Questions & Answers about Kadın eti bıçakla kesiyor.
How do we get bıçakla from bıçak?
The suffix -la is the attached version of the word ile, meaning "with" or "by means of". Because the last vowel in bıçak is "a", A-type vowel harmony dictates we use -la instead of -le. So, bıçakla means "with a knife".
Why does the sentence use eti instead of just et?
Et means "meat". Because the woman is cutting a specific piece of meat, it is the definite direct object of the sentence. We show this by adding the accusative case suffix -i. This makes it mean "the meat" rather than just "meat in general".
Why doesn't the "t" in et soften to a "d" when we add the vowel -i?
You might remember that words ending in "p, ç, t, k" often change to softer consonants ("b, c, d, ğ") when a vowel is added. However, most single-syllable words in Turkish are exceptions to this rule. So et simply becomes eti, keeping its hard "t".
How is the verb kesiyor built?
It comes from the dictionary verb kesmek (to cut). We remove the -mek ending to find the root, kes. Because the root ends in a consonant and its vowel is "e", we add the present continuous suffix -iyor to get kesiyor, meaning "is cutting".
