Questions & Answers about Radar, uçakların rotalarının çakıştığını gösteriyor.
Why are there two genitive words in a row (uçakların rotalarının)?
The phrase for "the planes' routes" is a standard possessive noun phrase: uçakların rotaları. However, because this entire phrase acts as the subject of the embedded clause (they are the things doing the intersecting), it must take the genitive case marker to connect to the nominalized verb. That means adding -nın to the end, resulting in uçakların rotalarının.
Can you break down the suffixes on çakıştığını?
The root is çakış- (intersect). We add the nominalizing suffix -tık (which softens to -tığ) to mean "the fact that... intersects". Next comes the possessive suffix -ı, which agrees with the genitive subject rotalarının. Finally, we add the buffer -n- and the accusative case -ı, because the entire embedded clause is the direct object of gösteriyor (the radar shows what?).
What kind of verb is çakışmak and how is it formed?
çakışmak is a reciprocal verb, meaning an action done with or to one another. It is formed by adding the reciprocal suffix -ış to the verb çakmak (to strike, hit, or drive in). Literally it means "to strike each other," but it is most commonly used to mean "to clash," "to overlap," or "to intersect" (like routes, lines, or schedules).
