صار or بقي for Become

In the Beirut baseline, choose صار when a new state or event comes into existence: “become, get, turn, happen, start.” Choose بقي when something remains after other possibilities disappear, is left over, or continues from an earlier point: “remain, stay, be left.” English become is therefore a strong cue for صار, not a license to alternate the two verbs freely.

Some neighboring Levantine varieties extend بقي further into change-of-state meanings. Learners should recognize that regional system, but production on this page keeps صار for productive Beirut “become” and بقي for residue or persistence.

Decision tree

  1. Did the subject enter a new adjective, noun, role, or situation? Use صار.
  2. Did an event happen or a new existential situation arise? Use صار / صار في.
  3. Did an activity begin or become habitual? Use صار + bare imperfect.
  4. Does the clause ask what remains, is left, or survives after subtraction? Use بقي or participial باقي.
  5. Does a person or state simply continue without interruption? بقي can express remaining, but conversational Beirut often prefers ضل for “keep/stay.”
  6. Is duration measured up to now? صارلـ + duration means “have been ... for.” Is duration still available before a deadline? بقي + duration means “duration remains.”
💡
Picture the timeline. صار puts a boundary before a new state; بقي looks past a boundary and asks what is still there afterward.

صار: entry into a new state

صار agrees with the subject that changes. Its complement may be an adjective, noun, role, or fuller phrase.

القهوة صارت باردة بعد ما تركناها عالطاولة.

el-ʾahwe ṣārit bārde baʿd ma taraknāha ʿaṭ-ṭāwle.

The coffee got cold after we left it on the table. (change of state)

الغرفة الزغيرة صارت مكتب بعد الترميم.

el-ghorfe z-zghīre ṣārit maktab baʿd et-tarmīm.

The small room became an office after the renovation. (new nominal role)

رنا صارت مسؤولة عن تدريب الموظفين هالسنة.

Rana ṣārit masʾūle ʿan tadrīb el-mwaẓẓafīn hal-sane.

Rana became responsible for training the employees this year. (new professional role)

English become can sound formal, but Lebanese صار is completely ordinary. Natural translations include got, turned, became, and is now.

بقي: residue, remainder, and continuing presence

With بقي, the semantic subject is the thing that remains. A relevant person can appear with مع، عند، لـ، على.

بقي معنا جبنة وخيار للفطور.

baʾi maʿna zhibne w-khiyār lal-fṭūr.

We had cheese and cucumbers left for breakfast. (remaining supply)

ما بقي غير طاولة وحدة فاضية.

ma baʾi ghēr ṭāwle waḥde fāḍye.

Only one empty table was left. (restricted remainder)

بقي عليي قسطين وبخلص دين السيارة.

baʾi ʿalayye ʾisṭēn w-bkhalles dēn es-sayyāra.

I have two installments left, and then I'll finish paying off the car loan. (remaining obligation)

The participle باقي presents a current remainder: باقي معنا يومين “we have two days left.” The noun الباقي means “the rest.” See بقي for the final-weak paradigm.

Minimal pair 1: became cold versus remained cold

صار الجو بارد بعد الغروب.

ṣār el-zhaww bēred baʿd el-ghorūb.

The weather became cold after sunset. (entry into a colder state)

بقي الجو بارد تاني يوم.

baʾi l-zhaww bēred tēne yōm.

The weather remained cold the next day. (continuation of the earlier state; careful/neutral)

For everyday Beirut “kept/stayed cold,” ضل الجو بارد is often more idiomatic than the second sentence. The pair nevertheless shows the semantic opposition: صار creates the cold state; بقي/ضل carries it forward.

Minimal pair 2: a new role versus the same role continuing

بعد الانتخابات صار مدير الجمعية.

baʿd el-intikhābāt ṣār mdīr el-zhamʿiyye.

After the election he became the association's director. (new role)

بعد الانتخابات بقي مدير الجمعية.

baʿd el-intikhābāt baʾi mdīr el-zhamʿiyye.

After the election he remained the association's director. (same role retained; careful/neutral)

The second sentence presupposes that he was already director. Conversational Beirut may again use ضل مدير الجمعية to foreground uninterrupted continuation.

Minimal pair 3: elapsed duration versus time remaining

صارلي ساعتين ناطر الرد.

ṣārle sēʿtēn nāṭer er-radd.

I've been waiting for the reply for two hours. (elapsed interval continuing to now)

بقي معي ساعتين قبل ما سكر المكتب.

baʾi maʿe sēʿtēn ʾabel ma sakker el-maktab.

I have two hours left before I close the office. (time still available)

English uses two hours in both, but the temporal arrows point in opposite directions. صارلي measures backward from now to the onset; بقي معي measures forward from a reference point to a limit.

💡
For a duration, ask “already accumulated or still available?” Accumulated ongoing time takes صارلـ; time left takes بقي/باقي.

Events and new situations with صار

Bare شو صار؟ asks what happened. صار في + noun introduces a newly arisen situation, and صار + bare imperfect marks activity onset.

شو صار مع الزبون بعد الاجتماع؟

shū ṣār maʿ ez-zabūn baʿd el-izhtimēʿ?

What happened with the customer after the meeting? (completed event question)

صار في مشكلة بالكهربا واضطرينا نسكر المحل.

ṣār fī mishkle bil-kahraba w-iḍṭarrēna nsakker el-maḥall.

