Questions & Answers about Biz bir katile güvenmeyiz.
Why does güvenmeyiz end in -yiz instead of having an -r- like the positive form?
This is the special rule for the negative aorist (simple present) tense. For the 'we' form, the negative ending is -meyiz or -mayız. The usual time marker -r- drops out completely. So güvenmek becomes güvenmeyiz (we do not trust).
Why is there an -e at the end of katile?
The verb güvenmek (to trust) always requires the dative case. In Turkish, you do not just 'trust someone', you 'trust to someone'. Because the last vowel in katil (murderer) is an 'i', it takes the -e ending to match vowel harmony, becoming katile.
Can I leave out the word Biz at the start of the sentence?
Yes, you can just say Bir katile güvenmeyiz. The -yiz ending on the verb already shows that the subject is 'we'. Including Biz just adds extra emphasis, like saying 'We do not trust a murderer (even if others might).'
What happens if we remove the word bir from the sentence?
If you say Biz katile güvenmeyiz, it changes the meaning to 'We do not trust the murderer'. Using bir makes it indefinite ('a murderer'), showing that you do not trust any person who is a murderer in general.
