Lebanese حطّ begins with physical placement: an agent causes something to be at a location. From that concrete scene, it extends to adding ingredients, entering information, setting devices, applying products, and a small set of mental and discourse frames.
English put overlaps strongly with حطّ, which makes the non-overlap dangerous. “Put the bag on the chair” transfers directly; “put on a jacket,” “put off a meeting,” and “put up with noise” do not form one Lebanese family. Review the geminate paradigm in the حطّ verb reference; this page maps the complements that Beirut speakers actually use.
The collocation map
| Lebanese frame | Meaning | Constraint |
|---|---|---|
| حطّ شي بـ... | put something in/at... | container, interior, or ordinary location |
| حطّ شي عـ... | put something on... | surface, setting, or destination |
| حطّ سكر / ملح | add sugar / salt | ingredient goes into a mixture |
| حطّ المنبه عـ... | set the alarm for... | device plus setting |
| حطّ عطر / مكياج | put on perfume / makeup | applied product, not general clothing |
| حطّ نظارات | put on glasses | wearable accessory |
| حطّ ببالك إنو... | keep in mind that... | mental reminder |
| حطّ حالك محلّه | put yourself in his place | perspective-taking |
| حطّ الحقّ على حدا | blame someone | fixed argument frame |
All are ordinary Lebanese (informal/neutral) except حطّ بعين الاعتبار, discussed below, which leans toward careful or professional speech. The same verb carries these meanings, but each row has its own complement pattern.
Physical placement: بـ, عـ, and location words
The theme is a direct object. A following location completes the scene. بـ presents a container, interior, or ordinary location; عـ presents a surface or destination. Location nouns such as حدّ، تحت، فوق، ورا need no copied English particle.
حطيت المفتاح بالدرج التاني كرمال ما يضيع.
ḥaṭṭēt el-miftēḥ bid-darazh et-tēne kirmēl ma yḍīʿ.
I put the key in the second drawer so it wouldn't get lost. (informal; container with بـ)
حط الكتب عالرف وخلي الفواتير حد الكمبيوتر.
ḥoṭṭ el-kotob ʿar-raff w-khalle l-fawātīr ḥadd el-kompyūtar.
Put the books on the shelf and leave the bills by the computer. (informal; surface versus adjacency)
With an object suffix, the theme stays attached to the verb: حطّه، حطّها، حطّهن. The suffix is not a location; the location still follows.
إذا خلصت من الملف، حطه عند الاستقبال.
iza khallaṣt min el-malaf, ḥoṭṭo ʿind el-istiʾbēl.
When you're done with the file, leave it at reception. (neutral; masculine object suffix)
Adding, entering, and setting
When an item joins a mixture or system, physical placement is reinterpreted as “add” or “enter.” Food ingredients, form fields, calendar entries, and device settings are especially common.
ما تحط ملح هلق، دوق الشوربة بالأول.
ma tḥoṭṭ mileḥ hallaʾ, dūʾ esh-shōrba bil-awwal.
Don't add salt yet; taste the soup first. (informal kitchen instruction)
حط رقم الطلب بالخانة الأخيرة واضغط تأكيد.
ḥoṭṭ raʾam eṭ-ṭalab bil-khāne l-akhīra w-iḍghaṭ taʾkīd.
Enter the order number in the last field and press confirm. (neutral technical instruction)
حطيت المنبه عالخمسة ونص لأن رح نطلع بكير.
ḥaṭṭēt el-mnabbeh ʿal-khamse w-noṣṣ laʾann raḥ niṭlaʿ bkīr.
I set the alarm for five thirty because we're leaving early. (informal; device setting)
Aspect matters. بحطّ describes a habit, حطّيت a completed setting, and Beirut عم بحطّ an action unfolding now. The placement meaning does not itself select an aspect.
