"Geçti" normally means "passed". Why does it translate to "went" here?
In Turkish, to say an event or experience "went well" or "went badly", you use the verb geçmek (to pass). So iyi geçti literally means "it passed well", which is how Turkish speakers say "it went well".
How is the past tense formed in geçti?
The verb root is geç (pass). The past tense suffix is usually -di, but because geç ends in a voiceless consonant (ç), the d changes to a t to match it. This makes the suffix -ti.

You add the negative suffix -me right after the verb root. So geç + me + di becomes Sınav iyi geçmedi (The exam didn't go well). Notice that the d in -di doesn't change to a t here because it comes directly after the vowel e, not the hard consonant ç.
