Choosing عم Progressive or b-Imperfect

The core choice is viewpoint: use the plain b-imperfect to present a habit, state, characteristic, or ordinary predication; use Beirut-baseline عم + b-imperfect to place the listener inside an event or a limited current phase. بشتغل من البيت means “I work from home,” while عم بشتغل من البيت اليوم means “I'm working from home today.”

English simple versus progressive forms offer a useful first comparison, but the systems do not line up perfectly. Lebanese can make temporary repeated patterns progressive, uses plain b-forms for many live states, and has performative b-verbs whose utterance itself carries out an act.

For the form itself before making this choice, review عم plus Imperfect for Ongoing Events.

The quick decision

Meaning intendedChooseExample
activity visibly unfolding nowعم + b-imperfectعم بيكتب هلق
ordinary or repeated habitb-imperfectبيكتب كل يوم
stable state or knowledgeb-imperfectبيعرف الجواب
bounded project during a current periodعم + b-imperfectعم بيكتب كتاب هالسنة
temporary repeated patternoften عم + b-imperfectعم بيروح تلات مرات بالأسبوع هالفترة
performative utteranceoften b-imperfectبوعدك

This is a meaning choice, not a tense-conversion formula. The time adverb, lexical verb, and discourse context all contribute.

💡
Ask whether you are describing the participant's normal pattern or opening a temporary window onto what is unfolding. Normal pattern favors b-; an open current window favors عم + b-.

Right now: choose عم progressive

For an event in progress at the speaking moment, عم + b-imperfect is the clearest Beirut form.

هلق عم بحكي مع الزبون، بدقلك بعدين.

hallaʾ ʿam biḥke maʿ ez-zabūn, bdoʾʾlak baʿdēn.

I'm talking to the customer now; I'll call you later. (informal; current ongoing event)

الولاد عم بيلعبوا برا.

el-wlēd ʿam byilʿabo barra.

The kids are playing outside. (informal; visible ongoing activity)

A plain بحكي مع الزبون more readily describes whom someone deals with, what language they speak, or a habitual pattern. It can receive a present translation, but it does not itself force an in-progress viewpoint.

Habits and characteristic activities: choose b-imperfect

Frequency phrases such as كل يوم، عادة، دايما ordinarily combine with the b-imperfect when the speaker presents a regular pattern.

عادة بشرب قهوة بعد الغدا.

ʿāde bishrab ʾahwe baʿd el-ghada.

I usually drink coffee after lunch. (informal habit)

رنا بتروح عالجامعة بالباص كل يوم.

Rana btrūḥ ʿa-l-zhēmʿa bil-bāṣ kill yōm.

Rana goes to university by bus every day. (informal characteristic routine)

English sometimes uses its progressive for irritation—“He's always losing his keys.” Lebanese can also create a marked ongoing/repeated reading with عم, but do not replace every frequency phrase mechanically. Neutral routine remains the b-form.

States normally take the b-imperfect

Knowing, understanding, wanting, liking, and possessing are usually construed as states rather than unfolding activities. They therefore prefer ordinary b-forms.

بعرف الجواب، بس ما بعرف كيف إشرحه.

baʿrif el-zhawēb, bass ma baʿrif kēf ishraḥo.

I know the answer, but I don't know how to explain it. (informal; stable knowledge state)

هي بتحب القهوة سادة.

hiyye btiḥebb el-ʾahwe sēde.

She likes her coffee black. (informal; stable preference)

The progressive becomes possible if context creates genuine development: عم بفهم الفكرة شوي شوي “I'm gradually understanding the idea.” With preferences, عم بحب هالشغل أكتر كل يوم can present affection as growing. The lexical state has been recast as a change.

💡
A stative verb is not banned from عم forever. It needs a coerced dynamic reading—growth, change, repeated behavior, or active experience—not merely present time.

Temporary repeated patterns can be progressive

The progressive is not limited to one uninterrupted event. It can package a series of repeated events as a temporary pattern during a bounded current phase.

كل صيف بشتغل بهالمطعم.

kill ṣēf bishtaghel bi-hal-maṭʿam.

Every summer I work at this restaurant. (informal; established recurring habit)

هالفترة عم بشتغل بهالمطعم تلات أيام بالأسبوع.

hal-fatre ʿam bishtaghel bi-hal-maṭʿam tlēt ayyēm bil-osbūʿ.

These days I'm working at this restaurant three days a week. (informal; temporary repeated arrangement)

هالفترة عم بروح عالعلاج مرتين بالأسبوع.

hal-fatre ʿam brūḥ ʿa-l-ʿilēzh marrtēn bil-osbūʿ.

These days I'm going to therapy twice a week. (informal; repeated events inside a limited current phase)

The frequency expression does not automatically force a habit. هالفترة tells the listener that the pattern is temporary; عم presents it from inside that phase.

Extended projects also use the progressive

An event can be ongoing at the scale of a month or year even when nobody is performing it every second.

عم منجهز مكتب جديد بالشركة.

