Questions & Answers about Bu limon hiç güzel değil.
Since this lesson is about yok (there is not), why does this sentence use değil?
This is a very important difference in Turkish! Use yok when you want to say something doesn't exist or you don't have it (like 'There is no lemon'). Use değil when you want to say what a specific thing is not (like 'This lemon is not nice'). Since we are describing the lemon's quality rather than its existence, we must use değil.
Does hiç always mean 'at all'?
hiç usually means 'none', 'never', or 'ever'. When you put it in a negative sentence (like one ending with değil or yok), it acts as an intensifier meaning 'not at all.' So, hiç güzel değil means 'not nice at all.'
Doesn't güzel mean 'beautiful'? Why is it translated as 'nice' here?
Yes, güzel literally means 'beautiful,' but in Turkish, it is used very broadly. When talking about food, weather, or experiences, it usually just means 'nice,' 'good,' or 'tasty.' Saying a lemon is 'not beautiful' sounds strange in English, but güzel değil is the perfectly natural way to say it doesn't taste good in Turkish.
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, there is no separate word for 'is' in the present tense for 'he/she/it' subjects. You simply place the negative word değil at the end. Bu limon güzel means 'This lemon is nice,' and Bu limon güzel değil means 'This lemon is not nice.'
