Questions & Answers about Tartışmalı faktörü tartışmak yerine onu gözden kaçırıyorsun.
This sentence doesn't use the lesson's target structure. How could we rewrite it using asıl ... olan to emphasize the controversial factor?
You could change it to Asıl tartışmalı olan faktörü tartışmak yerine onu gözden kaçırıyorsun. By using asıl (real/main) and olan (which is), you add cleft-like emphasis: 'Instead of discussing the factor that is actually controversial...'
Why is the pronoun onu used in the second half of the sentence?
Because the first object, tartışmalı faktörü, is tied to the phrase tartışmak yerine (instead of discussing). Turkish prefers to restate the object as a pronoun (onu) in the main clause so the final verb (gözden kaçırıyorsun) has a clear, direct target.
How does gözden kaçırıyorsun literally translate to 'you are overlooking'?
It literally means 'you are letting it escape from the eye.' Göz is 'eye', -den is 'from', and kaçırmak is a verb meaning 'to let escape' or 'to miss'. Together, they form the standard idiom for missing or overlooking a detail.
How is the adjective tartışmalı formed?
It comes from the verb tartışmak (to discuss). This becomes the noun tartışma (discussion), and adding the suffix -lı (having / characterized by) turns it into the adjective tartışmalı, literally meaning 'having discussion' or 'controversial'.
