Questions & Answers about O dönem zor ama ilginçmiş.
Why is there a -miş at the end of ilginçmiş?
-miş is the reported past tense suffix. By using it instead of the regular past tense -di, the speaker is showing that they didn't live through that era themselves. They know it was difficult but interesting because they heard about it, read about it, or inferred it. It translates well to 'apparently was' or 'I heard it was'.
English says 'was difficult but interesting', but zor (difficult) doesn't have a past tense suffix here. Why?
When you list multiple adjectives connected by words like ama (but) or ve (and), Turkish only requires the tense suffix on the very last word in the chain. The -miş at the end of ilginçmiş naturally applies to zor as well, so you don't need to say zormuş ama ilginçmiş.
How do we know to use -miş instead of -mış or -muş here?
This is due to 4-way vowel harmony. You look at the last vowel in the word ilginç, which is 'i'. Words whose last vowel is 'e' or 'i' take an 'i' in the suffix, making it -miş.
Could I say o zaman instead of o dönem?
