Questions & Answers about Nişan töreni başlamış mı?
Why use başlamış mı here instead of başladı mı?
The regular past tense başladı mı just asks the direct fact: "Did it start?". By using the reported past tense -mış, başlamış mı means you are asking about something you haven't seen with your own eyes. It translates better to "Have you heard if it started?" or "Is it true that it started?".
Why is there an -i at the end of töreni?
This is a noun compound. When combining two nouns to form a specific concept, like nişan (engagement) and tören (ceremony), Turkish adds a possessive suffix to the second noun. Therefore, tören gets the -i suffix to become nişan töreni (engagement ceremony).
Why doesn't the verb başlamış have a personal suffix at the end?
The subject of the sentence is nişan töreni (the engagement ceremony), which is a "third-person singular" subject, equivalent to "it". In Turkish, the "he/she/it" form of the verb doesn't take an extra personal suffix. The verb root plus the tense suffix (başla + mış) is all you need.
Why is the question particle mı instead of mi?
