Beirut عم ʿam opens a progressive viewpoint: it places the listener inside an event or temporary phase. The course baseline is عم + b-imperfect: عم بكتب “I'm writing,” عم بيشتغلوا “they're working.” عم is invariant; the verb carries person and number.
Some speakers and neighboring varieties omit b- after عم (regional/social variation). Approved pages in this course consistently produce the Beirut b-form; compare the full viewpoint contrast.
Progressive placement and agreement
ʿam biktob el-mlāḥaẓāt hallaʾ.
I'm writing the notes now. (ongoing event)
Rana ʿam btḥaḍḍer el-ʾahwe laḍ-ḍyūf.
Rana is preparing coffee for the guests. (3fs agreement)
hinne ʿam byinʾolo l-karāse ʿal-ghorfe l-kbīre.
They're moving the chairs to the large room. (plural agreement)
With and without عم
Without عم, a b-form often describes a habit, role, state, or ordinary pattern. With عم, it presents a current event or bounded temporary phase.
bishtighel min el-bēt nhār el-zhomʿa.
I work from home on Fridays. (habit)
ʿam bishtighel min el-bēt hal-usbūʿ laʾann el-maktab msakkar.
I'm working from home this week because the office is closed. (temporary phase)
shū btiʿmal bish-sharike?
What do you do at the company? (role)
shū ʿam btiʿmal b-hal-malaf?
What are you doing with this file? (current activity)
The progressive can contain repeated events if the whole pattern is temporary: هالفترة عم بروح مرتين بالأسبوع.
Subject placement and scope
An established subject often precedes عم. A post-particle noun can be introduced or contrastively focused in speech, though pronouns normally remain omitted unless contrasted.
ʿam byishraḥ el-istēz, wiṭ-ṭollēb ʿam byiktbo.
The teacher is explaining, and the students are writing. (scene-setting then topic-first)
ana ʿam baḥke ʿan el-kilfe, mish ʿan el-waʾet.
I'm talking about the cost, not the time. (contrastive subject and narrow correction)
Negation and rapid speech
Put ما before the whole construction: ما عم بكتب. Do not insert it after عم. In quick speech, عم clings prosodically to the b-form, but ordinary spelling keeps it separate.
ma ʿam bismaʿak mnīḥ; ʾarreb ʿat-tilifōn.
I can't hear you well; move closer to the phone. (negative progressive)
ʿam baʾūlak inno ṭ-ṭarīʾ msakkara, mish ʿam basʾalak.
I'm telling you the road is closed; I'm not asking you. (stance contrast through event type)
Interactional uses
Because عم makes an action live and current, speakers use it to manage the conversation: عم قولك insists “I'm telling you,” شو عم تعمل؟ can challenge behavior, and عم بمزح frames an utterance as joking. These are progressive clauses with discourse force, not unrelated dictionary meanings.
ma tizʿal, ʿam bamzaḥ maʿak.
Don't get upset; I'm joking with you. (interactional framing)
shū ʿam btiʿmal? razhzheʿ el-waraʾa maṭraḥa.
What are you doing? Put the paper back. (challenging an ongoing action)
Dialogue
lēsh ma ʿam btrudd ʿal-īmēlāt?
Maya: Why aren't you answering the emails?
ʿam baḥaḍḍer el-ʿareḍ, w-ma fīne iʿmal esh-shagheltēn sawa.
Jad: I'm preparing the presentation, and I can't do both things together.
ṭayyeb, ana ʿam barodd ʿal-īmēlāt el-ʿēzhle awwal she.
Maya: Okay, I'm answering the urgent emails first.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect neutral placement — an overt subject normally precedes
ana ʿam biktob et-taʾrīr, w-Rana ʿam btrēzheʿ el-arʾām.
I'm writing the report, and Rana is reviewing the numbers.
Incorrect inference — context can make عم cover an extended current phase, not only this second.
has-sane ʿam byishtighel bil-maṣref, bass ʿāde byidros.
This year he's working at the bank, but normally he studies.
Incorrect — ما precedes the whole progressive.
ma ʿam bismaʿak min ṣawt el-mūsīʾa.
I can't hear you over the sound of the music.
Key Takeaways
Beirut عم + b-imperfect presents an event or temporary phase from inside. Remove عم for an ordinary habit or state, place subjects according to topic and focus, and negate the whole complex with ما عم. Interactional عم قولك and عم بمزح derive their stance from making the speech action live.