An electricity problem developed, and we had to close the shop. (new existential situation)

بعد الدورة صار يكتب أسرع وبثقة أكبر.

baʿd ed-dawra ṣār yiktob asraʿ w-b-thiʾa akbar.

After the course he started writing faster and with greater confidence. (activity onset plus bare imperfect)

Do not add habitual b- after onset صار in this construction. The following verb is bare because صار licenses the dependent activity.

Asking what happened versus what remains

شو صار بالمصاري؟

shū ṣār bil-maṣāre?

What happened to the money? (event or development)

شو بقي من المصاري؟

shū baʾi min el-maṣāre?

What is left of the money? (remainder)

This fourth minimal pair makes the viewpoint explicit: the first asks for the story; the second asks for the residue after spending or loss.

Predicate types and the third option ضل

صار productively takes adjective and noun predicates, and a bare imperfect for onset. بقي readily has a remaining entity as subject, a location, or a continuing predicate. For a person deliberately staying or an activity continuing, Beirut frequently chooses ضل.

بقيت بالجامعة لحتى خلصت المحاضرة.

bʾīt bil-zhēmʿa la-ḥatta khilṣit el-muḥāḍara.

I remained at the university until the lecture ended. (neutral/careful remaining at a place)

ضليت بالمكتب لحتى خلص الاجتماع.

ḍallēt bil-maktab la-ḥatta khiliṣ el-izhtimēʿ.

I stayed at the office until the meeting ended. (more conversational Beirut continuation)

This page is not claiming that بقي is absent from Beirut. It is frequent for remainders and fully possible for remaining. The warning is narrower: do not use it as the default productive equivalent of “become,” and do not ignore colloquial ضل where continuation is the real meaning.

An ambiguous case resolved by context: بقي يومين

Without an overt subject, بقي يومين can be heard as “he stayed two days” or “two days remained.” The following phrase and discourse establish which participant is semantic subject.

هو بقي يومين بالضيعة بعد العيد.

huwwe baʾi yōmēn biḍ-ḍayʿa baʿd el-ʿīd.

He stayed two days in the village after the holiday. (person remains; careful/neutral)

بقي يومين عالتسليم، ولازم نخلص التقرير.

baʾi yōmēn ʿat-taslīm, w-lāzem nkhalles et-taʾrīr.

Two days remain until delivery, and we have to finish the report. (duration is the remainder)

The first explicitly supplies هو and a location; the second supplies a deadline and treats يومين as the postverbal remainder.

Learner repair: correcting a false change-of-state بقي

A learner says بقي الجو بارد فجأة intending “the weather suddenly became cold.” فجأة creates a change boundary, so Beirut صار is required.

بقي الجو بارد فجأة.

baʾi l-zhaww bēred fazhʾa.

The weather remained cold suddenly. (semantic mismatch in the intended Beirut reading)

قصدي، صار الجو بارد فجأة.

ʾaṣde, ṣār el-zhaww bēred fazhʾa.

I mean, the weather suddenly turned cold. (change-of-state repair)

If the intended meaning were continuation, repair instead to ضل الجو بارد تاني يوم “the weather stayed cold the next day.”

Regional preferences and recognition

Broader change-of-state بقي occurs in neighboring speech (regional: parts of Syria, Palestine, and Jordan) and in some careful or contact-shaped usage. Those speakers are not using “bad صار”; their system gives بقي a wider range. Beirut production here keeps صار الجو بارد for “it became cold” and بقي/ضل الجو بارد for “it remained cold.” Label the speaker or variety instead of blending both systems into one unrestricted synonym pair.

Common Mistakes

Using بقي for productive Beirut “become”

❌ بقي الحي أهدى بعد ما فتحوا الأوتوستراد.

Nonbaseline for the intended change-of-state meaning in ordinary Beirut production.

✅ صار الحي أهدى بعد ما فتحوا الأوتوستراد.

ṣār el-ḥayy ahda baʿd ma fataḥo l-otostrād.

The neighborhood became quieter after they opened the highway.

Using صار for something merely left over

❌ صار معنا كرسي واحد بعد ما قعد الكل.

Not the intended remainder construal: this can mean ‘we ended up with one chair,’ profiling a new resultant situation rather than the chair left over.

✅ بقي معنا كرسي واحد بعد ما قعد الكل.

baʾi maʿna kirse wāḥad baʿd ma ʾiʿid el-kill.

We had one chair left after everyone sat down.

Confusing elapsed time with time remaining

❌ صارلي ساعة قبل ما يبلش الاجتماع.

Wrong if the intended meaning is ‘one hour remains before the meeting.’

✅ بقي ساعة قبل ما يبلش الاجتماع.

baʾi sēʿa ʾabel ma yballesh el-izhtimēʿ.

One hour remains before the meeting starts.

Keeping b- after onset صار

❌ صار بيشتغل من البيت.

Wrong for the intended onset construction; dependent ‘started working’ uses the bare imperfect.

✅ صار يشتغل من البيت تلات أيام بالأسبوع.

ṣār yishtoghol min el-bēt tlēt ayyēm bil-osbūʿ.

He started working from home three days a week.

Key Takeaways

Use صار for a new state, event, role, or activity onset. Use بقي/باقي for residue, time left, and what continues after a boundary; consider conversational ضل when uninterrupted staying is foregrounded. Distinguish accumulated صارلـ + duration from remaining بقي + duration. Recognize regional change-of-state بقي, but do not mix it silently into the Beirut production baseline.
