Questions & Answers about Benim uyarıma rağmen okula gidiyor.
How does rağmen work here, and why is there an -a on uyarıma?
The postposition rağmen (despite) requires the word right before it to take the dative case (the -(y)a or -(y)e ending). So, we add the dative ending -a to uyarım (my warning) to make it uyarıma rağmen (despite my warning).
Why is it benim uyarıma instead of just benim uyarıya?
In Turkish, when you use a possessive pronoun like benim (my), the noun it belongs to must also take a matching possessive ending. Here, uyarı (warning) takes the 'my' ending -m, becoming uyarım. Only after establishing possession do we add the dative -a to the end.
Could I drop benim and just say uyarıma rağmen?
Yes! Because the ending -m on uyarıma already clearly shows that it is your warning, dropping benim is perfectly natural and very common. Keeping benim in the sentence just adds a bit of extra emphasis, meaning 'despite MY warning'.
Why does gidiyor have a d instead of a t?
The root of the verb is git- (to go). When we add a vowel-starting suffix like the present continuous -iyor, the hard t changes to a soft d. This is a standard consonant mutation that happens with certain verbs to make them flow better when spoken.
