Questions & Answers about Yaramaz kardeşim sürekli salıncaktan düşerdi.
How is the verb düşerdi built to mean "used to fall"?
It combines the verb root düş- (to fall) with the aorist suffix -er and the past tense suffix -di. The aorist indicates a general fact or habit, and the past tense moves it to the past. Together, the aorist past -erdi expresses "used to" or "would" do something regularly.
Could I just use the simple past tense düştü here?
No, because the sentence contains sürekli (constantly), which describes a repeated habit. If you used düştü (fell), it would mean the sibling fell only once on a specific occasion, which contradicts the idea of constantly doing it.
What is the difference between saying düşerdi and düşüyordu in this context?
Both can translate to past habits. However, düşüyordu (past continuous) often emphasizes an ongoing process in the past ("was falling"), while düşerdi (aorist past) sounds more like a general characteristic or a typical repeated event ("would fall"). For talking about past personal habits, düşerdi is usually the more natural choice.
Why does the suffix on salıncaktan start with a "t" instead of a "d"?
