Questions & Answers about Toplum yıldan yıla yozlaşmakta.
How does the phrase yıldan yıla create the meaning of gradual change?
This phrase uses the exact structure focused on in this lesson: Noun + Ablative (-dan) followed by the same Noun + Dative (-a). By attaching these to the word yıl (year), we literally get "from year to year." It is the standard way to express that an action is progressing steadily over a period of time.
Why does the sentence use yozlaşmakta instead of the standard present continuous yozlaşıyor?
The -makta / -mekte suffix is an alternative present continuous marker. At the B2 level, you will see it frequently in news reports, formal writing, and literature. While yozlaşıyor is grammatically correct and means the same thing, yozlaşmakta elevates the register to sound more formal and emphasizes the ongoing, structural nature of the process.
How is the verb yozlaşmak built, and what is the role of -laş?
It is built from the root adjective yoz (degenerate, corrupt) and the suffix -laş (or -leş). This suffix attaches to adjectives or nouns to mean "to become [adjective]." It is the same structure you might remember from earlier lessons in words like güzelleşmek (to become beautiful) or iyileşmek (to get better).
Can I apply this same grammar structure to other time words like "day" or "month"?
