌ شو عم يصير بالمطبخ؟
Outside the course's Beirut production baseline — this guide uses عم + b-imperfect.
✅ شو عم بيصير بالمطبخ؟ ريحة الدخان واصلة لهون.
shū ʿam byṣīr bil-maṭbakh? rīḥit ed-dokhkhān wāṣle la-hōn.
What's happening in the kitchen? The smell of smoke reaches all the way here.
Confusing ability with acceptability
❌ بيصير شيل هالصندوق لحالي، أنا قوي.
Wrong modal for physical ability — بيصير asks whether the action is possible or acceptable in the situation.
✅ فيني شيل هالصندوق لحالي، ما تقيل عليي.
fīne shīl haṣ-ṣondūʾ la-ḥāle, ma tʾīl ʿalayye.
I can carry this box by myself; it isn't too heavy for me.
Key Takeaways
Use صار + predicate for entry into a state, bare صار or صار في for events that come about, صار + bare imperfect for onset, and صارلـ + duration for elapsed time. بيصير + bare imperfect asks about situational possibility or acceptability. In discourse, distinguish completed شو صار؟, unfolding شو عم بيصير؟, and result-oriented شو صاير؟.
