Use the plain b-imperfect to present a habit, characteristic, state, schedule, or ordinary fact. Use Beirut-baseline عم + b-imperfect to open a limited window and show an event or phase from inside it. بشتغل من البيت says “I work from home”; عم بشتغل من البيت هالأسبوع says “I'm working from home this week.”
English simple present versus present progressive is a useful first clue, but it is not the rule. Lebanese can put repeated events inside a temporary عم frame, normally leaves stable states in the b-imperfect, and uses b-forms for present-time speech acts such as بوعدك “I promise you.” Choose a viewpoint, not an English tense label.
For formation and full agreement, use the b-imperfect and عم plus imperfect; this page focuses only on the choice.
Decision tree
- Is the action visibly or audibly unfolding now? Use عم + b-imperfect.
- Is it an extended project or temporary pattern in the current period? Usually use عم + b-imperfect.
- Is it a regular habit, stable state, characteristic, or schedule? Use the plain b-imperfect.
- Is the utterance itself performing an act—promising, apologizing, thanking? The plain b-imperfect is normally enough.
- Could either viewpoint fit? Let the time phrase and conversational question decide whether the speaker means a normal pattern or the present phase.
Minimal pair 1: ordinary work versus this week's arrangement
عادة بشتغل من البيت نهار التلاتا والخميس.
ʿāde bishtaghel min el-bēt nhār et-tlēta w-el-khamīs.
I usually work from home on Tuesday and Thursday. (informal; established routine)
عم بشتغل من البيت هالأسبوع لأنو المكتب مسكر.
ʿam bishtaghel min el-bēt hal-osbūʿ laʾanno l-maktab msakkar.
I'm working from home this week because the office is closed. (informal; temporary current arrangement)
Both involve several work sessions. عم does not require an uninterrupted activity; it packages the sessions as one temporary phase.
Minimal pair 2: reading habit versus event in progress
رنا بتقرأ قبل ما تنام.
Rana btʾra ʾabel ma tnēm.
Rana reads before she goes to sleep. (informal; habit)
رنا عم بتقرأ بالصالون هلق.
Rana ʿam btʾra biṣ-ṣālōn hallaʾ.
Rana is reading in the living room now. (informal; event in progress)
The lexical activity is identical. The first sentence characterizes Rana's routine; the second locates the listener inside one occurrence.
Minimal pair 3: ordinary understanding versus developing understanding
States such as knowing, understanding, liking, and wanting usually take the plain b-imperfect because they hold rather than unfold. عم becomes possible when context recasts the state as change or active development.
بفهم عليك، بس ما بوافقك.
bafham ʿalēk, bass ma bwāfʾak.
I understand you, but I don't agree with you. (informal; current mental state)
عم بفهم الفكرة شوي شوي.
ʿam bafham el-fikra shwayy shwayy.
I'm gradually understanding the idea. (informal; developing comprehension)
The progressive does not simply mean “understand right now.” شوي شوي supplies a genuine path of change.
Temporary repetition versus a habit
Frequency expressions do not mechanically select the b-imperfect. كل يوم can describe a permanent routine or repeated episodes inside a short-lived current problem.
كل يوم باخد الباص عالشغل.
kill yōm bākhod el-bāṣ ʿash-shoghol.
I take the bus to work every day. (informal; normal habit)
هالفترة عم باخد تاكسي كل يوم لأنو سيارتي بالتصليح.
hal-fatre ʿam bākhod tākse kill yōm laʾanno sayyārte bit-taṣlīḥ.
These days I'm taking a taxi every day because my car is being repaired. (informal; temporary repeated pattern)
This is one of the places where “habit = b-” is too crude. The deeper contrast is an established characterization versus a bounded phase.
Extended projects count as ongoing
Nobody works on a project every second, yet the project can be open and developing across weeks or months. That larger event window licenses عم.
هالسنة عم منجهز فرع جديد للشركة.
has-sane ʿam mnzhahhez farʿ zhdīd lish-shirke.
This year we're preparing a new branch for the company. (professional; extended current project)
Plain منجهز فروع جديدة would more naturally describe what the team regularly does. The duration does not decide by itself; the speaker's bounded-project construal does.