Wearing and applying: a limited extension
For products placed onto the body, حطّ can mean “apply/put on”: حطّ عطر، حطّ كريم، حطّ مكياج. With نظارات, it can describe putting on or wearing glasses in context. This does not make حطّ a general verb “wear.” Ordinary clothes select لبس.
حطت واقي شمس قبل ما تنزل عالبحر.
ḥaṭṭit wāʾe shams ʾabel ma tinzal ʿal-baḥer.
She put on sunscreen before going down to the sea. (informal; applied product)
حط نظاراتك إذا الخط صغير عليك.
ḥoṭṭ naẓẓārātak iza l-khaṭṭ ṣghīr ʿalēk.
Put on your glasses if the print is too small for you. (informal; accessory)
لبست جاكيت خفيف وحطيت عطر قبل ما اطلع.
lbist zhākēt khafīf w-ḥaṭṭēt ʿiṭer ʾabel ma iṭlaʿ.
I put on a light jacket and some perfume before going out. (informal; clothes with لبس, applied product with حطّ)
The sentence حطّ الجاكيت عالكرسي can only mean placing the jacket on the chair. If the location disappears, حطّ الجاكيت remains ambiguous or context-dependent and is not the safest way to say “put on the jacket.”
Mental frames: reminder, perspective, and consideration
حطّ ببالك إنو... asks the listener to keep a fact in mind. It is stronger than merely knowing the fact: it presents it as relevant to a coming choice. حطّ حالك محلّ فلان asks for perspective-taking, not a literal move.
حط ببالك إنو الجمعة الطريق بتكون عجقة.
ḥoṭṭ b-bēlak inno l-zhomʿa ṭ-ṭarīʾ btkūn ʿazhʾa.
Keep in mind that traffic is heavy on Fridays. (informal reminder)
قبل ما تزعل منها، حط حالك محلها وفكر بالضغط يلي عليها.
ʾabel ma tizʿal minna, ḥoṭṭ ḥālak maḥalla w-fakker biḍ-ḍaghṭ yalle ʿalēha.
Before getting upset with her, put yourself in her place and think about the pressure she's under. (informal)
For a deliberate factor in planning, حطّ بعين الاعتبار “take into consideration” is common in careful speech (formal-leaning professional). Everyday alternatives include حسب حساب or a more specific انتبه لـ.
حطينا وقت التوصيل بعين الاعتبار قبل ما نختار المورد.
ḥaṭṭēna waʾt et-tawṣīl b-ʿēn el-iʿtibār ʾabel ma nikhtār el-mwarrid.
We took delivery time into consideration before choosing the supplier. (formal-leaning professional speech)
English “assume” is not generally حطّ. For an explicit hypothetical premise, use خلينا نفترض إنو... (neutral/formal-leaning). حطّ حالك... works only when the speaker constructs a perspective or scenario.
Fixed frames with prepositions
Some frames have become idiomatic. حطّ الحقّ على حدا assigns blame; حطّ الموضوع عجنب postpones or brackets a topic; حطّ براسه يعمل شي presents someone as becoming set on an intention.
ما تحط الحق كله عالموظف؛ التعليمات ما كانت واضحة.
ma tḥoṭṭ el-ḥaʾʾ killo ʿal-mwaẓẓaf; et-taʿlīmāt ma kēnit wāḍḥa.
Don't put all the blame on the employee; the instructions weren't clear. (neutral)
خلينا نحط هالموضوع عجنب ونحل المشكلة العاجلة.
khallīna nḥoṭṭ hal-mawḍūʿ ʿa-zhanb w-nḥill el-moshkle l-ʿāzhle.
Let's set this issue aside and solve the urgent problem. (neutral discussion)
حط براسه يخلص المشروع لحاله وما قبل مساعدة.
ḥaṭṭ b-rāso ykhalliṣ el-mashrūʿ la-ḥālo w-ma ʾbil msēʿade.
He got it into his head to finish the project alone and wouldn't accept help. (informal; determined intention, often with critical coloring)
These prepositions are part of the expressions. Replacing على with لـ in the blame frame or removing بـ from ببالك changes or destroys the intended reading.
