Questions & Answers about Bu kitabı bana hediye etti.
Why is it kitabı instead of kitap or kitapı?
The dictionary word for book is kitap. We add the accusative case ending -ı because "this book" is a specific direct object. When a word ends in p and gets a vowel suffix, the p changes to a b to make it easier to say. This is why it becomes kitabı.
I know "to me" uses the dative case of ben, but why is it bana instead of "bene"?
The pronouns ben (I) and sen (you) are special exceptions to the normal vowel harmony rules. When you add the dative (direction) ending to them, their root vowels change, giving us bana (to me) and sana (to you).
Why is the verb etti used here if it usually means "did" or "made"?
In Turkish, many verbs are created by pairing a noun or adjective with the helper verb etmek (to do/make). Here, the noun hediye (gift) is combined with etmek to make hediye etmek (to give as a gift). Etti is simply the past tense form of this helper verb.
Is it normal to put bana (to me) right before the verb?
