Lebanese على ʿa / ʿala links an item to a supporting surface, a destination, a responsibility, or the target of a lexically selected relation. Its everyday connected form is often short: عالطاولة “on the table,” عالشغل “to work.” Romanization reflects that Lebanese pronunciation.
English on, to, and about are clues, not rules. Learn the relation and the verb frame together. Compare its spatial range with في.
Physical support and contact
The clearest use places something on a supporting surface.
حط القهوة عالطاولة حد الشباك.
ḥoṭṭ el-ʾahwe ʿaṭ-ṭāwle ḥadd esh-shobbēk.
Put the coffee on the table by the window. (surface support)
الصورة معلقة عالحيط فوق الكنباية.
eṣ-ṣūra mʿallaʾa ʿal-ḥīṭ fawʾ el-kanabēye.
The picture is hanging on the wall above the sofa. (contact/support)
الكتاب بالشنطة، مش عليها.
el-ktēb bish-shanṭa, mish ʿalēya.
The book is in the bag, not on it. (container versus surface; suffix)
Destination and movement
With common motion expressions, على marks a destination: راح عالشغل، طلع عالجبل، رجع عالبيت. Bare لـ may instead highlight direction or recipient-like endpoint, but these collocations are lexical and regional.
بعد الفطور رح نطلع عالجبل.
baʿd el-fṭūr raḥ niṭlaʿ ʿal-zhabal.
After breakfast we'll head up to the mountains. (destination)
وصلت عالمكتب قبل المدير بعشر دقايق.
wiṣelt ʿal-maktab ʾabel el-mdīr b-ʿashar daʾāyeʾ.
I reached the office ten minutes before the manager. (motion endpoint)
Ask عوين؟ or لوين؟ according to the construction and speaker. This guide uses لوين as the transparent general endpoint question and preserves على in the answer.
Responsibility and burden
على also marks whose responsibility, turn, debt, or burden something is. The most frequent forms are suffixed.
الحساب عليي هالمرة؛ إنت دفعت المرة الماضية.
el-ḥsēb ʿalayye hal-marra; inte dfaʿet el-marra l-māḍye.
The bill is on me this time; you paid last time. (responsibility)
عليه يسلم المفاتيح قبل الجمعة.
ʿalē ysallem el-mafātīḥ ʾabel el-zhomʿa.
He has to hand over the keys before Friday. (obligation-like frame)
الدور عليكن تختاروا المطعم.
ed-dawr ʿalēkon tikhtāro l-maṭʿam.
It's your turn to choose the restaurant. (plural responsibility)
This obligation-like pattern is not a universal substitute for لازم. It presents the duty as resting on someone; لازم simply marks necessity.
Topic and lexical frames
Some verbs select على for their target or topic: وافق على “agree to,” رد على “answer/respond to,” علّق على “comment on,” اعتمد على “depend on.” Other “about” verbs take عن, so English cannot choose for you.
المدير وافق على الخطة الجديدة.
el-mdīr wāfaʾ ʿala l-khoṭṭa l-zhdīde.
The manager agreed to the new plan. (lexical frame وافق على)
ما رد عليي لما سألته عن الموعد.
ma radd ʿalayye lamma saʾalto ʿan el-mawʿed.
He didn't answer me when I asked him about the appointment. (رد على versus سأل عن)
علقت على الصورة، مش على النص.
ʿallaʾet ʿala ṣ-ṣūra, mish ʿala n-naṣṣ.
I commented on the picture, not the text. (topic/target contrast)
Suffixed forms
The suffix base is عليـ: عليي، عليك، عليه، عليها، علينا، عليكن، عليهن. The vowels are not obtained by mechanically attaching a pronoun to the short spoken عـ. In the Beirut production model used here, written ه is silent after the long vowel and a glide can surface: عليه ʿalē, عليها ʿalēya, عليهن ʿalēyon. An audible h is a legitimate careful-speech recognition variant.
هالمعلومة جديدة عليي، بدي وقت إفهمها.
hal-maʿlūme zhdīde ʿalayye, badde waʾet ifhama.
This information is new to me; I need time to understand it. (first-person suffix)
اتكلنا عليهن بالتنظيم وما خيبوا أملنا.
ittakalna ʿalēyon bit-tanẓīm w-ma khayyabo amalna.
We relied on them for the organization, and they didn't disappoint us. (plural suffix)

Common Mistakes
❌ الكتاب بالطاولة.
Wrong relation for a book resting on the surface — locative بـ does not mark support/contact.
✅ الكتاب عالطاولة حد القهوة.
el-ktēb ʿaṭ-ṭāwle ḥadd el-ʾahwe.
The book is on the table next to the coffee.
❌ مين رديت على؟
Incorrect English-style stranding.
✅ على مين رديت أول شي؟
ʿala mīn raddēt awwal she?
Who did you answer first?
❌ الحساب على أنا.
Incorrect — على takes its irregular first-person suffixed form.
✅ الحساب عليي اليوم، بلا نقاش.
el-ḥsēb ʿalayye l-yōm, bla niʾēsh.
The bill is on me today, no argument.
Key Takeaways
Use على for support/contact, many destinations, responsibility, and specific lexical targets. Its suffix base is عليـ, not the short connected عـ. Contrast بالشنطة “in the bag” with عالشنطة “on the bag,” keep prepositions before question words, and memorize verb frames such as وافق على and رد على.