Performatives prefer the plain b-form
Some first-person b-forms perform an act as they are uttered. بوعدك makes a promise; بعتذر delivers an apology. The act is present, but it is not being viewed as an activity in progress.
بوعدك إني رح ابعتلك الجواب قبل الظهر.
bwaʿdak inne raḥ ibʿatlak el-zhawēb ʾabel eẓ-ẓoher.
I promise that I'll send you the answer before noon. (informal performative)
صارلي ساعة عم بعتذر من الزبون عن التأخير.
ṣārle sēʿa ʿam baʿtizer min ez-zabūn ʿan et-taʾkhīr.
I've been apologizing to the customer for an hour about the delay. (informal; repeated/extended apologizing activity)
The first sentence performs one promise. The second describes an ongoing series of apologies, so عم is justified.
Negation preserves the viewpoint
Use ما + b-imperfect for a negative habit or state and ما عم + b-imperfect for an event or phase not currently occurring.
ما بشرب قهوة بعد المغرب.
ma bishrab ʾahwe baʿd el-maghreb.
I don't drink coffee after sunset. (informal; negative habit)
ما عم بشرب قهوة هالأيام كرمال نومي.
ma ʿam bishrab ʾahwe hal-ayyēm kirmēl nawme.
I'm not drinking coffee these days because of my sleep. (informal; temporary abstention)
Negation does not cancel the contrast. For the form, see negating the progressive.
An ambiguous case resolved by context
شو بتعمل؟ can mean “what do you do?” or, in a tightly established sequence, “what do you do next?” شو عم بتعمل؟ explicitly asks about the action or project inside the current window.
شو بتعمل بالمستشفى؟
shū btiʿmal bil-mistashfa?
What do you do at the hospital? (informal; asks about role or regular work)
شو عم بتعمل بالمستشفى اليوم؟
shū ʿam btiʿmal bil-mistashfa l-yōm?
What are you doing at the hospital today? (informal; asks about today's situation)
Without اليوم, physical surroundings can still supply the current frame. A telephone call to someone heard in a hospital makes the progressive reading available; a first-meeting question about employment favors the plain b-form.
Regional recognition
This guide's production form is عم + b-imperfect: عم بكتب، عم بتشتغلي، عم بيحكوا. عم + bare imperfect also occurs among Lebanese and northern-Levantine speakers (regional/social variation). Southern Levantine varieties can distribute progressive marking differently. Do not treat the variants as separate meanings, and do not silently blend their morphology inside one production paradigm.
Common Mistakes
Choosing solely from the English translation
❌ هلق بكتب رسالة للمدير.
Misleading for an event visibly underway now — the plain b-form does not open that progressive window.
✅ هلق عم بكتب رسالة للمدير.
hallaʾ ʿam biktob risēle lal-mdīr.
I'm writing a message to the manager now.
Using عم for every present-time state
❌ عم بعرف هالعيلة من زمان.
Unnatural for stable acquaintance — no developing or temporary reading licenses عم.
✅ بعرف هالعيلة من أكتر من عشر سنين.
baʿref hal-ʿayle min aktar min ʿashar snīn.
I've known this family for more than ten years.
Assuming frequency always blocks the progressive
❌ كل يوم يعني لازم استعمل بس الـب.
Incorrect rule — repetition can be packaged as a temporary current phase.
✅ هالشهر عم بتمرن كل يوم للسباق.
hash-shaher ʿam bitmarran kill yōm lis-sibēʾ.
This month I'm training every day for the race.
Dropping b- after عم in the course baseline
❌ نحنا عم نجهز الغرفة.
A recognized northern variant, but not the stable Beirut production pattern taught here.
✅ نحنا عم منجهز الغرفة للضيوف.
niḥna ʿam mnzhahhez el-ghorfe laḍ-ḍyūf.
We're preparing the room for the guests. (Beirut production baseline)
Key Takeaways
Choose the plain b-imperfect for ordinary habits, characteristics, schedules, stable states, and simple performatives. Choose عم + b-imperfect for an unfolding event, an extended open project, or repeated events inside a bounded current phase. Time words guide but do not mechanically decide the choice; lexical aspect, discourse context, and the viewpoint the speaker wants are decisive.
