Questions & Answers about Başlangıçta her şey zor görünüyor, oysa gerçeklik çok farklı.
How does oysa work here, and could I use halbuki instead?
Oysa translates to "whereas" or "however" and is used to contrast two clauses. In this sentence, it contrasts the expectation ("everything seems difficult") with the truth ("reality is very different"). You could perfectly replace it with halbuki here, as they both mean "whereas" and show a direct contradiction between the statements.
How is the word başlangıçta formed?
It comes from the verb başlamak (to begin). The suffix -ngıç turns the verb stem into the noun başlangıç (the beginning). Finally, the locative case suffix -ta (at/in) is added, making it "at the beginning".
Why is it görünüyor and not görüyor?
Görüyor means "is seeing" (from görmek, to see). By adding the suffix -ün, we get görünmek, which means "to be seen" or "to appear/seem". So, zor görünüyor means "seems difficult".
What does the -lik suffix do in gerçeklik?
The word gerçek means "real" or "truth". The -lik suffix is used to form abstract nouns from adjectives or other nouns, similar to "-ity" or "-ness" in English. So gerçeklik means "reality".
