Questions & Answers about Öğretmenden kalem rica ettim.
Why is the ending -den attached to öğretmen?
The suffix -den means from. You add it directly to the end of the noun, so öğretmen (teacher) becomes öğretmenden (from the teacher). We use -den instead of -dan because the last vowel in öğretmen is an e, which requires a front vowel ending to follow the rules of vowel harmony.
Why is there no word for bir (a/an) before kalem?
In Turkish, when you refer to a general or non-specific object, you often drop the word bir. Saying kalem rica ettim sounds very natural for asking for a pen in a general sense. If you wanted to emphasize one single pen, you could say bir kalem.
How does the verb rica ettim work?
This is a compound verb made of two words. Rica means request, and etmek is a helper verb that means to do or to make. Turkish frequently uses etmek alongside nouns to turn them into action verbs.
