Urban Beirut Lebanese uses عم + b-imperfect to show an event as ongoing: عم بكتب “I am writing,” عم بتشتغلي “you are working,” عم بيحكوا “they are talking.” عم supplies the progressive viewpoint, while the imperfect verb still marks person, gender, number, and any attached object.
Many Lebanese and northern-Levantine speakers also use عم + bare imperfect, such as عم اكتب or عم يكتب (regional/social variation). This guide teaches stable Beirut-baseline عم بكتب for production and the bare variant for recognition.
Review the ordinary agreement base in The b-Imperfect; عم adds viewpoint without replacing that person system.
The focused Beirut paradigm
With regular كتب / بيكتب “write,” عم stays unchanged and the b-imperfect carries agreement:
| Person | Progressive | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| I | عم بكتب | ʿam biktob |
| you masculine | عم بتكتب | ʿam btiktob |
| you feminine | عم بتكتبي | ʿam btiktbe |
| he | عم بيكتب | ʿam byiktob |
| she | عم بتكتب | ʿam btiktob |
| we | عم منكتب | ʿam mniktob |
| you plural | عم بتكتبوا | ʿam btiktbo |
| they | عم بيكتبوا | ʿam byiktbo |
In the first-person plural, the ordinary b-series marker surfaces as مـ before نـ: منكتبmniktob. It is not bare نكتب, and it is not mechanically built as بنكتب.
عم بكتب رسالة للمدير.
ʿam biktob risēle lal-mdīr.
I'm writing a message to the manager. (informal; first-person Beirut progressive)
إنتي عم بتكتبي الملاحظات؟
inte ʿam btiktbe l-malāḥaẓāt?
Are you writing the notes? (informal; one female addressee)
هني عم بيكتبوا التقرير سوا.
hinne ʿam byiktbo t-taʾrīr sawa.
They're writing the report together. (informal; plural agreement)
Right-now events are the clearest use
Time expressions such as هلق “now” and visible context strongly favor the progressive when an action is unfolding.
هلق عم بشرب قهوة، بدك شي؟
hallaʾ ʿam bishrab ʾahwe, baddak she?
I'm having coffee now; do you want anything? (informal; current activity)
ما فيني إحكي، عم بسوق.
ma fīne iḥke, ʿam bsūʾ.
I can't talk; I'm driving. (informal; action in progress explains the refusal)
English sometimes uses a simple present for live commentary—“I open the file now”—but Lebanese normally uses the progressive when the event is genuinely underway, unless a historical-present or instructional frame licenses a b-form.
The event can extend beyond this exact second
Progressive viewpoint can cover a bounded current period: this week, this semester, or these days. The learner need not be performing the action at the instant of speaking.
هالسنة عم بدرس هندسة بالجامعة.
has-sane ʿam bidros handase bil-zhēmʿa.
This year I'm studying engineering at university. (informal; extended ongoing period)
هالفترة عم مندور على بيت أقرب عالشغل.
hal-fatre ʿam mndawwer ʿala bēt aʾrab ʿa-sh-shoghol.
These days we're looking for a place closer to work. (informal; temporary ongoing project)
The progressive presents the interval as limited or developing. A plain b-imperfect may instead make studying or house-hunting sound like an ordinary activity or characteristic pattern.
Subject placement follows information structure
An established subject commonly precedes the progressive: رنا عم بتشتغل. In presentational structures, the noun may introduce a new participant before a progressive modifier: في حدا عم بينطر “someone is waiting.” Postverbal subjects also occur in marked focus, but beginners should use subject + عم + verb when the subject is known.
رنا عم بتشتغل من البيت اليوم.
Rana ʿam btishtaghel min el-bēt el-yōm.
Rana is working from home today. (informal; established subject first)
في حدا عم بينطر عند الباب.
fī ḥada ʿam byinṭor ʿind el-bēb.
Someone is waiting at the door. (informal; presentational indefinite subject)
Object and preposition clitics attach to the verb
عم remains a separate particle. Object pronouns and prepositional suffixes attach where the lexical frame requires them: عم بكتبها “I'm writing it,” عم بحكيله “I'm telling him,” عم بفكر فيه “I'm thinking about it.”
