Negating عم Progressive Clauses

To deny an activity in progress, the Beirut baseline places ما before the complete عم + b-imperfect construction: عم بكتب “I am writing” → ما عم بكتب “I am not writing.” The negation has wide scope over the unfolding event; it does not sit between عم and the verb.

Approved pages in this guide consistently teach Lebanese عم + b-imperfect. Bare forms after عم occur as (regional/social variation), but learners should produce the b-form unless they are deliberately matching a community that omits it. The affirmative system is developed in progressive versus b-imperfect.

The construction across persons

ما and عم are invariant. Person and number appear on the imperfect verb.

PersonAffirmativeNegativeReading

ana ʿam baʾra r-risēle hallaʾ.

I'm reading the message now. (affirmative progressive)

ana ma ʿam baʾra t-taʿlīʾāt laʾanne ʿam basūʾ.

I'm not reading the comments because I'm driving. (negative then affirmative progressive)

hinne ʿam byizhahhzo l-ghorfe laḍ-ḍyūf.

They're preparing the room for the guests. (affirmative plural)

hinne ma ʿam byighayyro l-athēth; ʿam byinaḍḍfū bass.

They aren't changing the furniture; they're only cleaning it. (corrective progressive)

💡
Treat ما عم بيكتب as one layered predicate: ما denies it, عم gives an inside view, and بيكتب carries person. Do not reorder the layers.

Current-event denial versus a negative habit

Compare ما عم بشتغل اليوم “I'm not working today/at the moment” with ما بشتغل نهار الجمعة “I don't work Fridays.” Removing عم changes viewpoint, not simply style.

Rana ma ʿam btrudd ʿat-tilifōn hallaʾ.

Rana isn't answering the phone right now. (one current situation)

Rana ma btrudd ʿa-arʾām ma btiʿrafa.

Rana doesn't answer numbers she doesn't know. (habitual policy)

Some English statives do not map neatly. مش عارف presents a current state of not knowing. ما عم بفهم is natural when understanding is treated dynamically: “I'm not getting it.” The choice is about viewpoint, not an absolute list copied from English.

ana mish ʿāref mīn baʿat el-malaf, w-ma ʿam bafham lēsh ismo tghayyar.

I don't know who sent the file, and I can't make sense of why its name changed. (state versus ongoing failure to understand)

Subjects, objects, and corrective stress

An established subject usually precedes the negative complex: Pronouns are omitted unless contrasted. Attached objects remain on the verb.

The manager can't hear us well through this microphone. (ongoing perceptual problem plus object clitic)

I'm not talking about the price; I'm talking about the quality. (corrective stress on the complement)

To narrow scope, Lebanese normally denies the broad activity and then supplies the corrected detail. A constituent alone can also take مش: عم بحكي معه، مش عنها “I'm talking with him, not about her.”

💡
A time expression is not enough by itself to force the progressive. Use عم when you view the activity from inside; use the b-imperfect when you describe a routine, policy, or general tendency.

mish killon ʿam byishtighlo min el-bēt; tlēte bil-maktab.

Not all of them are working from home; three are at the office. (quantifier scope)

killon ma ʿam byishtighlo min el-bēt; killon bil-maktab.

None of them is working from home; they're all at the office. (universal subject outside progressive negation)

In مش كلن..., negation scopes over the universal: “not all.” In كلن ما عم..., the universal subject has wider scope and the negative progressive applies to every member: “none.” The explicit continuations make those readings clear in ordinary conversation.

Dialogue: correcting the current scene

lēsh ma ʿam btḥaḍḍro ṭ-ṭāwle? eḍ-ḍyūf wiṣlo.

Dima: Why aren't you setting the table? The guests have arrived. (negative progressive question)

ʿam mniḥaḍḍera, bass ma ʿam mniḥoṭṭ eṣ-ṣḥūn hallaʾ.

Tala: We are setting it, but we aren't putting out the plates yet. (partial correction)

shū ʿam btiʿmalo awwal she?

Dima: What are you doing first? (progressive information question)

Tala: We're widening the entrance because the chairs aren't fitting through. (two unfolding situations)

Regional negative circumfixes with -ش occur elsewhere in the Levant (regional: Palestine/Jordan). They are not added to this Beirut pattern.

Common Mistakes

Incorrect for the intended ‘I'm not writing it right now’ — without عم, this defaults toward a habit or general non-event.

ma ʿam baktob et-taʾrīr hallaʾ; ʿam barodd ʿal-īmēlāt.

I'm not writing the report now; I'm answering emails.

Incorrect — ما precedes the whole عم progressive complex.

ma ʿam byiṣalliḥo l-barrēd; ʿam byifḥaṣo l-kahraba.

They aren't repairing the fridge; they're checking the electricity.

Non-neutral for basic verbal negation in this course — use ما before the finite progressive complex.

hiyye ma ʿam btḥake maʿ ez-zabūn; ʿam btḥake maʿ el-mdīr.

She isn't talking with the customer; she's talking with the manager.

Incorrect in the intended current-state reading — عارف is a participle and takes مش.

ana mish ʿāref el-zhawēb, bass ʿam badawwer ʿalē.

I don't know the answer, but I'm looking for it.

Key Takeaways

For Beirut production, negate an unfolding event with ما عم + b-imperfect. The verb retains person marking and clitics; ما and عم stay invariant. Contrast ما عم بشتغل “not working now” with habitual ما بشتغل and stative/participial مش شغال. Put ما before the complete progressive, and use explicit corrections to show narrow scope.
