Questions & Answers about Kalkış geciktiği için herkes sinirli.
Why is it geciktiği için instead of just gecikti için?
In Turkish, to say "because [an action happened]", you can't just put a regular conjugated verb in front of için. Instead, you have to turn the verb into a noun using the -DIk suffix. Here, gecikmek (to be delayed) becomes geciktik + -i (its) to make geciktiği. Literally, it means "for its being delayed."
Why does geciktiği have a -ğ- instead of a -k-?
This is a standard case of consonant mutation. The base verbal noun is geciktik (using the -DIk suffix). When we add the third-person possessive suffix -i (a vowel) to show what was delayed, the hard k softens to a ğ.
I know kalkmak means "to get up" or "to take off." How does it become "departure" here?
The word kalkış is formed by adding the -Iş suffix to kalkmak. This suffix turns a verb into a noun that represents the action itself or the manner of doing it. When talking about planes, trains, or buses, kalkış specifically means "departure."
I thought sinirli meant "nervous." Can it also mean "angry"?