عم بكتبلك العنوان عالواتساب.
ʿam biktoblak el-ʿonwēn ʿa-l-Wātsāb.
I'm writing the address to you on WhatsApp. (informal; recipient clitic attaches to the verb)
عم بفكر فيه من مبارح.
ʿam bfakker fīh min mbēreḥ.
I've been thinking about it since yesterday. (informal; prepositional complement remains on فيه)
Never attach the clitic to عم. The particle contributes aspect, not argument structure.
Negation comes before عم
Neutral progressive negation is ما عم + b-imperfect in the Beirut baseline. The person and object marking remain on the verb.
عم بسمعك منيح.
ʿam bismaʿak mnīḥ.
I can hear you clearly. (informal; affirmative progressive in a live call)
ما عم بسمعك منيح، الصوت عم بيقطع.
ma ʿam bismaʿak mnīḥ, eṣ-ṣōt ʿam byʾaṭṭeʿ.
I can't hear you clearly; the sound keeps cutting out. (informal; negative progressive and repeated ongoing disruption)
This use of a perception verb is licensed by the live, changing connection. A stable ability or state normally takes the b-imperfect without عم.
Stative verbs resist a plain progressive reading
Verbs meaning know, understand, want, own, or like often describe a state rather than an internally unfolding event. Use بعرف الجواب “I know the answer,” not ordinary عم بعرف الجواب. A stative verb can enter the progressive when context forces a dynamic development or repeated behavior.
بعرف وين المفتاح.
baʿrif wēn el-miftēḥ.
I know where the key is. (informal; stable state, plain b-imperfect)
عم بفهم الفكرة شوي شوي.
ʿam bfham el-fikra shwayy shwayy.
I'm gradually understanding the idea. (informal; dynamic change makes progressive possible)
There is no purely mechanical list. The same lexical verb may be stative in one context and developmental in another; the progressive contributes a viewpoint, not a new dictionary meaning.
A dialogue contrasting habit and now
عادة بتشتغل بالمكتب؟
ʿāde btishtaghel bil-maktab?
Nour: Do you usually work at the office? (informal dialogue; habitual b-imperfect)
إيه، بس اليوم عم بشتغل من البيت.
ē, bass el-yōm ʿam bishtaghel min el-bēt.
Sami: Yes, but today I'm working from home. (informal dialogue; temporary progressive)
وشو عم بتعمل هلق؟
w-shū ʿam btiʿmal hallaʾ?
Nour: And what are you doing now? (informal dialogue; current progressive)
عم بحضر الاجتماع أونلاين.
ʿam biḥḍar el-izhtimēʿ ōnlāyn.
Sami: I'm attending the meeting online. (informal dialogue; borrowed adverb in ordinary professional speech)
Common Mistakes
Removing both b- and person marking
❌ هلق عم كتب التقرير.
Incorrect — even the real عم + bare variant keeps an agreeing imperfect prefix: عم اكتب, not root-like كتب.
✅ هلق عم بكتب التقرير.
hallaʾ ʿam biktob et-taʾrīr.
I'm writing the report now. (Beirut production baseline)
Putting the agreement on عم
❌ بعم تكتبوا التقرير.
Incorrect — عم is invariant; agreement stays on the following b-imperfect.
✅ عم بتكتبوا التقرير.
ʿam btiktbo t-taʾrīr.
You all are writing the report.
Attaching the object to the particle
❌ عمه بكتب.
Incorrect for ‘I'm writing it’ — the object clitic attaches to the lexical verb.
✅ عم بكتبه.
ʿam biktobo.
I'm writing it.
Forcing a stable state into the progressive
❌ عم بعرف وين ساكن.
Unnatural for the stable meaning ‘I know where he lives.’
✅ بعرف وين ساكن.
baʿrif wēn sēken.
I know where he lives.
Key Takeaways
The Beirut production baseline builds the progressive with invariant عم plus a fully agreeing b-imperfect. It covers events unfolding now and bounded projects extending across a current period. Subjects follow ordinary information structure, clitics attach to the lexical verb, and ما precedes عم. Stable states prefer a plain b-form, while dynamic or developing readings can license the progressive; عم + bare imperfect remains a labeled regional/social alternative.
