Questions & Answers about Uzlaşma sağlamak yerine kısıtlamaları artırdılar.

This lesson teaches -e karşın (despite). Could we use uzlaşma sağlamaya karşın here instead?

It would completely change the meaning. The postposition -e karşın means "despite," so the sentence would mean "Despite reaching a compromise, they increased the restrictions." Here, yerine means "instead of," showing the compromise never happened. Notice that yerine follows a plain infinitive (sağlamak yerine), while karşın requires a dative verbal noun (sağlamaya karşın).

Why use sağlamak (to provide) with uzlaşma?

In Turkish, abstract nouns often pair with sağlamak to describe achieving or establishing that state. While English says "to reach a compromise," Turkish says uzlaşma sağlamak (literally "to provide/ensure compromise"). Using a verb like yapmak here wouldn't sound natural.

Why is the verb artırdılar rather than arttılar?

The root artmak is an intransitive verb meaning "to increase" on its own (like "prices increased"). Because the subject ("they") is acting upon an object ("the restrictions"), we need the causative form. Adding the suffix -ır makes artırmak, meaning "to make increase" or "to raise."

Is the -ı on kısıtlamaları a possessive suffix or the accusative case?
