Questions & Answers about Lütfen alarmı aç.
Why is there an -ı at the end of alarmı?
The -ı is the specific direct object ending (the accusative case). Because you are asking to turn on a specific alarm (the alarm), you add -ı to alarm.
Does aç really mean turn on? I thought it meant open.
Yes! In Turkish, the verb açmak literally means to open, but it is also used for turning on electronic devices, appliances, and lights. So aç is used for both opening a door and turning on an alarm.
Why isn't there a formal or plural ending on aç?
aç is the singular, informal command form of the verb. You use this bare root form when speaking to one person you know well. If you were speaking formally or to multiple people, you would say açın.
Where does lütfen usually go in a Turkish sentence?
Lütfen (please) is very flexible. It often goes at the beginning of the sentence, like here, but you can also put it at the very end (Alarmı aç lütfen) without changing the meaning.