ʿam mnzhahhez maktab zhdīd bish-shirke.

We're setting up a new office at the company. (neutral/professional; extended ongoing project)

هالسنة عم بكتب بحث عن النقل العام.

has-sane ʿam biktob baḥs ʿan en-naʾl el-ʿāmm.

This year I'm writing a study on public transportation. (neutral/academic discussion; bounded project)

Plain بكتب أبحاث عن النقل العام would instead characterize the speaker's regular work: “I write studies on public transportation.”

Performative b-verbs do an act by being said

Some first-person b-imperfect forms can carry out a speech act at the moment of utterance. بوعدك is “I promise you”; بعتذر is “I apologize.” Their present relevance does not require عم because the utterance itself performs a bounded social act.

بوعدك إني ما رح إتأخر عن الموعد.

bwaʿdak inne ma raḥ itʾakhkhar ʿan el-mawʿed.

I promise you I won't be late for the appointment. (informal performative promise)

بعتذر عن التأخير.

baʿtizer ʿan et-taʾkhīr.

I apologize for the delay. (neutral/professional performative)

عم بوعد or عم بعتذر is possible when the speaker describes an ongoing or repeated act rather than simply performing it: صارلي ساعة عم بعتذر “I've been apologizing for an hour.” The aspect shift changes the discourse purpose.

Context can leave both forms possible

The question شو بتعمل؟ can ask what someone does for work or habitually. شو عم بتعمل؟ asks what they are doing now or during the current phase. With no explicit time phrase, shared context decides the scale.

شو بتعمل بالشركة؟

shū btiʿmal bish-shirke?

What do you do at the company? (informal; role or regular activity)

شو عم بتعمل بهالمشروع؟

shū ʿam btiʿmal bi-hal-mashrūʿ?

What are you working on in this project? (informal; current involvement)

The second question need not mean “this exact second.” The project supplies a limited current frame.

Negation preserves the distinction

Negate a habit or state with ما + b-imperfect. Negate an ongoing event with ما عم + b-imperfect.

ما بشتغل نهار الأحد.

ma bishtaghel nhār el-aḥad.

I don't work on Sundays. (informal; negative habit)

ما عم بشتغل اليوم لأنو تعبان.

ma ʿam bishtaghel el-yōm laʾanno taʿbēn.

I'm not working today because I'm tired. (informal; temporary negative progressive)

The contrast is not affirmative versus negative; both constructions have ordinary negative forms.

A dialogue with a temporary schedule

بعدك بتروح عالمكتب كل يوم؟

baʿdak btrūḥ ʿa-l-maktab kill yōm?

Maya: Do you still go to the office every day? (informal dialogue; ordinary habit)

لأ، هالفترة عم بروح تلات أيام بس.

laʾ, hal-fatre ʿam brūḥ tlēt ayyēm bass.

Karim: No, these days I'm only going three days. (informal dialogue; temporary repeated pattern)

واليوم عم بتشتغل من البيت؟

w-el-yōm ʿam btishtaghel min el-bēt?

Maya: And are you working from home today? (informal dialogue; right-now/current-day progressive)

إيه، عم بحضر اجتماع من البيت هلق.

ē, ʿam biḥḍar izhtimēʿ min el-bēt hallaʾ.

Karim: Yes, I'm attending a meeting from home right now. (informal dialogue; current event)

Common Mistakes

Using a plain b-form for a right-now activity

❌ هلق بكتب إيميل.

Misleading for the intended event underway now — the plain b-form does not explicitly open a progressive window.

✅ هلق عم بكتب إيميل.

hallaʾ ʿam biktob īmēl.

I'm writing an email now.

Using عم for a stable state

❌ عم بعرف رنا من زمان.

Unnatural for stable acquaintance — knowing someone is a state here.

✅ بعرف رنا من زمان.

baʿrif Rana min zamēn.

I've known Rana for a long time.

Combining عم with a perfect form

❌ هالفترة عم رحت عالمستشفى مرتين بالأسبوع.

Incorrect — عم selects an imperfect form, not perfect رحت, even when the pattern contains completed visits.

✅ هالفترة عم بروح عالمستشفى مرتين بالأسبوع.

hal-fatre ʿam brūḥ ʿa-l-mistashfa marrtēn bil-osbūʿ.

These days I'm going to the hospital twice a week.

Adding عم to a simple performative

❌ عم بوعدك إني إجي بكير.

Marked for a one-time promise — عم portrays promising as an ongoing process, and the embedded verb also needs its proper modal frame.

✅ بوعدك إني رح إجي بكير.

bwaʿdak inne raḥ izhe bkīr.

I promise you I'll come early.

Key Takeaways

Choose the b-imperfect for ordinary habits, characteristic activities, states, and performative speech acts. Choose Beirut عم + b-imperfect for events unfolding now, extended current projects, and repeated patterns construed as temporary phases. Negation keeps the same contrast. Lexical meaning and context can shift the choice, so do not translate English simple and progressive forms one to one.