A safe substitution frame
The safest productive frame is physical: حطّ + movable object + location. Substitute a concrete theme and a location that genuinely supports, contains, or neighbors it.
حط القهوة عالطاولة والمي بالبراد.
ḥoṭṭ el-ʾahwe ʿaṭ-ṭāwle wil-mayy bil-barrād.
Put the coffee on the table and the water in the fridge. (informal; two safe location substitutions)
Do not treat the idiomatic rows as open slots. الحقّ is licensed in حطّ الحقّ على; replacing it with a random abstract noun does not necessarily produce a known expression.
Dialogue 1: cooking together
حطيت الثوم ولا بعد؟
ḥaṭṭēt eth-thūm walla baʿed?
Rana: Did you add the garlic yet? (informal)
بعد، عم بحط الخضرة، وبعدين بحط الثوم لحتى ما يحترق.
baʿed, ʿam bḥoṭṭ el-khoḍra, w-baʿdēn bḥoṭṭ eth-thūm la-ḥatta ma yiḥtiriʾ.
Tarek: Not yet—I'm adding the vegetables, and then I'll add the garlic so it doesn't burn. (informal; Beirut progressive عم + b-imperfect)
Dialogue 2: scheduling a visit
عأي ساعة حطيت الموعد مع الكهربجي؟
ʿa-ayy sēʿa ḥaṭṭēt el-mawʿed maʿ el-kaharbazhe?
Maya: What time did you set the appointment with the electrician for? (informal)
حطيته عالعشرة، بس حطي ببالك إنو ممكن يتأخر بالعجقة.
ḥaṭṭēto ʿal-ʿashra, bass ḥoṭṭe b-bēlik inno momken yitʾakhkhar bil-ʿazhʾa.
Nadim: I set it for ten, but keep in mind that he might be delayed by traffic. (informal)
Common Mistakes
Extending “put on” to ordinary clothes
❌ حطيت الكنزة لأن كان برد.
Incorrect for ‘put on the sweater’ — ordinary clothing uses لبس.
✅ لبست الكنزة لأن الجو برد عالمسا.
lbist el-kanze laʾann el-zhaww barad ʿal-masa.
I put on the sweater because the weather got cold in the evening.
Calquing “put off”
❌ حطينا الاجتماع لبكرا.
Ambiguous or misleading for ‘postponed the meeting’ — حطينا can merely mean scheduled.
✅ أجلنا الاجتماع لبكرا لأن نص الفريق غايب.
azzhalna l-izhtimēʿ la-bokra laʾann noṣṣ el-farīʾ ghāyeb.
We postponed the meeting until tomorrow because half the team is absent.
Using the wrong location relation
❌ حطيت الأوراق عالدرج وسكرته.
Incorrect for ‘in the drawer’ — a drawer as container takes بـ.
✅ حطيت الأوراق بالدرج وسكرته بالمفتاح.
ḥaṭṭēt el-awrāʾ bid-darazh w-sakkarto bil-miftēḥ.
I put the papers in the drawer and locked it with the key.
Using حطّ as a general “assume”
❌ حط إنو السعر رح يزيد.
Unnatural as a bare logical assumption — this frame needs افترض or a licensed idiom.
✅ خلينا نفترض إنو السعر رح يزيد عشرة بالمية.
khallīna niftareḍ inno s-siʿer raḥ yzīd ʿashara bil-miyye.
Let's assume that the price will rise by ten percent.
Key Takeaways
Start from placement: a direct theme goes into a container with بـ, onto a surface with عـ, or beside/under/behind a reference point. From there, حطّ extends naturally to ingredients, data, settings, applied products, and a limited set of mental frames. Treat حطّ ببالك، حطّ حالك محلّه، حطّ الحقّ على, and حطّ عجنب as established packages. English put phrasal verbs and general clothing uses require their own Lebanese verbs.
